Heritage Days In The Netherlands Celebrate Culture and History

Douwe Egberts has been based in the Netherlands for more than 265 years.

While there are always cultural and social happenings in The Netherlands, September brings the celebration of Heritage Days (Open Monumentendag, as the Dutch say). Since 1987, this annual event has always been held over the second weekend of September, where some 5000 historical buildings and sites open their doors to the public, usually free of charge. The event is part of the larger European Heritage Days, which aims to make European culture and heritage more accessible.

heritage-days-e

In the Netherlands, more than 80 percent of Dutch citizens participate. This year, organizers expect a million people to take part in the 1000+ events across the country. Local groups in each city and village host related exhibitions, music and tours. Each location offers unique aspects of historical culture. For instance, The Hague reflects the political center of the country; Maastricht shows off its medieval churches; Amsterdam has canal houses; Leiden’s theatres shine, and Gouda has a magnificent city hall. So many sites, so little time.

You can celebrate Dutch Heritage too with Douwe Egberts coffee. When you order Douwe Egberts products at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, you will get 15% off, no minimum required.*

Treat The Beans With Care

bean-closeup
The biggest threats to the taste and freshness of coffee beans are air, moisture and time. In a perfect world, coffee would be ground, brewed and drunk immediately. When you buy fresh beans, you should try to use them within 2 weeks. Store them in the bag in which they come, grind them as you need them. Seal the bag with tape or a strong clip after forcing out as much air as possible. You can also store them in an air-tight canister, but make sure the container does not allow light to get in. We do not recommend storing beans (or ground coffee, for that matter) in the freezer or refrigerator. When the coffee is moved in and out of the cold, condensation forms on the coffee. That moisture will then refreeze and thaw each and every time you move it from the cold to the ambient room temperature. This will quickly deplete the flavorful oils of the coffee, making your coffee taste flat. Life’s too short for bad coffee.

The Netherlands In The News

Budweiser Now Available in Netherlands

budThe American “King of Beers” is taking the show on the road to become available in pubs and restaurants in the country. Very soon, the beer will also be available in grocery stores. Economists predict an uphill battle for the beer brand, as it is not a well-known brand. In addition, the current market trend in the country is towards specialty, artisanal and local beers.

Advice: Repair Your Coffee Machine, Don’t Replace It

Launching last week, an ad campaign is running in the Netherlands to encourage people to repair broken household good and torn clothing. The promotional campaign, running on television, the internet and radio, is the work of an industry foundation that produces ads that encourage societal improvements. The foundation estimates that people throw away 40 pounds of electric equipment every year. Their website will have tips about repairing common items and offer advice on the mending.

Explore The Brands of Tchibo

This week, we are highlighting 3 of our premium German brands: Tchibo, Davidoff, and Eduscho. Let’s look at how these brands grew into the icons of coffee they are today.

Tchibo-Banner-082519-cup

Tchibo is German coffee producer that started selling coffee via mail orders more than 60 years ago. The name Tchibo comes from the word ‘Tchiling’ (the name of a founding partner) and the German word for ‘bean’ (bohne). Thanks to its popularity, Tchibo opened a store next door to their roasting plant to sell coffee directly to customers. Their coffee was sold in new see-through containers and customers were given samples of brewed coffee to allow patrons to choose their favorites. Within a few years, there were more than 70 shops in Germany with a new one opening almost every week. Over the next 30 years, Tchibo opened roasting plants and coffee shops in Britain, Poland, Hungary and Russia. Today, Tchibo has one of the largest chains of coffee cafés with over 1000 retail locations worldwide.

Davidoff-espresso-advertZino Davidoff (1906-1994) lived his life with the belief that a taste for quality was a taste for life. Coffee was one of his greatest passions, starting each day with an espresso or two. The spirit of Zino lives on in the company as a source of inspiration and as a mandate for the business. Because only the finest quality will do, you can be sure that Davidoff coffee is as close to perfection as Zino would want.

Eduard Schopf began the family business, Eduscho coffee, in 1924 in Germany with a direct focus on fresh coffee, from the beans to the preparation. Because mail was the quickest way to reach a lot of customers, Eduscho began as one of the earliest mail order business. Eventually the business had stores in all major German cities and in bakeries, and the brand hurtled into a national presence. Around the turn of this century, Eduscho was acquired by Tchibo and expanded into Europe – Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Britain.

We love all these brands. You will too! We’ll give you 15% off your order of Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff with no minimum purchase required.*

Germany Celebrates Fall of Wall 30th Anniversary

berlin-wallA week-long city-wide festival in Berlin this November will commemorate when the Berlin Wall was taken down. At sites across the city, installations will tell the story of how it happened, with images, films, and sound. The event has been coordinated with museums, memorial sites, educational and artists groups, with different elements of the story told at each stop. At one stop, Berliners who were separated because of the wall tell their stories; at another stop, a gallery, experience an artistic takeover of the Wall. On November 9th, the date the Wall fell, stages across the city will showcase renowned artists connected to the events that year, and those whose work represents freedom. More than 100 events are planned, including discussion panels, guided tours, readings, theatre productions, and poetry slams. A free app for your cell or tablet has been developed that will use augmented reality technology at the wall location for those who want to see what the wall looked like at the time on their device.

Beat The Heat With a Unique Coffee Treat!

Writer Jane Austen wrote to her sister in late summer 1796:

Jane-Austin-Hot-Weather

While it is hot in some parts of the USA, Europe has been experiencing record-setting heat for two months now. In June, a city in France endured an all-time high of 115⁰F, while several other countries, including Austria, Luxembourg, and Germany, logged new high temperatures too, making June the hottest on record. July was much of the same – forest fires, buckled train tracks, air quality warnings, and drought-like conditions. Late in July, several countries issued “red alerts” as the temperatures increased. Britain logged 101⁰F in Cambridge; the Netherlands had 104⁰F in the south, breaking a record more than 50 years standing. Germany hit a record with 106⁰F in the western region of the country. Many homes and businesses do not have air conditioning, and with water-usage restrictions and dry fields, it seems most Europeans are just trying to stay cool.

iced-coffee-short-blue-and-white-strawsWhile there is not much that can be done about the temperatures, there are plenty of things that someone can do to beat the heat – including our favorite, iced coffee! Summer is perfect for this treat. We have a recipe with some suggestions on the newest trends in iced coffee below, but in the meantime, we are offering a sweet deal on our coffee and products.

Coffee Trends This Summer

Summer is the season of iced coffee, and this season’s big trend, again, is cold-brew coffee. Those who love it say cold-brew is particularly smooth because the cold water slowly extracts the coffee from the beans. (Cold-brew is easy to make, and of course you
can use any of our coffees. See below.)

iced-coffee-summer-trendsBut this summer, look for unique styles of the brew, new and surprising flavors, and techniques that kick-up your coffee drink a notch. Here are a few:

–Floral flavors such as rose, violet, and elderflower
–Summer herbs, added to simple syrup, such as mint, basil, and rosemary
–Using different varieties and blends of coffees
–Infusing the cold-brew with surprising flavors such as juniper and agave; cocoa; pepper; vanilla bean, and vodka

How To Make Cold-Brew Coffee

cold-brew1. Use high-quality beans (we have plenty from which to choose). Grind the beans semi-coarse.

2. Stir ¾ cup grounds with 4 cups of water, and put in the fridge for 6-18 hours to make a concentrate.

3. Strain in a sieve lined with a coffee filter. For concentrate, use one-part concentrate with two-parts water to start. You can adjust the proportions of water and grounds depending on how you prefer your coffee. Enjoy!

Life Happens. Coffee Helps. Try Douwe Egberts.

DE-July-Banner-2019-E

Douwe Egberts has been roasting and marketing coffee for more than 265 years. Being one of the first businesses offering that commodity both locally and regionally, it is no surprise that Douwe Egberts is not only first in coffee, but is also responsible for many “firsts” in the Industry. Let’s take a quick look at some of the highlights:

• Introduced the red seal as its logo, an iconic image still used today

• Offered a customer loyalty program through stamps on their packages

DE-Seals-History-Portrait-300px• Early on, sold coffee via a traveling salesman, the son Douwe Egberts, spreading the popularity of the brand

• Pioneered pursuing sustainable and environmentally-friendly policies and procedures for growing and harvesting coffee

• Created the Douwe Egberts Foundation, working in-country where coffee beans are grown

• Introduced a vending machine that responded to a person’s face, where a yawn caused a cup of hot Douwe Egberts coffee to be delivered

• Recently began selling tea in China (coffee too)

Douwe Egberts coffee is the result of innovation over time, and that’s one reason the brand is known worldwide. Douwe Egberts has a range of delicious coffee at economical prices (even before our discount offer!).

And Speaking of Innovation in The Netherlands…

A Dutch company is using small drones to control the number of flying pest insects that plague flower growers. A pilot program started last month is trying the drones to control a specific moth. Results of the program will be reviewed for effectiveness, and in looking to improve the technology.

NL-Delivery-Robot-300pxThe largest supermarket chain in the country has started a trial of grocery-delivery through a delivery robot. The robot is an electric vehicle that can travel up to eight kilometers, and is being tested within the campus of a high-tech school, as the vehicle is not allowed on the road. Groceries are packed inside the device, which makes its way to the delivery location using cameras and sensors. The customer will need to step outside to get their order.

dfw-robotsIn other robotic news, a Dutch company has built a line of robot vehicles now being tested at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to handle checked bags for customers. Used specifically for customers at the international terminal who are rechecking bags after clearing customs and security for domestic flights, travelers place their bags on the robot, use the touch screen to identify their airline, and the bag is transported to the correct baggage belt.

DE-Yawn-Activated-CoffeeOne final note: The vending machine mentioned above, originally seen as a marketing ploy, was an early iteration of “gesture recognition,” cutting-edge technology poised to grow by almost 30% over the next 5 years.
