The Dutch Celebrate This Month

In a couple of weeks, the Dutch, along with other Christian worshippers, will celebrate Easter. Then a mere week later, the people will party in honor of the birthday of their King, Willem Alexander. Both celebrations are national, public holidays, and important in the Netherlands, and here’s why.

windmill-red-tulips

easter-breadEaster is April 21, but in Holland, Easter is celebrated on both the Sunday and Easter Monday. As with most religious holidays, food and family are the center of the celebration. Breakfasts, brunch and lunch are big that weekend, and foods served include eggs (boiled, poached or fried), Easter bread (with raisins, nuts and marzipan), butter (in the shape of a lamb), croissants, cheese, ham, smoked fish and of course, chocolate (in the shape of eggs or rabbits).

Easter-bunnies-amsterdamChildren decorate boiled eggs, and later will search for decorated and chocolate eggs hidden around the house and yard by Paashaas, the Easter hare. There are also Easter markets, special brunches offered at restaurants, and in some areas of the country, Easter fires are built and enjoyed by spectators. Another tradition is the sending of Dutch tulips, more than 40,000, to Rome that will decorate St. Peter’s for Easter.

kings-dayWhile Easter is a religious- and family-centered holiday, King’s Day is spent with neighbors and friends, on the streets and in the parks. The King’s Day market is a big draw, when the sidewalks turn into a one huge flea market everywhere you turn. You may know that King’s Day was originally Princess’ Day, for Willem’s grandmother, and celebrated on her birthday when she was just Princess Juliana. When Juliana ascended the throne, the day was now Queen’s Day, and continued to be celebrated on April 30th. When Queen Beatrix, Willem’s mom, ascended the throne, she kept Queen’s Day on the last day of April even though her own birthday was in January. She chose to step down as monarch five years ago, so when her son Willem Alexander became King, the holiday was renamed King’s Day, and moved to April 27, Willem’s birthday.

Come On, Get Happy

world-happiness-2019

The United Nations annually surveys people in more than 150 countries, using six factors to gauge overall happiness. Respondents assess their lives against those factors – you’ll see those broken down in the report too. The 2019 report, released last month, shows the Netherlands at fifth, up one from last year’s report. You may recall that the Scandinavians are usually in the top spots: Finland was at the top for the second year in a row, followed by Denmark and Norway, two countries that moved up on the list. Iceland came in at fourth place. The top 10 list rounds out with Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada, and Austria. The U.S. ranks at 19 this year, down slightly from last year.

Dallmayr: Literally The Best Coffees In the World

Dallmayr as a trading company began in Munich more than 300 years ago. At the turn of the 20th century, the business was being run by Therese Randlkofer, widow of Anton, who had only purchased the building and store from Alois Dallmayr a mere two years before. Under Therese’s direction, the company was recognized as a key supplier to the royal courts of Bavaria, Germany and other European royal households.

DM-TR-Banner

Dallmayr-Bar-and-GrillThe business flourished so that the Dallmayr Delicatessen was soon recognized as one of the best in Europe. The store employed more than 70 people by 1912, and the space of the shop had been doubled by then. The Dallmayr coffee brand launched in 1933, unique at the time for roasting in the store with a unique electric roaster, and for storing coffee beans in hand-painted Nymphenburg porcelain containers.

Today, the shop is still open at the same location (rebuilt in 1950), offering over 6000 different products, along with sandwiches and salads. There is a two-starred Michelin restaurant, a café/bistro, and a raw bar, all on the original property. And, it’s still a family business.

Dallmayr coffee is flavorful with a smooth texture that is perfect for any time of day.

We think you will enjoy it too, so get 15% off your purchase of Dallmayr coffee with no minimum required.*

Dallmayr’s Quality From Bean To Cup

DM-Fav-Products-Advert-NL

The first word that comes to mind when we drink Dallmayr is smooth, from the body to the finish. The beans are carefully selected from the best coffee-growing regions, then blended and roasted at the Dallmayr production facilities in the southeastern city of Geising, about a 45-minute drive due south from Dresden.

We really enjoy Dallmayr coffee, so here’s a sampling of our favorites.

Dallmayr Prodomo is the flagship product, with a strong aroma, a full-bodied taste and smooth finish. We have whole bean and ground. Try a milder version, Prodomo Naturmild (fine and soft, with a gentle aroma).

Dallmayr French Press Selection is a blend created with help from a popular French Press maker. The grind is extra coarse, which is perfect for the French Press maker. The blend is 100% Arabica beans, with a floral and spicy aroma.

Dallmayr Kilimanjaro is a single-origin coffee from Tanzania. These unique beans are grown at the foot of the famous and highest mountain in Africa, giving the coffee a balanced flavor with a light floral note.

For the Nespresso maker, we have 9 Capsa roasts in capsules, including newer special roasts in the Capsa line: Crema d’Oro (light, mild and balanced); Chocolat (notes of caramel and dark chocolate in a smooth, creamy espresso), and Vanilla (sweet and delicate, with a delicious aroma). Other Capsa varieties: Artigiano (strong); Azzurro (intense); Ethiopia (medium); and Decaffeinato (medium/dark).

These coffees are perfect for coffee drinks, but we can tell you that any Dallmayr coffee is great on its own!

Campfire Coffee Gets Upgraded

lumeNot only can you make coffee while living off the grid, a new device will allow you to grind beans just before you brew your coffee. The company behind the device describes it as a Travel Automatic Coffee Grinder. It’s a coffee grinder, and looks and shines like a lantern. At full charge, this burr grinder can grind enough beans for 50 cups. It’s apparently quite popular for use while camping. The six LED lights stay bright for about 20 hours. Launched on Kickstarter 18 months ago, the devices are in high demand. They also offer a French press mug, light not included.

Marshmallow Coffee

peepsA national donut chain is offering an iced donut with a yellow marshmallow chick resting atop. The same chain is also adding the flavor of sugar-covered marshmallow chicks to hot coffee and espresso drinks. We aren’t sure what else to say about this, so you won’t hear another peep from us.

German Coffee Roasting: Skillful. Artful. Taste-Full.

As we often say, Germany has been important in the history of coffee around the world. This week, we share two big events in German coffee, one just this year, and one that commemorates an event more than 200 years ago.

SCA-Coffee-Championships

First, the 2019 German Barista and Latte Art Championship took place in Nuremberg this past January. The most skilled baristas from across the country competed for the title, and to be able to move on to the World Coffee Championships. Latte-Art-NurembergBarista participants had only fifteen minutes to prepare a total of twelve drinks for the panel of four judges. One drink had to be an espresso drink, one a milk drink, and one a signature drink. The harder part of the competition was that each contestant had to explain their coffee choices and their preparation to the judges watching. The Latte Art Championship, a separate event, had competitors creating intricate designs that were then judged on visual attributes, creativity, identical patters in pairs, contrast in patterns and overall performance. The winners, from coffee houses in Berlin and Hamburg respectively, will represent Germany in the world competitions. The World Barista Championship is held in April in Boston, MA while the World Latte Art Championship will be held in June in Berlin.

Google-Coffee-Zing

The second set of honors is from Google, for German chemist Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, with an animated doodle (a special, temporary modification of the logo on its homepage). Runge discovered the chemical makeup of caffeine, after studying a bag of coffee beans given to him as a gift. The doodle ran last month on the anniversary of his birthday 225 years ago. The search engine used the doodle to show the chemistry and use of coffee in the logo, along with an animated image of someone sipping coffee and feeling the zing.

Germany is also the home to three of our special German brands: Eduscho, Tchibo and Davidoff. We recommend any and all of these brands for deliciously roasted coffee.

EnjoyBetterCoffee.com offers a wide selection from these three historic brands. Plus, you’ll get 15% off your order when you order Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff coffees, with no minimum purchase required.*

Please use coupon code TCHIBO15

*Discount valid from 3/24/19 through 11:59PM ET on 3/26/19 at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with 15% off with no minimum order required on Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff coffees. PS – We have Tchibo Black and White Instant Coffee already on sale and eligible for the discount above. Instant coffee is in most homes, and regularly drunk in Europe, in part because the instant coffee for the European market is richer and fuller. This blend of select beans is good black or with cream. The freeze-dried instant coffee is in 7oz glass jars, so you can keep it dry and cool, and then reuse the jar.

The Brands Of Tchibo

2015_Tchibo LogoTchibo is a top seller, with several premium products. Try Tchibo Exclusive, great for stovetop Moka makers and espresso, or Gold Selection, an aromatic, unique, medium blend. Both are available in ground and instant. We have several other ground coffees from the Tchibo range: Feine Milde (fine and mild), Beste Bohne (100% Arabica), and Family (full and strong). Looking for a whole bean? Try Tchibo’s Sicilian Espresso roast.

2015_Eduscho logoEduscho opened its first store in Bremen in the 1950’s, soon followed by stores in major German cities. Introduced in 1959, Gala coffee was sold in bakeries which further popularized the brand in German culture. In 1980, Gala coffee was renamed to Gala Number 1 (Nr. 1) to reflect its status in the market and its flavor and quality. Eduscho Mild, made from beans grown in tropical climates, is mild, smooth and balanced, with a gentle aroma. Both are available in ground, and both are Eduscho’s top sellers.

Davidoff-Cafe-Logo-NL-BlockDavidoff Café is a luxury brand that creates smooth and flavorful coffee. One of our newest items from Davidoff Café is Crema Intense instant coffee, a special coffee. Another special instant is the Limited Edition Elements and we have 3 other Davidoff instants too. Davidoff makes delicious ground coffee in Espresso 57, Fine Aroma and Rich Aroma. We also have 2 whole beans, Espresso 57 and Crème. Finally, for the Nespresso drinkers, we have 3 different roasts, plus a capsule variety package. All Davidoff products are available for the discount above.

When Is Coffee Not Coffee? When It’s Atomo Coffee!

A new startup company, Atomo Coffee, wants to make your morning coffee without any coffee at all. The company is working on a way to “replicate a standard cup coffee – down to the taste, aroma and even mouthfeel – all with natural ingredients, none of which are coffee beans.” Created by a microbiologist, the process is trying to break down coffee to a molecular level, then rebuilt it, except without using coffee. The ground coffee product is not bitter, but quite smooth, not too dark, not too light, the company claims. This supports their findings that in a blind taste test with university students, Atomo was the clear favorite for 70% of participants.
