Amsterdam: Iconic Architecture And Douwe Egberts

The Netherlands is the home of Douwe Egberts, the most popular coffee in the country. The country itself is iconic – think Dutch canal skating, wheels of cheese, wooden clogs, to name a few – so this week we’re highlighting special sights to see on a visit.
Canal-Row-Sunset
When thinking of Amsterdam, do images of large houses along a canal come to mind? While that is the iconic image, there are also homes not canal-side that reflect the history and architecture of this great city.

rembrandt-house-1Let’s start with the Rembrandt House. The actual building dates from 1606, a prominent house of the time; today the interior is restored and decorated just as it was when Rembrandt himself lived there for 20 years from 1640. The iconic artist painted the majority of his masterpieces while living there, and had a collection of rare objects (suits of Japanese armor and busts of Roman emperors, for instance) along with paintings, drawings and sketches from the Old Masters. His collections and his studio, where he taught students to paint like a master, have been recreated, so the home is now a museum.

One of those houses on a canal is the Anne Frank House. The house opened to the public in 1960 with the mission to encourage freedom, equal rights and democracy. Designated a world heritage site, one million people visit annually.

3d-print-houseOne more house that is must-see: The 3D Print Canal House, made entirely of plastic and foam, is a unique look at 3D printing (one printer was 6 meters’ tall, and is on display), and the process it takes to put it all together. While the construction is still on-going, each piece used is fabricated individually and tacked on to the house. You can also learn about the printing process on your visit.

Even if you can’t be in Amsterdam, you can still enjoy great Dutch coffee with Douwe Egberts from EnjoyBetterCoffee.com. Get 15% off all Douwe Egberts coffee with no minimum order!

Please Use Coupon Code: IHEARTDE

*Discount valid from 10/13/19 through 11:59PM ET on 10/15/19 at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with no minimum purchase required for Douwe Egberts products. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products. Questions? Call 800.582.6617 Mon-Fri 9AM-5PM ET.

Have You Tried These Douwe Egberts Coffees Yet?

DE-Sale-Advert-December-2018-NL
Like a darker roast? Try Douwe Egberts Mocca Aroma coffee, rich and full, with spice and cocoa notes. We have Mocca Aroma in ground and whole beans. Just a reminder that this Mocca coffee is not the kind of coffee/chocolate drink you order at a café, but instead refers to the type of bean.

We have Douwe Egberts Black, a dark, rich coffee in ground. As one of the brand’s most popular coffees, it’s a top-seller.

If you prefer a lighter coffee, try Douwe Egberts Select Aroma in ground. The Arabica blend is silky, smooth, with very subtle notes of fruit, and a mild flavor.

Not sure? Try Aroma Rood, the flagship product, a delicious medium roast, medium strength coffee. We have Aroma Rood in whole beans, ground and instant.

These coffees are made for the European market, so it’s just like a cup served at a canal-side café in Amsterdam! The discount is only available through Tuesday, so order today!

Coffee vs Tea Study Looks At Drinker’s Personality

tea-vs-coffeeA new study of 2000 Americans gathered data to examine how a person’s choice of drink relates to her personality. For instance, you’d think that those of us who drink coffee in the morning would be the loud, extroverted group, but no. Turns out the tea drinkers are outgoing, and night owls, while the coffee drinkers are the creative, introverted types. A few other interesting findings:

• More than 75 percent drink their first cup of coffee or tea before 8AM.
• Tea lovers were more likely to enjoy “The Walking Dead” and “Friends” while coffee lovers prefer “The Office” and “Seinfeld.”
• Coffee drinkers prefer punk, rock, blues and jazz; tea drinkers choose classical, country, pop or hip-hop.
• Coffee types average 3.4 cups per day; tea types sip 2.7 cups.

The study was conducted on behalf of a company that makes disposable paper cups.

We Have Imported Italian Coffee Just Like Italians Drink Everyday!

itl-villa-plus-castle
If you have ever considered moving to Italy, because let’s face it, they have great coffee there, then you should investigate the small Italian villages looking to attract new residents. Several towns and villages in the country are offering homes for one Euro ($1.10 USD); some are even offering to pay a stipend if you do buy there. The catch is that the homes are abandoned, often dilapidated, needing work and improvements, so while you may get the house cheaply, you are obligated to complete planned repairs within a few years. In some cases, the buyer must open a small business, and there is usually a non-refundable deposit.

itl-villa-interior-staircaseInterestingly, many of these villages are historical centers showcasing architecture, archeological ruins, cave and underground chamber living, wine harvesting, mountain-side and seaside areas, and even featuring centuries-old stone houses at the base of a castle. Even more interesting for the Italians already living there, it turns out that these inexpensive homes have attracted Europeans and Americans, who are buying and renovating. Almost ten percent of Italy’s population consists of people from other countries.

Small villages in the country have increasingly fewer residents, as people have slowly abandoned the areas to move to larger towns for work. In addition, Italy’s birth rate has drastically fallen, with 2018 registering as the lowest on record ever.

Luckily, you don’t have to move to Italy to get real Italian coffee. At EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we have fresh and delicious Italian coffee imported from Italy. This week, we are offering a special deal on 3 of our top brands:

Burglary Spree Made Him Thirsty

Coffee-Police-LineIn a suburb of Atlanta, a block of businesses were broken into and plundered during several hours overnight one day last week. The intruder was spotted on surveillance cameras, and is accused of taking computers, tvs, sports memorabilia, and food. He tried but was unsuccessful in making a cup of coffee at one of his stops, so he grabbed the coffee itself and took that instead. Police released video images asking for the public’s help in identifying the perp.

In fact, those selections are links taking you to the page with that information. Even better, you can quickly find the coffee brands you love easily and quickly on the left menu, with an expandable list of Coffee By Brand. Just click on the plus sign for the drop-down menu of the groupings on the brand’s page. Want to see everything with one click? Select the brand or type and go directly there.

EBC-Side-Menu-CU

Another way to find the coffee you love – and perhaps even discover something new – is checking out Coffee By Type. From there, you will find different types of coffee – pods, capsules, whole bean, instant, to name a few, plus groupings of our brands by country, by organic and sustainable designations, alternatives to coffee, accessories, gift items, and chocolate and cocoa products, again, just to name a few!

Coffee-By-Type-Menu

Plus find all our teas from our home page menu, or scroll to the bottom of the left menu to see a separate set of links for our tea brands. You can always go back quickly to the top of our home page by using the up arrow displayed on the lower right side of the page.

Today Is International Coffee Day

International-coffee-day-banner-2019In the United States, International Coffee Day is September 29, 2019, celebrating coffee as the delicious beverage it is. In other parts of the world, National Coffee Day (as it is sometimes called) has most countries celebrating either today or October 1. In 2015, the International Coffee Organization officially designated the day, in Milan, Italy, as a way to promote fair trade coffee and raise awareness of the coffee growers and their challenges bringing their coffee to market. Prior to that, though, other National Coffee Days were marked in various countries. As far back as 1983, Japan began an annual day celebrating coffee; in the USA, it began in 2005, with other countries joining in with their own national day to celebrate this popular beverage. If you didn’t get a Coffee Day greeting card yet, consider this your first! Happy International Coffee Day! Use the discount above to celebrate with all your favorite brews. Don’t wait – this offer expires soon.

Most Americans Brew At Home

drip-coffeeResearch found that 89 percent of Americans make their coffee at home, noting that the convenience and cost-savings over a café pickup are fueling the numbers. Using data from 1000 people polled, there were a few other surprises. For instance, only 20 percent drink their coffee black. Two-thirds want to be able to recreate their favorite coffee shop drinks at home, but only one-third think they do it well (rating themselves an “A”). One last disclosure – almost two-thirds of respondents said making coffee was “therapeutic” for them. We say the discount above will help you with some in-home therapy, so order today!

Germany: Fundamental In Coffee’s History

Germany, much like Italy, has played a pivotal role in the history of coffee in Europe. From the opening of coffeehouses as early as the 1670’s in Hamburg and Bremen, two key shipping ports that ultimately brought coffee into Germany and eastern Europe, Germany took its place as a European coffee leader. With the spread of coffeehouses over the next 50 years, women would be found frequenting the café, and even more shockingly, meeting and chatting with other women out in the open. This was not happening in other countries, making Germany ahead of its time!

JC-TC-BANNER

One of the country’s biggest contributions to the long history of coffee is the simple coffee filter. The disposable filter that keeps the grounds out of your cup and pot was created and sold by a German woman in the early 1900s. She loved drinking coffee but hated the mess of the grounds and cleaning up. As her son would say later, she hated grounds in her cup. One morning in frustration, she grabbed a piece of blotter paper from her son’s school book sitting on the table (because writing was done with nibs dipped in ink wells). Since making coffee in Turkish style was common, so were grounds in your cup. She strained the boiled coffee through the paper and an empire was born.

filter-closeShe tested the process with friends at coffee afternoons, and eventually, she had the product patented. In the early days, the business was run out of the family home, so her two sons delivered products while her husband performed demos on how to use the product. (He eventually outsourced that job to “demonstration ladies” employed for just that.) You may have already guessed that this woman was Melitta Bentz, from Dresden. Today the company employs more than 4000 people worldwide with revenue close to $2 billion USD.
