Meanwhile, In Italy…

This time of year, Italians anxiously await several seasonal events. There are festivals for saints, a jazz festival, a film festival, but the 2 most important food-related fests are the Truffle Festivals and the annual return of roasted chestnuts.

Chestnuts are considered a fall fruit in Italy, and have been grown in the area for centuries, with some chestnut trees honored as state monuments. Being low fat and high fiber, these vitamin-filled nuggets of flavor helped many Italians, especially those without access to farmland, to survive winters. Today, you will find street vendors roasting and selling chestnuts across the country, then serving them in paper cones. It’s a sure sign that winter, and the winter holidays, are coming.

From street gourmet to culinary gourmet, here’s a look at the various Truffle festivals held across the country in November. Many towns celebrate the fungus, which looks similar to a mushroom but has a mild garlic and earthy flavor, and just happens to deliciously complement Italian cuisine. The largest gathering is the Alba International White Truffle Festival. Also eagerly anticipated are the truffles available for sale. In 2018, two pounds of Alba truffles sold for the equivalent of $85,000 USD. Parma and San Miniato are other towns that have large gatherings in honor of the precious truffle.

trieste-port-itlAs coffee made its way into Europe through Italy, the busy port city of Trieste was vital in this regard. The founder of Hausbrandt was Austrian, yet he chose to open his coffee roasting business in Trieste. Hermann Hausbrandt, a merchant marine, is known for his innovation with transport and storage of coffee to keep it fresh. Hausbrandt also introduced the invention and use of the electric roaster right in their coffee shop, and was one of the first companies at the time to sell coffee in sealed metal containers.

Another coffee leader from Italy is Lavazza Coffee. When this coffee business was founded in 1895 by Luigi Lavazza, he pursued his passion of blending great coffee, and four generations later, it is still about that passion. Based in Turin, in the northwestern part of the country, Lavazza blends and creates the highest-quality Italian espresso. Lavazza continues to innovate new coffee blends, combining coffee beans from different regions to create premium tastes, and is always improving the packaging of their coffees to preserve freshness.

Turin-Foothills

Caffè Vergnano is one of the top Italian coffee companies, and can be found in more than 80 countries. Since Domenico Vergnano opened a grocery store in the foothills surrounding Turin more than 130 years ago, the beans have been meticulously selected and slowly roasted for the best flavor. Refreshing Coffee Drinks For Summer

The time is now, in this summer heat, to switch to iced coffee. Whether you are looking for a quick fix or a more involved preparation, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s start with everyone’s summer drink, lemonade, and turn it into a caffeinated Arnold Palmer. Try this cold brew lemonade. You’ll need:

lemonade-coffee1-2 oz lemon juice
1 oz simple syrup (see note below)
4-5 oz water
4-5 oz cold brew coffee (you can use regular brew instead)
Ice

1. Make the lemonade by combining the juice, the syrup and water in a glass. You want to make a slightly tart lemonade, not very sweet. When it tastes the way you want…

2. Add ice to the glass, then top up with the coffee. Stir and enjoy!

NOTE: Make simple syrup by combining equal amounts of water and sugar. Bring to a boil, then allow to cool. Store in the refrigerator for best results. Simple syrup is perfect for iced drinks – no trying to dissolve sugar in a cold liquid.

Affogato-2019-EAnother favorite coffee drink this summer should be an Affogato. The word means “drowned” because the espresso is poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream or gelato. The espresso should be hot, and be sure to use a spoon to get every drop. Is it a dessert? Is a drink? You decide. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

Finally, let’s try a Coconut Caramel Coffee. You’ll need:
coconut-caramel-coffee
8 oz coffee
Ice
1-2 Tablespoons coconut milk
1-2 teaspoons caramel syrup

1. Start with the coffee in a mug or glass. Stir in the milk and the syrup. Add a pinch of sweetener if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Europe’s Oldest Person, Ran a Coffee Bar, Passes Away at 116

We have written before about some of the oldest people in the world who happen to live in Italy. This month, great-grandmother Giuseppina Robucci died in the southern town of Poggio Imperiale. She is officially the last European born in 1903. (A woman in Japan, 2 months older than Robucci, is the current oldest living person in the world.) Robucci had five children, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She and her husband ran a coffee bar for much of their lives, and she was even named an honorary mayor back when she was a young 109 year old.

Coffee in the Spotlight: Italian Coffee

espresso-filter
Italians have loved coffee since it first arrived at the port of Trieste, Italy, in the 16th century. Italians drink coffee first thing in the morning, after lunch, at work and then after dinner. (Italians will point out that they don’t drink cappuccino after midday, as they consider the drink to be only for breakfast.) Coffee is an art in Italy, especially and most notably, with espresso.

In Italy, the coffee shop, known as the coffee ‘bar’, is extremely popular too! When you enter, you will find a lot of people standing while drinking their espressos. That’s right…in Italy, café patrons tend to stand for their coffee, served with a glass of water too, as a side drink. Making perfect espresso is a key skill in the bars. This week, we focus on Kimbo, Lavazza and Hausbrandt, Italian coffee roasters in the tradition of true Italian coffees.

A Note About Espresso

Espresso-TortEspresso became popular at the start of the 20th century in Italy with the development of machines built to make coffee. Espresso bars became a place to meet and socialize. Tiny cups were all the rage. The word espresso is used to describe both a roast of coffee (Espresso Roast) and a method of brewing. Espresso is brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through a compressed pack of finely ground coffee. Espresso Roast refers to coffee roasted so that it is somewhat darker than traditional American roasts. The espresso roast highlights the bitter-sweetness of the bean while keeping the acidity (the tartness) down.

These Bears Are A Different Kind of Gummy

coffee-gummiesA candy store has introduced a new product just this week: Coffee-infused, caffeinated gummy bears in three flavors. Cold brew is described as earthy; Bourbon brew is smokier and iced vanilla latte is a vanilla and almond milk espresso flavor. Reviewers found the aromas pleasantly sweet, and the amount of caffeine in a serving is equal to an espresso. The beans are even packaged in small covered cups with tiny straws for those on the go!
