Coffee In The News, Expanded Edition, From

Turns out, coffee has been in the news recently, and sometimes for the most unexpected reasons!

Let’s start down under, in Melbourne, where three different cafes offer a freshly brewed organic coffee that costs just over $100 USD per cup, or in this case, per glass goblet. With flavor notes of lychee, passionfruit, cognac, and cocoa, it’s a “lavish” and special blend that costs about $3500 USD per kilo.

air-force-coffee-mug-cropIn news from the Air Force, there is discussion around the costs for replacement coffee mugs used by personnel working on air-refueling tankers. The cups are able to reheat the liquid, but are easily dropped, and the handle is the first to go. The department is replacing the mugs, at $1280 apiece, when this happens. The Air Force is looking into ways to produce new handles, possibly with a 3D printer, to help save money.

If you’d rather stay planted firmly on the ground, you can stay in a tiny house (of TV fame) that is powered by coffee. Well, ok, a generator powers the 275-square foot home using a biofuel blend of 80 percent coffee oil extracted from coffee grounds. The space includes a loft bed, full-sized bathroom, spa tub, and cedar porch. Unfortunately, it’s booked solid for its limited run at its current location near Boston.

edible-water-cropA UK company has been extracting natural minerals from plants and seaweed in order to create waste-free alternatives to disposable plastics such as bottles, cups, and plates. Its first product is an edible water bottle made from brown seaweed. Seaweed decomposes in weeks, it’s cheap and easy to grow and harvest, plus it’s readily available on coastlines. Now, company resources are working with the brown seaweed to make a sustainable paper cup for to-go drinks. The European Union has a goal to make all packaging reusable or recyclable by 2030.

Coffee And Your Health

Turkish-coffee-300pxA Spanish scientist has found that Turkish coffee is the richest in polyphenols, a compound in coffee that research suggests helps reduce the risk of heart disease. Scientists acknowledged this after studying the locals from a Greek island who happen to live beyond the age of 90. These locals drink coffee daily, 3-4 cups per day. We have Turkish coffee under Coffee By Type, if you want to experiment.

Also in the news this week was the release of a report that found women who drank four or more cups of coffee per day had a 23 percent lower chance of getting rosacea, a skin disorder, compared to those who drank less than a cup a month. As always, further studies are required to understand how it all works.

Not that any of us need more reasons to drink coffee, but it’s good to know anyway!

And Finally, Just In Time For Halloween…

Real-life paranormal investigators have found that a coffee shop in Marietta, Georgia, is “definitely haunted.” Baristas had been reporting strange things: “ghostly whispers,” knocked over chairs, and other items out of place. Shop owners invited the paranormal PI’s to check into it. During their time in the café, they and others heard a baby crying, and with their electromagnetic reading equipment, claimed that some ‘uncooperative spirits’ were hanging out in a corner booth, and in a hallway. With Halloween just around the corner, seems the timing of this “news” is just a bit too coincidental. Just sayin’.

Here’s a bit about each company and some of their best roasts.

Caffe-Trombetta-icon-nl-Crop-rectangleWhen Vittorio Trombetta began roasting and selling coffee in 1890, he chose to open his shop very near the main terminal of the train station in Rome. He wanted his shop to be a place for travelers, giving them a chance to experience coffee in the true Italian tradition. Word quickly spread that this shop served premium quality coffee and the shop soon filled with travelers and locals. Over the next 60 years, the company grew and gained its reputation as a producer of quality coffee, particularly espresso. Vittorio promoted his coffee using vacuum packaging, one of the first coffee companies to do so. We have ground roasts from Classico, to Gusto Forte and Gusto Pieno. We also have Caffè Trombetta Gold Bar whole beans, which makes a soft, gentle espresso with a strong aroma. We also have 3 roasts in Nespresso-compatible capsules, including a decaffeinated version.

bristot-nl-iconAt the turn of the 20th century, Domenico Bristot was living in Vienna and hanging out with a local coffee roaster, leading to a fascination with the art of blending, roasting and drinking coffee. When he returned to Italy after the Great War, he opened his own small coffee roasting business, using the new and unusual techniques he learned in Austria. He created a coffee that had an intense aroma with sweet and fruity notes, very unlike the coffee of the day. Bristot continued to search for the beans and roasting styles that would result in the perfect espresso. One hundred years later, Bristot still produces espresso and other premium blends using their high standards, cutting-edge technology, and innovation. We have a range of Bristot coffees, including whole bean and Nespresso-compatible capsules. Try Bristot Speciale Whole Beans for real Italian espresso, including intense flavor, with notes of citrus and chocolate finish. Bristot Classico is just that: a classic espresso blend of beans, rich and complex.

CAFFE-VERGNANO-nl-iconDomenico Vergnano opened a grocery store in the foothills surrounding Turin more than 130 years ago. Today, Caffè Vergnano is one of the top Italian coffee companies, exporting coffee to more than 80 countries. In addition to their meticulous approach to coffee selection, Caffè Vergnano also slow roasts the bean for no more than 22 minutes, then inspects for quality. Try Caffè Vergnano drip coffee with 100% Arabica beans. We have regular and decaffeinated in whole beans. We have Caffè Vergnano espresso fine grind, espresso medium grind, decaf fine grind, plus 5 roasts in whole bean, six roasts in capsules, including Decaf, for the Nespresso machine, now in compostable capsules.

Hausbrandt-nl-iconAlthough the founder of Hausbrandt was Austrian, he opened his coffee-roasting business in Trieste, Italy. Hermann Hausbrandt is known for innovation with transport and coffee storage. Hausbrandt also introduced the invention and use of the electric roaster and was one of the first to sell coffee in sealed metal containers. We have a wide selection of Hausbrandt whole bean, ground coffee, including two types of decaffeinated coffee. Try Hausbrandt Gourmet ground coffee, with spicy and citrus flavors from the delicately roasted 100% Arabica beans. Venezia Espresso in whole beans delivers a full, sweet and toasty flavor and aroma. We have Hausbrandt gift tins with beautiful artwork and special coffee blends at a super value.

misceladoro-nl-iconMiscela D’Oro is committed to sourcing the best raw coffee beans, creating blends that are then carefully and specially roasted. The technique, blending the green beans before roasting, though non-traditional, creates a full-bodied espresso with a rich, thick crema. We have a range of Miscela D’Oro espresso in ground, whole beans, and Nespresso-compatible capsules. Try whole bean or ground Espresso, in tins, at a size and price worth trying. We also have two of their organic coffees in whole bean and in capsules.

Pellini-nl-iconPellini, a family business that originally produced medicinal herbs, moved to roasting coffee in 1947 in Verona. Today, Pellini is known for high-quality, gourmet, Italian espresso. Quality is the utmost priority for Pellini, from their quality control to a tasters’ panel to achieving Kosher certification, Pellini offers some of the best Italian coffee you will ever taste. Pellini Top is their crown jewel, a special coffee made with 100% Arabica beans specially roasted to deliver a smooth, full-bodied espresso, which we have in ground and Decaffeinated ground as well. We also have 4 types of Nespresso-compatible capsules, including BIO Organic, 100% Arabica beans. BIO is also available in ground, packaged in a resealable tin.

sant-eustachio-nl-iconSant Eustachio is known for its wood roasting of coffee beans. Based in the heart of Rome, just a few steps from the Pantheon, Sant Eustachio slowly roasts beans over slightly smoky wood in the back of the shop, then air-cools the beans. This roasting technique creates a mild coffee with a fragrant aroma. In addition to espresso, Sant Eustachio offers Moka, and Filtro coffee blends for a flavorful cup. We have options in ground and whole bean, plus Nespresso-compatible capsules in 2 package sizes.

Tiramisu Guild Rejects “Creative” Tiramisu

Creative-TiramisuThe Tiramisu World Cup, being held for only the second time in history, will award two winners this year. One award will go to the best “classic” recipe and the other to the best “creative” recipe. That creativity means adding a twist, like chilies, wasabi, beer, though organizers don’t want the recipe distorted. The Tiramisu Guild, a separate local entity that represents 50 area businesses, does not want to be involved with anything trying to change the traditional recipe. Last year, more than 700 participants vied for the one award, fifty percent from Italy, with the majority of entrants being women. This year, applications are open for 180 judges who will choose the world’s best tiramisu over four days of heavy eating, uh, competition.

Here are just a few tastes of the top European coffee brands

Italian-Coffee-Intl-Coffee-DayFirst up, Italy. Italy is the cradle of coffee civilization. Maybe that’s why there are some serious rituals and customs when ordering coffee in Italy, especially for what and when. The science of espresso has been honed through the decades here, so the flavors and aromas are fragrant and strong. Beans are ground at the time of ordering, so cafes themselves can be rather noisy places. You’ll get a glass of water with the coffee, to cleanse your palate before and after the coffee. Drink up quickly, you may as well, since you are likely standing when you are served. has an extensive selection of Italian coffees, all premium and artfully crafted coffees. From Lavazza, choose from many ground coffees, from Caffe Espresso (dark and velvety) to Qualita Rossa (a balanced blend perfect with milk) to Classico (full-bodied with fruity notes) to Intenso (dark, bold, smoky), with many options in between, and beyond! Several of these are available in whole beans, and we also have Lavazza roasts for Nespresso. We can’t go into all 31 roasts here, but trust us, Lavazza is, as they say, “From Italy with passion.”

Austrian-Coffee-Intl-Coffee-DayNext is Austria. Home to some of the oldest coffee houses in the Western world, the traditional cafes are in Vienna and Salzburg. The servers wear dinner jackets, and serve your coffee on small silver plates, with a glass of water alongside, and sometimes, a piece of chocolate. Everyone drinks the Melange, a coffee drink with frothed milk and steamed coffee, similar to a cappuccino. Have one any time of day.

We offer a range of coffees from the top Austrian brand, Helmut Sachers, including Vienna Blend (fine and aromatic), Deluxe (rich and creamy, great for espresso drinks) and Espresso (rich). These roasts are available in both ground and whole beans. Superb is a special blend of fine beans roasted slowly, the Viennese way, creating a smoother and full-flavor coffee.

Let’s head to France for delicious coffee and chocolate drinks.
French-Coffee-Croissant-ParisStreetside cafes line the streets, with small round tables where a leisurely coffee is the rule. In fact, most of the time, the chairs will be turned to the street or corner or square facing out just to watch the world go by. Café au lait, drip coffee with plenty of milk, is often consumed in a bowl with breakfast. Noisette, another popular drink, is an espresso with just a dash of milk. The name refers to hazelnuts, because the coffee turns to that color once the milk is added.

We have coffees from Carte Noire, a top French coffee brand, in ground, whole beans, Senseo coffee pods, and decaffeinated ground. We also have A L’ancienne instant chocolate in assorted size and serving options. In addition, we have two different French brands of fruit candy and pastilles.

Swiss-Coffee-Intl-Coffee-Day-400pxFinally, our whirlwind tour lands in Switzerland, where coffee comes in a real cup with a small piece of chocolate to enjoy alongside, and you’re expected to pay with cash. You’ll find to-go coffee places at railway stations. In restaurants, coffee is ordered and served at the end of the meal.

Our Swiss brands include Davidoff Café, available as instant, ground, Nespresso capsules, and even one roast, Davidoff Café Crème, in whole beans. Davidoff Café makes premium coffee, with a luxurious taste and aroma. As the founder of the brand said: “I have a simple taste, only the best.” Another famous Swiss brand is Movenpick, and we have one of their most popular roasts, Der Himmlische, in ground and whole bean. We also have four Movenpick roasts, including decaffeinated, in Nespresso capsules.

You’ll find all our brands by country on the Coffee By Type page.

The DNA of Coffee

Genome-Arabica-250Just this week, Lavazza and Illycaffè announced that they have achieved the first fully sequenced genome for arabica coffee and available to the public. The project began in 2015, with the goal to ensure future coffee agriculture. Per the researchers, having access to the genome is “an essential precursor to unlocking the potential of genetics research to transform coffee production.” (Note: The download requires registration and specialized software to open the file.) We aren’t sure what all this might do, but we are watching and will keep you posted.

Experience A Cup Above

Imagine George Clooney. (It’s ok to linger on that thought…)

Now imagine him walking over to the Nespresso machine, and then serving you a perfectly prepared cup of espresso just the way you like it.

If you lived in Europe, this would be a familiar scenario, as Mr. Clooney has been the face of Nespresso for more than a decade. He is considered the brand’s ambassador, and he highlights the specialty of Nespresso coffee making, rather than himself. It turns out that Europeans have long enjoyed and purchased Nespresso coffee pods, which account for almost half of the ground coffee sales in the European market. In fact, the market for the capsules is growing much faster than the coffee market in general, as much as five times as fast per year for several years now.

americano-w-strokeBecause of the disposable capsules, Nespresso machines are often compared to Keurig machines. As it happens, the only real similarity is the single cup serving of coffee. Nespresso machines extract coffee with highly pressurized water, where the Keurig is more akin to drip coffee. Nespresso capsules are smaller than K-cups, and a large majority are recyclable. Nespresso machines make espresso, where Keurig does not. (Not sure about espresso? Make an Americano by adding another portion of water to the brewed espresso.)

Even better for consumers, many coffee brands are now making Nespresso-compatible capsules since the patents on them began expiring in 2012. So many high-end and premium brands make capsules for use in Nespresso machines. Here at, we have several brands of European coffee in capsules:

Lavazza, Miscela D’Oro, Pellini, Davidoff, Caffe Vergnano, Kimbo, Caffe Trombetta, Movenpick, Bristot, and Dallmayr.

This week, get 15% off all our Nespresso-compatible capsules with no minimum order.*

Please use coupon code: CAPSULES

*Discount valid from 9/09/18 through 11:59PM ET on 9/11/18 at with no minimum order for Nespresso-compatible capsules only. Offer not redeemable for cash. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products. Questions? Call us at 800.582.6617 Mon-Fri 9AM-5PM ET.

Be Sure To Check Out These Capsules

You’ll find all our capsules under Coffee By Type, Capsules, and from there, select Nespresso Capsules.

From Italy, we have Lavazza capsules in four roasts, including decaf; Kimbo in three roasts, and Pellini in four roasts, including one made from organically cultivated coffee beans. We also have organic roasts from Miscela D’Oro, Organic Purezza, and from Bristot with their BIO Organic capsules.

We have several roasts from Miscela D’Oro in capsules, and many of them are promotionally priced. Miscela D’Oro is a company that is growing, so expect to see more from them. Best of all, the discount is valid on those already-low prices too.

A new range of capsules from Caffe Trombetta, another Italian coffee brand, is now available, with great prices and also available for the discount above.

Several capsules are made with recycled and/or biodegradable material. Italian-based Caffe Vergnano makes capsules that are eco-friendly, and can be entirely composted and/or recycled.

Clooney appeared in the first ad for Nespresso back in 2006, where he overheard 2 women talking in glowing terms about Nespresso, though Clooney thinks they are talking about him. When he realizes his mistake, the long-used tag line was delivered: “Nespresso – what else?” If you ask us, we say nothing else compares to Nespresso machine coffee.
