Lavazza, Earth Day and The Earth Defenders at

Lavazza has long been a company that cares about sustainability in the coffee-growing areas of the world. This year, Lavazza celebrates Earth Day (April 22nd) with the release of 2 different documentaries to be shown on Italian television. Both documentaries are connected to the Lavazza annual calendars, which are photographed by famous and well-known artists.

“The Earth Defenders” was the theme of the 2015 Lavazza calendar, highlighting people who work the land in Africa. A documentary with the same name will highlight the photographer and look behind the development of the calendar. “We Are What We Live” is the 2017 Lavazza calendar theme, and the name of the second documentary to be shown, again focusing on the photographer behind the calendar and the work involved creating this annual work of art.
This has been a big year for Lavazza. In addition to these documentaries, the company has opened a new headquarters in Turin, known as the “Cloud” because of its innovative design and being LEED-certified, which means the building meets environmental performance standards. And, just this February, Lavazza announced its new gourmet, coffee-focused restaurant concept, Condividere (“sharing”). The restaurant is slated to open in late 2017 in Turin also.

Italian Specialty Roasters at

Italians have loved coffee since it first arrived at the port of Trieste in the 16th century. Italians drink coffee first thing in the morning, after lunch, at work and then after dinner. Coffee is an art in Italy, especially and most notably, with espresso. In Italy, the coffee shop, known as the coffee ‘bar’, is extremely popular too! Making perfect espresso is a key skill in the bars.

The word espresso is used to describe both a roast of coffee (Espresso Roast) and a method of brewing. Espresso is brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through a compressed pack of finely ground coffee. Espresso Roast refers to coffee roasted so that it is somewhat darker than traditional American roasts. The espresso roast highlights the bitter-sweetness of the bean while keeping the acidity (the tartness) down.

We have a huge selection of coffee by historic Italian brands, all specialty roasters. This week, you can try any of these specific brands Bristot, Caffe Vergnano, Hausbrandt, Illy, Miscela D’Oro, Pellini and Sant Eustachio  and get 10% off your order with no minimum required at*

Our Best Spring Cleaning Tips + Our Weekly Deal

Has spring sprung for you yet? For many, spring means that annual task: Spring Cleaning. Like Erma Bombeck, who preferred to “sweep the room with a glance” rather than a broom or vacuum, you want it to be easy to tackle.

Here are some of our favorite tips to make the process a little easier:

1. Open the windows to let some fresh air in.

2. Keep your supplies in a convenient carrier that you can move easily from room to room.

3. Plan for easy meals for the days you will be busy with cleaning.

4. Use common household standards for cleaning rather than harsh chemicals. Baking soda scrubs without scratching, vinegar can clean most items, even used coffee grounds can be used as a mild scrub and deodorizer (see below).

5. Have upholstery and carpeting professionally cleaned rather than attempting to clean them yourself.

6. Use empty laundry baskets to pile in anything that you need others to sort through themselves. This is a good time to add a basket for items to be donated.

7. Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes and focus on cleaning during that time. When the timer goes off, take a break, then set the timer again, and focus on cleaning for the time. Breaking the work up into small chunks makes it less intimidating.

8. Check your pantry and refrigerator for items shoved to the back months ago. Check expiration dates. Can’t see the date? Perhaps it is time to follow the old rule: “When in doubt, throw it out.”

9. Clean the door handles, switch plates and knobs around the house. When was the last time you did that?

10. This is the most important one: Clean your coffeemaker. Scrub components of the machine then run a vinegar solution through followed by a couple clean water runs.  Your coffee will taste better!

Spring is also – that’s right, you guessed it – a good time to stock up on some new coffees for your pantry (after all, you’ll have plenty of room once you clean it out!). Let us help by offering you 10% off your order of $30 or more at*
