Coffee with Cream and Butter, Please

The Paleo Diet is certainly growing in popularity.  For those unfamiliar with this diet, it relies on foods and drinks that would have been consumed by our caveman ancestors.  That means meats, nuts, green and root vegetables only, with no gluten or grains. Carrots_with_stems

For true devotees of the diet, though, coffee is a challenge as many drinkers want it sweetened.  Enter Bulletproof Coffee, invented by a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur who runs The Bulletproof Executive web site.  His recipe is this:  Blend prepared coffee in a kitchen blender with 1-2 Tablespoons of unsalted, preferably grass-fed, butter.  Blending this way gives the coffee a foamy head and a buttery (obviously) texture that cannot be achieved with a spoon.  Devotees swear that the coffee is so filling, you won’t need to eat anything else for hours.Western-pack-butter

FDA Looks Into Caffeine-Added Products

With the recent increase of “energy” products on the market, the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. is launching an investigation into the safety of caffeine-added foods.  In particular, the FDA will focus on the effects of caffeine-enhanced products with children and teens.  Some new caffeine-enhanced products are attractive and readily available to adolescents, such as jelly beans, marshmallows, sunflower seeds and gum.  (The gum, btw, has as much caffeine as half a cup of coffee in just one piece!)  The last time the FDA explicitly approved added caffeine was in the 1950s for colas.  Although there is no recommended limit of caffeine for children, many medical groups discourage parents from giving children and adolescents any sort of caffeine or other stimulants.

Coffee or Tea? That will be $2 please.

Empty Airplane SeatsWe all know that airline freebies are quickly becoming a fond memory.  An airlines recently announced that passengers will start paying for carry-on luggage, tea, soda, juice, and coffee, starting this summer. All those drinks will cost $1.99 to those flying on Economy or Basic fares.

But is it the cost that is the objection?  Or is it the coffee that is objectionable?  As we have said here before, consumers are willing to pay for a good cup of coffee.

Unfortunately, airlines probably aren’t the ones to serve it.

We always say:  Enjoy Better Coffee!

Have you ever had a quality cup of coffee on an airplane?  Please leave a comment and tell us about it below.

Taste Drives Coffee Purchases

Man drinking coffee_dreamstimefree_237918A recent Harris Poll of
about 2500 U.S. adults surveyed in February found that taste is the top factor
in determining where coffee and tea buyers purchase beverages. The survey found
that more than 70% of 18-35 year-olds purchase coffee or tea drinks. Three in five
buyers said the shop they most frequently visit is their favorite, while two in
five visit the most convenient place to get coffee or tea. Almost eighty
percent rate taste as a very important factor in deciding where to buy a
beverage, more than 20 percentage points higher than any other factor,
including price. Our own personal survey says nothing is better than European
coffee made at home!
