Amsterdam: Iconic Architecture And Douwe Egberts

The Netherlands is the home of Douwe Egberts, the most popular coffee in the country. The country itself is iconic – think Dutch canal skating, wheels of cheese, wooden clogs, to name a few – so this week we’re highlighting special sights to see on a visit.

When thinking of Amsterdam, do images of large houses along a canal come to mind? While that is the iconic image, there are also homes not canal-side that reflect the history and architecture of this great city.

rembrandt-house-1Let’s start with the Rembrandt House. The actual building dates from 1606, a prominent house of the time; today the interior is restored and decorated just as it was when Rembrandt himself lived there for 20 years from 1640. The iconic artist painted the majority of his masterpieces while living there, and had a collection of rare objects (suits of Japanese armor and busts of Roman emperors, for instance) along with paintings, drawings and sketches from the Old Masters. His collections and his studio, where he taught students to paint like a master, have been recreated, so the home is now a museum.

One of those houses on a canal is the Anne Frank House. The house opened to the public in 1960 with the mission to encourage freedom, equal rights and democracy. Designated a world heritage site, one million people visit annually.

3d-print-houseOne more house that is must-see: The 3D Print Canal House, made entirely of plastic and foam, is a unique look at 3D printing (one printer was 6 meters’ tall, and is on display), and the process it takes to put it all together. While the construction is still on-going, each piece used is fabricated individually and tacked on to the house. You can also learn about the printing process on your visit.

Like a darker roast? Try Douwe Egberts Mocca Aroma coffee, rich and full, with spice and cocoa notes. We have Mocca Aroma in ground and whole beans. Just a reminder that this Mocca coffee is not the kind of coffee/chocolate drink you order at a café, but instead refers to the type of bean.

We have Douwe Egberts Black, a dark, rich coffee in ground. As one of the brand’s most popular coffees, it’s a top-seller.

If you prefer a lighter coffee, try Douwe Egberts Select Aroma in ground. The Arabica blend is silky, smooth, with very subtle notes of fruit, and a mild flavor.

Not sure? Try Aroma Rood, the flagship product, a delicious medium roast, medium strength coffee. We have Aroma Rood in whole beans, ground and instant.

These coffees are made for the European market, so it’s just like a cup served at a canal-side café in Amsterdam! The discount is only available through Tuesday, so order today!

Coffee vs Tea Study Looks At Drinker’s Personality

tea-vs-coffeeA new study of 2000 Americans gathered data to examine how a person’s choice of drink relates to her personality. For instance, you’d think that those of us who drink coffee in the morning would be the loud, extroverted group, but no. Turns out the tea drinkers are outgoing, and night owls, while the coffee drinkers are the creative, introverted types. A few other interesting findings:

• More than 75 percent drink their first cup of coffee or tea before 8AM.
• Tea lovers were more likely to enjoy “The Walking Dead” and “Friends” while coffee lovers prefer “The Office” and “Seinfeld.”
• Coffee drinkers prefer punk, rock, blues and jazz; tea drinkers choose classical, country, pop or hip-hop.
• Coffee types average 3.4 cups per day; tea types sip 2.7 cups.

The study was conducted on behalf of a company that makes disposable paper cups.

Heritage Days In The Netherlands Celebrate Culture and History

Douwe Egberts has been based in the Netherlands for more than 265 years.

While there are always cultural and social happenings in The Netherlands, September brings the celebration of Heritage Days (Open Monumentendag, as the Dutch say). Since 1987, this annual event has always been held over the second weekend of September, where some 5000 historical buildings and sites open their doors to the public, usually free of charge. The event is part of the larger European Heritage Days, which aims to make European culture and heritage more accessible.

In the Netherlands, more than 80 percent of Dutch citizens participate. This year, organizers expect a million people to take part in the 1000+ events across the country. Local groups in each city and village host related exhibitions, music and tours. Each location offers unique aspects of historical culture. For instance, The Hague reflects the political center of the country; Maastricht shows off its medieval churches; Amsterdam has canal houses; Leiden’s theatres shine, and Gouda has a magnificent city hall. So many sites, so little time.

You can celebrate Dutch Heritage too with Douwe Egberts coffee. When you order Douwe Egberts products at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, you will get 15% off, no minimum required.*

Treat The Beans With Care

bean-closeup
The biggest threats to the taste and freshness of coffee beans are air, moisture and time. In a perfect world, coffee would be ground, brewed and drunk immediately. When you buy fresh beans, you should try to use them within 2 weeks. Store them in the bag in which they come, grind them as you need them. Seal the bag with tape or a strong clip after forcing out as much air as possible. You can also store them in an air-tight canister, but make sure the container does not allow light to get in. We do not recommend storing beans (or ground coffee, for that matter) in the freezer or refrigerator. When the coffee is moved in and out of the cold, condensation forms on the coffee. That moisture will then refreeze and thaw each and every time you move it from the cold to the ambient room temperature. This will quickly deplete the flavorful oils of the coffee, making your coffee taste flat. Life’s too short for bad coffee.

Budweiser Now Available in Netherlands

budThe American “King of Beers” is taking the show on the road to become available in pubs and restaurants in the country. Very soon, the beer will also be available in grocery stores. Economists predict an uphill battle for the beer brand, as it is not a well-known brand. In addition, the current market trend in the country is towards specialty, artisanal and local beers.

Advice: Repair Your Coffee Machine, Don’t Replace It

Launching last week, an ad campaign is running in the Netherlands to encourage people to repair broken household good and torn clothing. The promotional campaign, running on television, the internet and radio, is the work of an industry foundation that produces ads that encourage societal improvements. The foundation estimates that people throw away 40 pounds of electric equipment every year. Their website will have tips about repairing common items and offer advice on the mending.
