We Have Coffee With Style and Taste

This week, we bring you coffee brands from three European countries: Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The coffees we have from brands born and based in these three countries are great examples of coffees distinctive to their regions.

Swiss-German-Austrian-Banner
From Germany, whose coffee houses allowed, even encouraged, women to openly patronize cafes decades before female suffrage, we bring you IDEE Kaffee, and Eilles Kaffee.

From Austria, home to carnival balls and weiner schnitzel (veal cutlets), we have Mozart Kaffee and Helmut Sachers Kaffee.

Finally, from Switzerland, the birthplace of fondue, cheeses, and milk chocolate, you can try Movenpick.

These premium coffees are delicious and flavorful, and because they are made for the European market, they have a slightly more intense flavor profile. With our discount this week, they are worth a good look – and taste! We’ll give you 15% off your order of Helmut Sachers, Eilles, IDEE, Movenpick, and Mozart coffees, with no minimum required.

We have IDEE Kaffee in ground and Gold Express Instant coffee. Both are balanced and aromatic.

Eilles Kaffee, another specialty roaster, has created a distinctive and special blend of beans grown in the mountain highlands. Their coffee has unique flavors with a delicate and mellow taste and aroma. We have Eilles Kaffee Gourmet in ground, whole beans and instant.

Der Himmlische coffee is a blend of beans cultivated in high-altitudes from around the world, giving the coffee a wonderful aroma and distinctive taste. Der Himmlische is available in ground, instant, and whole bean. Movenpick also makes capsules for the Nespresso machine, ranging from a rich Espresso Ristretto (intensity 10) to Espresso Intenso (intensity 8) to Lungo Crema (7). All of these capsules are available at our already-low prices. With the discount above, it’s a steal!

A beloved Austrian brand, named for its most famous son, Mozart, produces a coffee with an elegant composition of flavors, notes and aroma. Try Mozart Kaffee Mild, a well-balanced, delicious full-bodied coffee. We also have Mozart Kaffee Intensive coffee in ground and in instant. You’ll enjoy the powerful aroma and taste.

One of the top Austrian brands, Helmut Sachers is available in several roasts. We have Vienna Blend (fine and aromatic), Deluxe (rich and creamy, great for espresso drinks) and Espresso (rich). These roasts are available in whole beans. Café Superb is a special blend of fine beans roasted slowly, the Viennese way, creating a smoother and full-flavor coffee, and available in ground. We have three other Helmut Sachers roasts, including a decaffeinated version, and an espresso roast, all in ground.

Will Coffee Ground Oils Replace Palm?

coffee-grounds-oilA new process being developed by two Scottish men will process used coffee grounds into oil. Because coffee grounds are the largest amount of the waste from cafes, finding a way to keep them from landfills is a high priority. In addition, palm oil, an inexpensive, mass-produced oil used in food processing, is not a sustainable source. The Scots stated that the oil in coffee has a wide range of use, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, and household products. Their startup company is only in Scotland so far, but there are plans to expand into additional European cities.

Start-Up Has Grannys Baking

kuchentratsch

You read that right! A small company known as “Kuchentratsch” (cake and gossip) has opened a kitchen space to provide local cafes with the best baked goods, ones baked by a grandmother herself, or at least by a cook using her recipe. The idea, developed by a business management graduate, grew out of a desire to enjoy coffee in a café while having cake just like her grandmother makes. Using locals, the kitchen opened for business, promoting interaction among generations and a sense of community. The finished products are delivered by a group of younger staff, who manage the logistics, marketing and accounting. All grandma needs to do is bake!

Germany: Passionate About Coffee

Germany, much like Italy, has played a pivotal role in the history of coffee in Europe. There were established coffeehouse in Germany as early as the 1670’s in Hamburg and Bremen, key shipping ports that ultimately brought coffee into Germany and eastern Europe. With the spread of coffeehouses over the next 50 years, women could be found frequenting the café, and even more shockingly, met and chatted with other women in the open. This was not happening in other countries, making Germany ahead of its time!

Kaffeeklatsch-German-Coffee-Banner-600px
One of Germany’s largest contributions to the long history of coffee is the humble coffee filter. That’s right, the almost-indispensable-disposable filter that keeps the grounds out of your cup and pot was created and sold by a German woman in the early 1900s. She loved drinking coffee but hated the mess of the grounds and cleaning up. At this time in coffee history, making coffee in Turkish style was common, which creates grounds in the cup. Melitta-BentzSome did try to strain the coffee through cloth, but none of it was easy. As her son would say later, she hated grounds in her cup. One morning in frustration, she grabbed a piece of blotter paper from her son’s school book sitting on the table (because writing was done with nibs dipped in ink wells). She strained the boiled coffee through the paper and an empire was born. She tested the process with friends at coffee afternoons, and eventually, she had the product patented. In the early days, the business was run out of the family home, so her two sons delivered products while her husband performed demos on how to use the product. (He eventually outsourced that job to “demonstration ladies” employed for just that.) You may have already guessed that this woman was Melitta Bentz, from Dresden. Today the company employs more than 4000 people worldwide with revenue close to $2 billion USD.

The Rich Tradition of German Coffee

Fact: More than 80 percent of the entire German population above the age of 14 drinks coffee. That’s even more than in the United States. Jacobs Kronung is the most popular coffee drunk by German consumers. In the top five most popular brands in Germany, Dallmayr and Tchibo are in the third and fifth spots.

German-Coffee-NL-Banner-80518

This week, Jacobs, Dallmayr and Tchibo are in our spotlight, along with these other German coffee roasters: Eilles Kaffee, IDEE Kaffee, Eduscho, and Davidoff.

We have shared the history of coffee in Germany, so you may recall that coffee houses were open to both men and women in the earliest days, back in the 17th century. Women were able to sit down inside and meet with other ladies to chat. Men grumbled, and it came to be referred to as coffee and gossip (“kaffeeklatsch”), the term well-embedded in the language by the 19th century.

Today, with family and friends, coffee is served with cake (“kaffee and kuchen klatsch”), as a late afternoon break, and on holidays and Sundays. Honey almond cake, cheesecakes, fruitcakes, and the iconic Black Forest cake are some of the most popular.

Did You Know…?

> A German woman is responsible for creating the coffee maker filter, so we have her to thank for being able to drink ground-free coffee.

> Germans drink more coffee than beer or water on average.

Hamburg-cropped> Many of the brands above are based in Hamburg, the second-largest city in Germany. Hamburg is a major global trading port, located on the Elbe River, in northern Germany. The city is a popular tourist destination, with major European education and research industries, cultural and artistic venues. And, of course, the Beatles were greatly influenced by, and even performed there in their early years.

Made From Coffee For Coffee

coffee-cups-from-recycled-coffee-groundsA German designer and a Berlin start-up company have partnered to create reusable coffee cups from coffee grounds and wood particles. The components are combined to create a liquid that can be injection molded to create the espresso, cappuccino, and travel cups. The coffee grounds come from cafes in Berlin, and the wood is from sustainable sources. The dark, speckled cups are all dishwasher safe and durable. Prices range from $17 USD for one cup to sets of 8 espresso or 6 cappuccino cups, with saucers, for about $140 USD. The products were awarded the Red Dot Award for design just this year. Reuse, check. Recycle, check. Reduce, check.
