As we often say, Germany has been important in the history of coffee around the world. This week, we share two big events in German coffee, one just this year, and one that commemorates an event more than 200 years ago.
First, the 2019 German Barista and Latte Art Championship took place in Nuremberg this past January. The most skilled baristas from across the country competed for the title, and to be able to move on to the World Coffee Championships. Barista participants had only fifteen minutes to prepare a total of twelve drinks for the panel of four judges. One drink had to be an espresso drink, one a milk drink, and one a signature drink. The harder part of the competition was that each contestant had to explain their coffee choices and their preparation to the judges watching. The Latte Art Championship, a separate event, had competitors creating intricate designs that were then judged on visual attributes, creativity, identical patters in pairs, contrast in patterns and overall performance. The winners, from coffee houses in Berlin and Hamburg respectively, will represent Germany in the world competitions. The World Barista Championship is held in April in Boston, MA while the World Latte Art Championship will be held in June in Berlin.
The second set of honors is from Google, for German chemist Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, with an animated doodle (a special, temporary modification of the logo on its homepage). Runge discovered the chemical makeup of caffeine, after studying a bag of coffee beans given to him as a gift. The doodle ran last month on the anniversary of his birthday 225 years ago. The search engine used the doodle to show the chemistry and use of coffee in the logo, along with an animated image of someone sipping coffee and feeling the zing.

PS – We have Tchibo Black and White Instant Coffee already on sale and eligible for the discount above. Instant coffee is in most homes, and regularly drunk in Europe, in part because the instant coffee for the European market is richer and fuller. This blend of select beans is good black or with cream. The freeze-dried instant coffee is in 7oz glass jars, so you can keep it dry and cool, and then reuse the jar.
The Brands Of Tchibo
Tchibo is a top seller, with several premium products. Try Tchibo Exclusive, great for stovetop Moka makers and espresso, or Gold Selection, an aromatic, unique, medium blend. Both are available in ground and instant. We have several other ground coffees from the Tchibo range: Feine Milde (fine and mild), Beste Bohne (100% Arabica), and Family (full and strong). Looking for a whole bean? Try Tchibo’s Sicilian Espresso roast.
Eduscho opened its first store in Bremen in the 1950’s, soon followed by stores in major German cities. Introduced in 1959, Gala coffee was sold in bakeries which further popularized the brand in German culture. In 1980, Gala coffee was renamed to Gala Number 1 (Nr. 1) to reflect its status in the market and its flavor and quality. Eduscho Mild, made from beans grown in tropical climates, is mild, smooth and balanced, with a gentle aroma. Both are available in ground, and both are Eduscho’s top sellers.
Davidoff Café is a luxury brand that creates smooth and flavorful coffee. One of our newest items from Davidoff Café is Crema Intense instant coffee, a special coffee. Another special instant is the Limited Edition Elements and we have 3 other Davidoff instants too. Davidoff makes delicious ground coffee in Espresso 57, Fine Aroma and Rich Aroma. We also have 2 whole beans, Espresso 57 and Crème. Finally, for the Nespresso drinkers, we have 3 different roasts, plus a capsule variety package. All Davidoff products are available for the discount above.
Coffee In The News
When Is Coffee Not Coffee? When It’s Atomo Coffee!
A new startup company, Atomo Coffee, wants to make your morning coffee without any coffee at all. The company is working on a way to “replicate a standard cup coffee – down to the taste, aroma and even mouthfeel – all with natural ingredients, none of which are coffee beans.” Created by a microbiologist, the process is trying to break down coffee to a molecular level, then rebuilt it, except without using coffee. The ground coffee product is not bitter, but quite smooth, not too dark, not too light, the company claims. This supports their findings that in a blind taste test with university students, Atomo was the clear favorite for 70% of participants.
As always, enjoy better coffee and thanks from the EnjoyBetterCoffee Team!
