Douwe Egberts In The Spotlight

Amsterdam-Rings-of-a-Tree-Banner-NL-E3

The Netherlands is home to Douwe Egberts, one of our most popular coffee brands. This week, we highlight some of the unusual and special homes that are must-sees!

Anne-Frank-House-Amsterdam-CRAny trip to Amsterdam should include a visit to the Anne Frank House. The house also has a museum and a gift shop, and is one of the quietest places you will ever find. The annex where the family and four others hid and lived for more than two years is preserved for visitors to get a sense of their life. Anne’s pictures of movie stars taped to her small room’s wall is preserved under glass. You can peek out the window of the top room, just as Anne would do to get away from the cramped communal space. The House opened in 1960, and continues to this day to spread knowledge, freedom and democracy.

hendrika-marie-houseboat-275pxOn the very same canal you will find the houseboat Hendrika Maria, also known as the Houseboat Museum. Since 1997, the owner has opened his home and welcomed visitors. Amsterdam canals are lined with similar houseboats. Check out the full kitchen down below, the wood-burning stove in the sitting room, and all the containers of plants soaking up the sun on the boat’s roof. Plus, getting a picture of the canal and bridges from the canal itself makes for a special photo.

rembrandt-house-museum-in-amsterdam-300px-crOne of the greatest visual artists in history, and the most important in Dutch art, is Rembrandt. A Dutch painter and printmaker, he lived in Amsterdam from his mid-twenties until his death. He is well-known for his portraits, his Biblical scenes, his etchings and his creative use of light and shadow in his work. The Rembrandt House Museum, where the artist actually lived for almost 20 years, is restored to look exactly how it did during those years. It was here that he painted the majority of his great works, stored his collection of unusual objects (stuffed animals, musical instruments, shells, coins, etc.), and taught art to students. Whether you are a fan of art or a fan of architecture, this place is worth a visit.

Douwe Egberts Note On Grinds

Scoop of Ground CoffeeThe grind size of coffee has a direct impact on the quality of the flavor of the brewed coffee. While you should always use the correct grind for the type of equipment you are using to make coffee, the good news is that Douwe Egberts in ground is a medium coarse grind. This flexible grind works in French Press, filter, and drip machines.

Coffee In The News

Beans In Space

weather-balloon-300px-E2Astronaut coffee is made from beans sourced from a small farm in Colombia that are launched on a weather balloon and sent to space. Well, more accurately, the beans traveled 30 miles up into the stratosphere. When the barista recovered the package of beans several hours later using GPS, the beans were slightly frozen and coated with water from the air pressure. Two servings of these beans cost $50, which is made and served pour-over style. The coffee is supposed to be light, soft and fruity, with notes of licorice.

It’s Time For A Coffee Klatch!

Coffee klatch comes from a German phrase that literally translates to coffee and gossip, and in Germany, it marked the time that women were allowed to visit and chat for a while at coffee houses (we are talking about the 1800’s). The Coffee Klatch is alive and well today.

This week, we are highlighting 3 of our most popular German brands: Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff. Tchibo has owned and run Eduscho and Davidoff for many years.

girlfriends-having-coffee-650px-tchibologos

Let’s start with a little news from Germany’s coffee culture.

Our first bit of news comes from Tchibo, one of our highlighted brands. Tchibo has long been roasting coffee, and in the 20th century, added retail products to the company portfolio. Launched last month, a new service named Tchibo Share allows customers to choose to rent clothing for children and pregnant moms for a month or longer. Returned clothing is professionally cleaned and then is available for rental again. Costs start at two euros ($2.45 USD) monthly. The company states that one goal of the business is to support sustainability.

freiburg-cup-300pxNext up, we head to the city of Freiburg in Germany. The city is responsible for introducing the idea of a reusable cup that can be returned to one of many shops to cut down on disposable waste. Those shops disinfect the plastic cup; the cup itself can be reused up to 400 times. It comes with a disposable lid (just like from a coffee shop), which helps cut down the amount of waste with the cup overall. The cups are available all over town at places where coffee is sold. In fact, the city has an entire web site devoted to the Freiburg Cup and how to get one.

Our last item of news refers to a very recent decision that will allow some German workers to work only 28 hours per week. Though starting in only one region of the country, where almost one million workers are affected, it should eventually impact almost 4 million people. The 28-hr week is intended to be used where there is a need to care for children and/or elderly and sick relatives, and can be chosen for up to two years. Interestingly, the deal includes having willing workers increasing their weekly hours by five and receiving a 4 percent pay raise. This flexible working time system could impact businesses across the country, including BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche.

High-end cars bring us to high-end coffee brands, but thankfully, the prices are much better. Here is our deal this week: Get 15% off your order of Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff, with no minimum required at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

Robo-Baristas Can’t Make Latte Art

robot-arm-barista

A cafe in San Francisco, and another unrelated café in Tokyo, both have robots making and delivering coffee to customers. The robot in both places is a one-armed device with a grasping device at the end. (In Tokyo, the machine has cartoon eyes displayed above the arm, but in San Francisco, no misleading occurs.) The customer orders and pays for a drink using a tablet, gets a printed ticket that the robot is able to scan, then make and deliver the drink. In California, the goal is to have more human interaction by the employees with clients while the robot makes the drink. In Tokyo, the goal is efficiency and to serve as many folks as possible.

Are Smart Mugs Necessary?

Smart mugs, that is mugs that can remind you to drink water, measure your liquid intake, and keep your beverage at the right temp for long periods, are a new digital trend. In fact, the second generation of these smart mugs is on the market now, ranging in price from $100 to more than $200. Most are able to travel too, but will need to be plugged in for charging at times. An app on your phone helps you monitor and control the mug. You can already program your coffee maker from your phone app, so it seems only logical that you would want to control your mug too, we guess. We have always been partial to white ceramic cups, or our durable double-walled cups with our logo!

Let’s Talk Douwe Egberts!

But First, This:

People in the U.S. are talking about the recent big winners of two multi-state lotteries. This month, in the Netherlands, people are talking about the Postcode Lottery, a large charity lottery, supported by a series of draws every month that can win money for the resident with that postcode (zip code). In addition, there are other drawings, such as one for the New Year, and one where an entire street can win. Fifty percent of the lottery’s revenue is donated to a variety of charities. (Read more about that below.)

Dutch-Money-650px
Postcode-Loterij-in-Eastermar-winners-300px-eThis year, the New Year’s Postcode Lottery’s big prize – almost 27 million euros ($32 million USD) – went to two homeowners with the exact postcode in the small village of Eastermar (pop: 1500 residents). Additionally, 272 residents each won fifty-five thousand euros. One of those winners is lobbying the other local winners to donate to a fund she began to benefit everyone in the village. The fund will be used to organize local activities. She hopes to get one hundred Euros from each of them, giving them a great start to the fund. Sounds like a win-win situation to us!

More About Charities That Benefit From The Postcode Lottery

Since 1989, dozens of charities (99 in 2017) have received more than 5.1 billion euros ($6 billion USD) from the Dutch Postcode Lottery. While a majority are in the Netherlands, the charities include organizations in other parts of the world, such as Britain and in the U.S. Recipient organizations must be working towards a humane and green world. These groups include UNICEF, WWF, Doctors Without Borders, African Parks Network, Greenpeace, Oxfam, Rocky Mountain Institute, among many others. Approximately 17 million people live in the Netherlands; approximately 3 million people play the lottery.

Coffee In The News

Storing Coffee Should Be Cool

coffee-container-100pxAlways store coffee, whether ground or beans, to protect from air, moisture, heat and light. Store beans in an opaque, air-tight container at room temperature. The container should be kept in a dark and cool location. This works for coffee both before and after its best-by date.

Coffee Grounds Make Biodiesel Fuel

A partnership among a petroleum company and two biodiesel firms is producing a fuel made from the extracted oils of used coffee grounds. The fuel blend is named B20, and combines the coffee ground oils, other recycled waste fats and oils, and a mineral diesel fuel. The product is 85% more carbon-efficient than standard diesel, achieving more than 10% CO2 reduction over the standard. So far, the business has produced 6,000 liters of pure coffee oil, enough to produce 30,000 liters of biofuel.

A Traditional Italian Christmas

Christmas in Italy is one big celebration from early December into January! The holidays are filled with celebrations, parades, music, food and a deep reverence for the religious aspects of the season.

In Italy, people wish each other “Buon Natale!” Christmas decorations are put up the day following the celebration of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, December 8th. Everyone displays a version of the Nativity scene, called the “Presepe.” In fact, Naples is the home to an extremely elaborate and detailed Nativity scene with more than six hundred decorations and figures. Another symbol of the season is the Poinsettia plant, displayed and sold everywhere.

Milan-Cathedral-Christmas-Banner

la-befana-300pxA unique aspect of gift-giving in Italy is the arrival of La Befana, a kindly old witch. She rides a broomstick, dressed in patched clothing, but smiling as she delivers bags of gifts for the children by way of the chimney. Good children get candy; bad children get lumps of coal.

La Befana sweeps up after herself when she leaves too. She does this the night before Epiphany, the 12th day of Christmas, in early January. A large family meal is shared on Epiphany, which officially ends the Italian holiday season.

One Last Italian Holiday Tradition

cuccia-wheat-kernals-300pxSaint Lucy’s day on December 13th celebrates light in the darkness, with the winter solstice coming. The festival is marked with fireworks or bonfires. In Naples, fires are lit at dawn along the beachfront leading to the church. In Sicily, people eat a traditional pudding made from boiled wheat kernels.

As they say in the Netherlands, ‘Vrolijk Kerstfeest’

Cheerful Christmas!

dutch-ornaments-christmas-tree-600px

dutch-horns-at-christmas-300pxIt’s that time of year, just as in other parts of Europe and beyond, when adults and children alike focus on and celebrate the Christmas holiday. There might be a Christmas hamper (box or package) from your employer, time to decorate the tree (only after St. Nicolas Day), a 4’ horn to sound at dawn, and most importantly, time spent with the people you love.

In fact, researchers found that in the Netherlands, spending time with family was identified as the most important part of the Christmas season.

Advocaat-Dutch-Eggnog-250px-eThe big day itself is actually two days in the Netherlands. The Dutch celebrate First (25th) and Second (26th) Christmas Days as time spent with family, and indulging in the holiday feast. Traditional holiday favorites include oliebollen (heavy donut), Christmas fruit bread, roasted venison or goose with plenty of vegetables, and the Dutch version of eggnog, Advocaat, actually a creamy brandy custard, often eaten with a spoon.

The Dutch find this time of year special, just as we do. Indulge in the wonder of it all with authentic Dutch coffee from Douwe Egberts. As our gift to you, we’ll take 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts products on www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

Other Dutch Traditions

Christmas Markets are popular in many European cities. Amsterdam has large markets, usually with stalls in wooden cabins, selling food, clothing and gifts. You will also find a Gebakkraam, a food truck with specialties such as appelflappen and oliebollen. One of the most popular markets is the Market at Museumplein, also known as Christmas Village on Ice, where the market stands next to a large public ice rink. Add in some live music and entertainment, and you will have a true Dutch Christmas Market experience.

One More Very Dutch Part of the Holiday

<img class=Gezelligheid is the most important part of the Christmas Season. This Dutch word is difficult to translate, but in general, it refers to the feeling of being with your loved ones, and/or reuniting with someone after a long separation, and/or a general sense of togetherness (think warm and fuzzy feelings).

Lastly, New Year’s Eve (Oud en Nieuw) in the Netherlands, people congregate in the central squares of the cities. Around 11PM, rounds of fireworks begin to welcome the coming year. At the stroke of midnight, more fireworks, more celebrations and more fun!
