“La vie est faite de petits bonheurs.”
The sentiment above translates as “Life is made of small pleasures” and this week’s newsletter on French coffee is all about the pleasures of French coffee! And, of course, we’ve included a sweet deal on all our French products!
Coffee first came to France in the 1600’s with an Ottoman ambassador to the court of King Louis XIV. The diplomat brought sacks of coffee described as a magical beverage, and mixed in small amounts of cloves, cardamom and sugar to serve. The ambassador also introduced all the accoutrements for drinking coffee: china dishes, embroidered napkins and, of course, a pot in which to create the magic.
Within a couple years, a coffee-drinking booth was opened under a tent at a festival, with Turkish waiters selling the coffee from cups on trays as they wandered through the crowd. The earliest Parisian coffee houses began to pop-up around town.
The Café de Procope opened in 1686, and the owner added coffee to the menu soon after.
This brought in many patrons, including French actors, authors and musicians. (The same café in the next century would be fundamental in the debate over the French Revolution.)
In the early 1700’s, Louis XIV received a coffee tree from the Dutch (another great coffee bastion) to install in the Royal Garden. Eventually, by the mid-1800’s, there were more than 3000 cafes in Paris. By that time, the first percolating coffee maker had been invented, and soon after a maker that used extraction pressure was introduced – and yes, it was the precursor of the espresso machine that debuted the next century.
Today, cafes in Paris and across France, offer special food and fresh-roasted coffee beans gathered from the best growers around the world.

So Many Choices, So Little Time
Carte Noire literally “black card”, was introduced almost 35 years ago by Rene Monnier, a coffee blender and roaster whose family had been producing Grand Mere for more than 10 years before that. The Monniers chose the name and black and gold packaging to reflect sophistication and elegance. Carte Noire remains today one of France’s most popular coffee brands. We have it in ground, whole beans, instant, pods, espresso and decaffeinated.
Even better, Carte Noire instant coffee is already on sale — so you’ll be getting an even better deal using the discount above!
Grand Mere started by the Monnier family 47 years ago, is named after grandmother because she “knows how to make a good coffee.” Today, the brand is one of the top coffee brands in France. We have Degustation (Tasty) and Familial (Family) roasts.
Maison Du Café is made by Douwe Egberts France, where their advertising slogan is “Each cup offers a moment of pleasure and friendship.” Ma Tradition is a combination of Robusta and Arabica coffee beans, roasted in the Douwe Egberts process, which produces a fragrant and balanced medium roast coffee. LOR Doux is soft and sweet from the Arabica coffee beans.
