Earth Day By The Numbers
Earth Day began as an idea for a national day to focus on the environment. A U.S. Senator from Wisconsin founded the day, after seeing the devastation of a massive oil spill in California the previous year. Promoting the day as a “teach in” and after reviewing college schedules to determine the best time (between Spring break and final exams), April 22 was selected. Here’s a quick tally of some key numbers relating to Earth Day.
We have almost a dozen brands that offer sustainable coffee products, and we’ve highlighted a few below. You can celebrate Earth Day by getting 10% off orders of $30 or more of any of our products.*

Sustainable Coffees: Now Grouped On Our Site
You asked to be able to see our sustainable products together, and now you can by selecting Coffee By Type, Sustainable Products to see what delicious coffees you can choose. We also have them grouped along the side by the type of sustainable certification. Here’s some we enjoy:
Lavazza Gran Selezione is Rainforest Alliance Certified, with 100% Arabica coffee beans, intense and full-bodied, with chocolate notes. The medium grind of this ground coffee makes it right for most coffee makers.
All of our illy products are certified by an organization that promotes a Responsible Supply Chain Process, a testament to the quality of illy’s supplier relationships. We have decaf, fine grind (for espresso), Moka grind for Moka pots, and whole beans. The espresso is perfect Italian style, which makes drinking illy a real treat.
UTZ Certification, at a high-level, is a program that is focused on good agricultural practices, farm management and the environmental impacts. The Certification is the largest program for sustainable farming of coffee in the world. Coffee farmers and coffee producers each have their own specifications to meet for certification. We carry a range of UTZ Certified products from Douwe Egberts, Dallmayr, Arvid Nordquist and Maison Du Cafe.
Caffe Vergnano’s Nespresso-Compatible capsules are now compostable, that’s right, the capsules are 100% biodegradable. All five roasts are delicious, convenient and earth-friendly.

Coffee In The News
Coffee Bean Tea In A Bottle
Cascara, the dried skin of a coffee bean, has long been discarded as waste in the processing of the bean. We have mentioned the use of the cascara to enhance drinks, but now, a company is bottling a tea made from the husks.
Considered a superfood, the cascara skin is all antioxidants, polyphenols (for immunity), and caffeine. The tea is in four flavors, including sweetened original. The company behind the tea makes cold brew coffees, and sees their products as minimizing waste, supporting sustainable coffee farmers, and offering additional opportunities for local farmers.
Technology Delivers Clear Coffee
Touted as the “first colorless coffee drink in the world,” the makers of the product use technology and high-quality ingredients to produce a clear caffeinated liquid that has no preservatives, artificial flavors, sugar or other sweeteners. Taste testers describe it as “drinkable” with a “cheap wine” aftertaste. The drink is only available in the United Kingdom right now, but the makers are planning to expand to the U.S.
As always, enjoy better coffee and thanks from the EnjoyBetterCoffee Team!
