Coffee in the Spotlight: Italian Coffee

espresso-filter
Italians have loved coffee since it first arrived at the port of Trieste, Italy, in the 16th century. Italians drink coffee first thing in the morning, after lunch, at work and then after dinner. (Italians will point out that they don’t drink cappuccino after midday, as they consider the drink to be only for breakfast.) Coffee is an art in Italy, especially and most notably, with espresso.

In Italy, the coffee shop, known as the coffee ‘bar’, is extremely popular too! When you enter, you will find a lot of people standing while drinking their espressos. That’s right…in Italy, café patrons tend to stand for their coffee, served with a glass of water too, as a side drink. Making perfect espresso is a key skill in the bars. This week, we focus on Kimbo, Lavazza and Hausbrandt, Italian coffee roasters in the tradition of true Italian coffees.

Kimbo – “Where espresso is a passion”

kimboAll Kimbo coffees exemplify the great Neapolitan coffee tradition for which Italy is famous. Kimbo has a range of espresso too.

Top Sellers: Napoletano is the medium roast that is suitable for most coffee makers. Aroma Gold, available in ground and whole bean, is 100% Arabica beans roasted to perfection so that its rich aroma, full body and delicious flavor shine through. Kimbo capsules for the Nespresso machine are available in three roasts, plus a variety package of one of each, and we even have 10 packs of Armonia and Napoli capsules on sale already, so you’ll really save with the discount above.

Hausbrandt – “A legacy of passion and excellence”

Haus_Espresso-Cup-CropAlthough the founder of Hausbrandt was Austrian, he opened a coffee roasting business in Trieste. The founder, a merchant marine, is known for his innovation with transport and storage of coffee to maintain freshness. We have several roasts, all in whole bean, plus a Decaf in ground.

Top Sellers: H. Hausbrandt whole beans, a little sweet, and a little spicy, medium roast, with nut and cocoa notes. Trieste Espresso is full-bodied, with a toasty aroma, and notes of baked goods, cocoa and anise.

Lavazza – “The coffee of Wimbledon”

Lavazza-espresso-advertLavazza is all about aroma, quality and excellence. One of the first companies to mix coffee of different origins to create blends that taste delicious, Lavazza offers regular and espresso options.

Top Sellers: Qualita Rossa, available in ground and whole bean, is a blend of Robusta and Arabica beans, medium roast, good for any time. Qualita Oro, made from 100% Arabica beans, is full-bodied, with a good crema, and available in ground and whole beans. We have a wide range of Lavazza coffee, so there is something for everyone.

A Note About Espresso

Espresso-TortEspresso became popular at the start of the 20th century in Italy with the development of machines built to make coffee. Espresso bars became a place to meet and socialize. Tiny cups were all the rage. The word espresso is used to describe both a roast of coffee (Espresso Roast) and a method of brewing. Espresso is brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through a compressed pack of finely ground coffee. Espresso Roast refers to coffee roasted so that it is somewhat darker than traditional American roasts. The espresso roast highlights the bitter-sweetness of the bean while keeping the acidity (the tartness) down.

These Bears Are A Different Kind of Gummy

coffee-gummiesA candy store has introduced a new product just this week: Coffee-infused, caffeinated gummy bears in three flavors. Cold brew is described as earthy; Bourbon brew is smokier and iced vanilla latte is a vanilla and almond milk espresso flavor. Reviewers found the aromas pleasantly sweet, and the amount of caffeine in a serving is equal to an espresso. The beans are even packaged in small covered cups with tiny straws for those on the go!

Italian Coffee: Love At First Sip

Debut-Espresso

Italy holds a key role in the history of coffee in Europe. It was in Italy, in fact, that the best-brewed coffee was produced the first-time using steam and pressure. We’re talking about espresso, of course. With the Industrial Revolution well under way, inventors were looking for ways to use steam to brew coffee more quickly. An Italian patent for a new-fangled device in 1884 describes “steam machinery for the economic and instantaneous confection of coffee beverage.” Unfortunately, that device was only used for the Turin General Exposition in the same year, where more than ten thousand exhibitors welcomed three million visitors.

patent-espresso-machineTwenty years later, Luigi Bezzerra, a manufacturer in Milan, invented the first of a series of commercial espresso machines. Early versions heated the water with a flame, making the regulation of heat and steam inconsistent, so the machine had a hard time catching on. Only when a clever designer added the first pressure release valve, along with a steam wand, did the machines start to be produced and used commonly. Introduced at the 1906 Milan Fair, “cafeé espresso“ was a hit, and similar coffee machines were soon popping up all over Italy.

This week, we are putting 3 big Italian roasters in the spotlight:

Experience A Cup Above

Imagine George Clooney. (It’s ok to linger on that thought…)

George-Clooney-Nespresso-Banner
Now imagine him walking over to the Nespresso machine, and then serving you a perfectly prepared cup of espresso just the way you like it.

If you lived in Europe, this would be a familiar scenario, as Mr. Clooney has been the face of Nespresso for more than a decade. He is considered the brand’s ambassador, and he highlights the specialty of Nespresso coffee making, rather than himself. It turns out that Europeans have long enjoyed and purchased Nespresso coffee pods, which account for almost half of the ground coffee sales in the European market. In fact, the market for the capsules is growing much faster than the coffee market in general, as much as five times as fast per year for several years now.

americano-w-strokeBecause of the disposable capsules, Nespresso machines are often compared to Keurig machines. As it happens, the only real similarity is the single cup serving of coffee. Nespresso machines extract coffee with highly pressurized water, where the Keurig is more akin to drip coffee. Nespresso capsules are smaller than K-cups, and a large majority are recyclable. Nespresso machines make espresso, where Keurig does not. (Not sure about espresso? Make an Americano by adding another portion of water to the brewed espresso.)

Even better for consumers, many coffee brands are now making Nespresso-compatible capsules since the patents on them began expiring in 2012. So many high-end and premium brands make capsules for use in Nespresso machines. Here at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we have several brands of European coffee in capsules:

Lavazza, Miscela D’Oro, Pellini, Davidoff, Caffe Vergnano, Kimbo, Caffe Trombetta, Movenpick, Bristot, and Dallmayr.

This week, get 15% off all our Nespresso-compatible capsules with no minimum order.*

*Discount valid from 9/09/18 through 11:59PM ET on 9/11/18 at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with no minimum order for Nespresso-compatible capsules only. Offer not redeemable for cash. We have several roasts from Miscela D’Oro in capsules, and many of them are promotionally priced. Miscela D’Oro is a company that is growing, so expect to see more from them. Best of all, the discount is valid on those already-low prices too.

A new range of capsules from Caffe Trombetta, another Italian coffee brand, is now available, with great prices and also available for the discount above.

Several capsules are made with recycled and/or biodegradable material. Italian-based Caffe Vergnano makes capsules that are eco-friendly, and can be entirely composted and/or recycled.

Clooney appeared in the first ad for Nespresso back in 2006, where he overheard 2 women talking in glowing terms about Nespresso, though Clooney thinks they are talking about him. When he realizes his mistake, the long-used tag line was delivered: “Nespresso – what else?” If you ask us, we say nothing else compares to Nespresso machine coffee.
