Coffee In The News, Expanded Edition, From EnjoyBetterCoffee.com

Have you heard the latest news about coffee?
We’ve got the scoop, so read on!

First in line today are beans that are out of this world, literally. These beans will be launched in a rocket, and roasted in space. Two men from Dubai are proposing a spacecraft that would hold a capsule with 300kg of raw coffee beans and use the heat of re-entry to roast the beans. The 20-minute re-entry would create the heat in the pressurized capsule where the beans can float freely inside. The guys behind the idea think the lack of gravity will allow the beans to be roasted on all sides evenly. Once safely back on Earth, the beans would be used to make coffee that will initially be sold in Dubai.

Beans-In-Space
The plans do not share how much a cup of this space blend would cost the consumer. Look for more sometimes next year, when the proposed launch could happen.

antimicrobial-crIn other news, microbiology researchers in the UK have found that antimicrobial reusable coffee cups are safer to use than ordinary plastic reusable cups. As you may know, in some European countries, cafes offer reusable cups to patrons, with discounts and other incentives to encourage the use of returnable cups. Using a variety of cleaning methods researchers measured and compared bacterial growth from the surfaces of both regular and treated cups. Not only were the treated cups shown to be more than 99% effective at keeping growth down, the study also found that the best way to inhibit bacterial growth on the cup’s surface was to properly wash the cups in hot water and detergent. And, yes, it took a just-released study to tell us that last bit.

How about a Charcoal Latte? This coffee drink contains activated charcoal, which some claim helps cleanse the body of toxins. (It’s sometimes used in the ER for Charcoal-lattepeople who have swallowed poisons.) Apparently, the appeal is the wide range of flavors and aromas that are added in, such as lavender, honey, flowers, and the dark color of the brew. Food and medical experts note that the frequent use of activated charcoal is not recommended. The charcoal can bind to both toxins and vital nutrients, ridding your body of both.

Coffee In The News

Coffee + Alcohol + Surprise = Longer Life

coffee-and-alcoholA study from the University of California, Irvine, found that participants who drank two cups of coffee per day and those who drank two glasses of wine or beer per day had a decrease in their chances of mortality. More surprising for researchers was the finding that overweight people in their 70’s lived longer than normal- or under-weight people of the same age did. The study began in 2013 monitoring 1600 people in their 90’s through biannual checkups used to identify factors and life choices made by people living past 90 years.

Drink Coffee, Be Generous

A study out this month has found that people are more likely to give something to someone else if they are holding something warm. Holding a cold beverage had the opposite effect. In one part of the study, subjects were asked to rate personality traits of individuals about whom they were given only a packet of information. Participants answered questions that were broken down into two categories: Warm vs cold, i.e., generous/ungenerous; happy/unhappy; sociable/anti-social, etc. Those drinking hot drinks were more generous in their responses. The second study found participants, when presented with the opportunity to give a gift certificate to themselves or to friends, were more likely to share when they had a hot drink in their hands rather than a cold one.

misceladoro-nl-iconWhen the Urbano family started roasting small batches of coffee in 1946, the guiding principle of the company was to choose the highest quality raw beans. The company remains committed to sourcing the best raw coffee beans, carefully blending the beans while still green, then roasting them to produce a full-bodied espresso with a rich, thick crema. This roasting technique creates a mild coffee with a fragrant aroma. In addition to espresso, Sant Eustachio offers Moka, and Filtro coffee blends for a flavorful cup. How Do I Love Douwe Egberts? Let Me Count the Ways

Douwe Egberts: For Coffee Lovers

The annual celebration of love, Valentine’s Day, is later this week and will be celebrated around the world. In the Netherlands, initially the day was celebrated as a way to honor friendship by thanking someone special with flowers. Today, the day is celebrated with a card and flowers (not tulips) and perhaps even some chocolate – and, as you may already know, the Dutch do both flowers and chocolates exceptionally well!

DE-V-Day-Banner-NL
Here are a few Valentine’s Day surprises, then:

  • The day’s focus on love was first celebrated in Great Britain in the 1600’s, with the exchange of notes. Cards became popular during Victoria’s reign. (The early history of a day to honor St. Valentine is not at all romantic.)cadbury-original-valentine-heart
  •  A few countries celebrate romantic love on another day of the year. For instance, in Wales, the patron saint of lovers is celebrated on January 25th. Brazil hold Lovers Day in June.
  • In Slovenia, the celebration is in March, so February 14 is the day to work in the fields to honor St. Valentine, the patron saint of spring.
  • Giving the gift of chocolate started as a marketing plan of British manufacturer Richard Cadbury in the 1800’s.

But it should be no surprise that our favorite Dutch treat is Douwe Egberts coffee, of course. At EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we have a wide range of Douwe Egberts coffees and products. This week, we’ll take 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts and Senseo products with no minimum purchase required.*

The Netherlands In The News

Man Sues To Improve Dating Chances

Crazy-Man-Sues-To-Be-YoungerA Dutch man has requested to legally changes his age from 69 to 49. As a local TV personality, he has publicly spoken many times about the impact of age on his dating prospects. After being denied the request, he sued the government, comparing the situation as similar to legally changing his name. He is confident that if he were able to say he was 49 on dating apps, he would get younger women wanting to meet him. The court has denied his request.

Beach Fire Turns Dangerous

Firenado
A New Year’s Eve bonfire on the beach in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, literally spiraled out of control, creating ‘firenados’ that moved across the sand, and caused multiple fires. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Dutch Government Invests In Cyclists

bikes-rowsIn the Netherlands, there are six million more bikes than residents. The government recently announced it would invest money in the cycling infrastructure (think cyclist freeways, bike parking and storage spaces), with the goal to get 200,000 more people commuting by bike over the next three years. With more than 50% of people in the Netherlands living less than 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from work, the distance can “easily” be covered by bike, per the project leader.
