Cozy Up With Cocoa (and More) From

2015_Cocoa and treat with logo

You’re sitting at a small Parisian café. It’s breakfast time on your first day in Paris. You are thinking coffee, eggs and bacon are the norm, but instead, you are served a croissant and hot chocolate, of course!  (Yes, dunk the pastry, s’ils vous plait!)

As you may know, it isn’t unusual to be served hot chocolate as a breakfast drink in many European countries. It wasn’t always this way, though.

When chocolate first appeared in Europe in the 18th century, it was a status symbol and enjoyed by the nobility, originally in Spain. Chocolate was mostly drunk, since candy and solid chunks of chocolate weren’t produced until more than a century later. You would buy cocoa at a coffee cafe or Chocolate House, though it was seen by some as dangerous or even addictive.

In France, chocolate was such a delight, it was served in the royal palace of Versailles. A doctor of the time declared it was the “food of the gods, rather than ambrosia or nectar.” Favored courtiers were invited to the chocolat du Regent – a breakfast of chocolate with the Regent (who was the under-age king’s uncle, since the heir to the throne Louis XV was only 5 years old when his father died; the Regent handled affairs until the child was old enough).

The preparations of chocolate for drinking were also different around the world. The Spanish put vanilla and sugar in water with cocoa; the English get the credit for adding milk to the recipe; the French used cocoa, vanilla, sugar and cinnamon.

At, we have a great selection of cocoa powder, hot chocolate mix, cookies and cake for dunking and even  sugar cubes (brown and white) for sweetening your drink.

Try A L’Ancienne Instant Chocolate for a true French cocoa experience. This premium cocoa contains only 3 simple ingredients: cocoa, vanilla and brown sugar. We have a variety of sizes of A L’Ancienne instant chocolate, from 10 individual pouches to 14 packets in a special gift cube to the kilo-sized can.  We have a variety of available cocoas and sweets online, so go for it!

In the meantime, cozy up with some hot cocoa and a biscuit for a truly French rendezvous with chocolate. Order anything from and get $5 off your order of $40 or more.*
