Beat The Heat With a Unique Coffee Treat!

Writer Jane Austen wrote to her sister in late summer 1796:

Jane-Austin-Hot-Weather

While it is hot in some parts of the USA, Europe has been experiencing record-setting heat for two months now. In June, a city in France endured an all-time high of 115⁰F, while several other countries, including Austria, Luxembourg, and Germany, logged new high temperatures too, making June the hottest on record. July was much of the same – forest fires, buckled train tracks, air quality warnings, and drought-like conditions. Late in July, several countries issued “red alerts” as the temperatures increased. Britain logged 101⁰F in Cambridge; the Netherlands had 104⁰F in the south, breaking a record more than 50 years standing. Germany hit a record with 106⁰F in the western region of the country. Many homes and businesses do not have air conditioning, and with water-usage restrictions and dry fields, it seems most Europeans are just trying to stay cool.

iced-coffee-short-blue-and-white-strawsWhile there is not much that can be done about the temperatures, there are plenty of things that someone can do to beat the heat – including our favorite, iced coffee! Summer is perfect for this treat. We have a recipe with some suggestions on the newest trends in iced coffee below, but in the meantime, we are offering a sweet deal on our coffee and products.

Coffee Trends This Summer

Summer is the season of iced coffee, and this season’s big trend, again, is cold-brew coffee. Those who love it say cold-brew is particularly smooth because the cold water slowly extracts the coffee from the beans. (Cold-brew is easy to make, and of course you
can use any of our coffees. See below.)

iced-coffee-summer-trendsBut this summer, look for unique styles of the brew, new and surprising flavors, and techniques that kick-up your coffee drink a notch. Here are a few:

–Floral flavors such as rose, violet, and elderflower
–Summer herbs, added to simple syrup, such as mint, basil, and rosemary
–Using different varieties and blends of coffees
–Infusing the cold-brew with surprising flavors such as juniper and agave; cocoa; pepper; vanilla bean, and vodka

How To Make Cold-Brew Coffee

cold-brew1. Use high-quality beans (we have plenty from which to choose). Grind the beans semi-coarse.

2. Stir ¾ cup grounds with 4 cups of water, and put in the fridge for 6-18 hours to make a concentrate.

3. Strain in a sieve lined with a coffee filter. For concentrate, use one-part concentrate with two-parts water to start. You can adjust the proportions of water and grounds depending on how you prefer your coffee. Enjoy!

Italian Military Exercises Serve Up Strategy and Espresso

ITL-Soldiers-EspressoThe Italian Army’s paratrooper brigade has been taking part in “Swift Response” exercises in eastern Europe this summer, being dropped into the field, then searching for and capturing “the enemy.” One of the most important pieces of equipment they carry is the portable espresso machine, because, well, they love espresso. In their foxholes, the Italians brew espresso, and the other combatants have noticed. An American adviser taking part in the exercises noted that the Italian paratroopers are battle-ready, even when gripping a tiny cup of coffee. In a recent night battle, the paratroopers successfully held their position through a mock challenge. You can be sure they celebrated the win with an espresso.

Refreshing Coffee Drinks For Summer

The time is now, in this summer heat, to switch to iced coffee. Whether you are looking for a quick fix or a more involved preparation, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s start with everyone’s summer drink, lemonade, and turn it into a caffeinated Arnold Palmer. Try this cold brew lemonade. You’ll need:

lemonade-coffee1-2 oz lemon juice
1 oz simple syrup (see note below)
4-5 oz water
4-5 oz cold brew coffee (you can use regular brew instead)
Ice

1. Make the lemonade by combining the juice, the syrup and water in a glass. You want to make a slightly tart lemonade, not very sweet. When it tastes the way you want…

2. Add ice to the glass, then top up with the coffee. Stir and enjoy!

NOTE: Make simple syrup by combining equal amounts of water and sugar. Bring to a boil, then allow to cool. Store in the refrigerator for best results. Simple syrup is perfect for iced drinks – no trying to dissolve sugar in a cold liquid.

Affogato-2019-EAnother favorite coffee drink this summer should be an Affogato. The word means “drowned” because the espresso is poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream or gelato. The espresso should be hot, and be sure to use a spoon to get every drop. Is it a dessert? Is a drink? You decide. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

Finally, let’s try a Coconut Caramel Coffee. You’ll need:
coconut-caramel-coffee
8 oz coffee
Ice
1-2 Tablespoons coconut milk
1-2 teaspoons caramel syrup

1. Start with the coffee in a mug or glass. Stir in the milk and the syrup. Add a pinch of sweetener if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Hausbrandt-nl-iconAlthough the founder of Hausbrandt the brand was Austrian, he opened a coffee roasting business in Trieste in 1892. The founder, a merchant marine introduced the electric roaster and was one of the first to sell coffee in sealed metal containers in the early 20th century.

CAFFE-VERGNANO-nl-iconDomenico Vergnano opened a grocery store in the foothills of surrounding Turin more than 130 years ago. Today, Caffè Vergnano is one of the top Italian coffee companies, exporting coffee to more than 80 countries.

misceladoro-nl-iconWhen the Urbano family started roasting small batches of coffee in 1946, the guiding principle of Miscela D’Oro was to choose the highest quality raw beans. The company remains committed to sourcing the best raw coffee beans, carefully blending the beans while still green, then roasting them to produce a full-bodied espresso with a rich, thick crema.

sant-eustachio-nl-iconSant Eustachio is known for its wood roasting of coffee beans. Based in the heart of Rome, just a few steps from the Pantheon, Sant Eustachio slowly roasts beans over slightly smoky wood in the back of the shop, followed by air-cooling. This roasting technique creates a mild coffee with a fragrant aroma.

Illy-nl-icon-editIlly’s founder developed the modern espresso machine. Today, the third generation of the family is still in the business of producing rich, full-bodied, velvety smooth coffee. The signature blend combines nine sustainably-grown Arabica beans from 4 continents.

bristot-nl-iconThe Bristot signature is quality and excellence. Their high standards, cutting-edge technology, development, innovation and certification, including Kosher certified, result in premium coffee blends.

Europe’s Oldest Person, Ran a Coffee Bar, Passes Away at 116

We have written before about some of the oldest people in the world who happen to live in Italy. This month, great-grandmother Giuseppina Robucci died in the southern town of Poggio Imperiale. She is officially the last European born in 1903. (A woman in Japan, 2 months older than Robucci, is the current oldest living person in the world.) Robucci had five children, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She and her husband ran a coffee bar for much of their lives, and she was even named an honorary mayor back when she was a young 109 year old.
