German Coffee is Wunderbar!
Consider the earliest days of coffee’s popularity, when European coffee houses were opening in the 17th century. Most coffee houses did not even allow women to sit inside – it was a man’s world. This was particularly true in England, where the rules were quite strict. But in Germany, women frequented the coffee houses, to both drink coffee and connect socially with other women. Talk about being ahead of their time! Occasionally, men protested the women being at the café and the associated chatting (“gossiping”), but the women prevailed and won the right to drink and converse. The Kaffeeklatsch – literally meaning coffee + gossip – became a common term by the 19th century.
