Fika, Hygge and the Secret To Happiness at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com

EBC-Scandi-Banner-Coastal-View-082618Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga); Norwegian for “to give comfort, joy;” similar to a hug.

Fika (pronounced fee-ka); old Swedish term, for which there is no English equivalent, but roughly refers to making time for friends and colleagues with coffee and goodies.

It is also the name of a new coffee roast from Lofbergs, but more about that in a moment.

EBC-Scandi-FIKA-082618-E2This week, we are highlighting the range of Scandinavian coffee we offer at EnjoyBettterCoffee.com. No mention of coffee from countries such as Norway, Denmark, and Sweden would be worth its weight in beans without the mention of hygge and fika, key parts of life in the Nordic countries. We aren’t talking about a coffee break, but an extended break, twice a day, with special baked items to make it all cozy and comfortable. And, it’s the law in Sweden that companies give employees two Fikas per day. It is considered socially unacceptable for employees to skip these gatherings.

Happiness-Factor-Scandinavia-2-300px-E2These Scandinavian cultural norms, which put a premium on cozy and warm feelings as key parts of interactions with friends and co-workers, could be a big part of why the Nordic countries consistently place in the top 10 Happiest Countries, per the annual World Happiness Report. For 2018, the report deemed Finland to be the overall happiest country in the world. Following in order are Norway, Denmark, Iceland, with Sweden jumping to 9th place, up from 10 last year. You may already know that the report is based on values assigned to six variables that contribute to well-being: income; healthy life expectancy; social support; freedom; trust, and generosity. Data is pooled from Gallup World Poll surveys to calculate the happy ratings. (The U.S.A. comes in at 18th.)

Are there other reasons for this regional contentment? Frigid weather and long winters may bring communities together in support of each other. (Think of the effort behind a barn-raising where everyone helps the farmer in need.) These countries also offer social programs, affordable higher education and healthcare, and have a high GDP. A Finnish researcher speculates that Finns are quietly satisfied with life conditions, and unwilling to compare what they have against others, comparison being the “thief of joy” (according to Teddy Roosevelt).

Lofbergs-Swedish-Fika-Advert-NLLofbergs, one of the largest coffee roasters in the Nordic countries, is based in Sweden. We offer two exemplary roasts, both new to us: Lofbergs Swedish Fika Medium Roast Ground Coffee and Lofbergs Swedish Fika Dark Roast Ground Coffee. Fika Medium Roast is a light roast (3 of 5) of Arabica beans with a balanced taste and aroma. Fika Dark Roast is rated 4 of 5, made of 100% Arabica beans, including about 1/3 of beans certified by the Rainforest Alliance (an international sustainability organization we have written about here before). These two special roasts alone make this deal special!

Arvid-Advert-NLArvid Nordquist opened a small shop in Stockholm, Sweden in 1884. Today the Arvid Nordquist brand is a leader in premium coffee, food and wine products. We offer three roasts: Medium roast, Extra Dark roast, and Classic Gran Dia, all prime examples of Swedish coffee roasting. In addition, all three are UTZ Certified and CO2 Compensated (read more about these organizations on the product page). The Medium roast is balanced, with chocolate and spice notes. Extra Dark is full-bodied, and intense, with just the right amount of bitterness. Classic Gran Dia is a medium to dark roast, full-bodied, with nut and floral notes, and a nice finish.

Paulig-Advert-wDKRoast-NL-EOur last Nordic brand is Paulig, from Finland, who roasts and packages their coffee out of their facilities in Helsinki. We offer three roasts. Juhla Mokka ground coffee is light-roasted, rich, balanced and intense blend of beans from South America and Africa. Presidentti ground coffee is a light roast (1 of 5) from a blend of beans grown in Africa, and delivers a strong and rich coffee. Juhla Mokka Dark Roast ground coffee is a medium roast coffee with chocolate and baked pastry notes. This coffee works with most preparation methods, including drip, French press and moka pot. All three of these coffees are perfect examples of Finnish coffee and well worth a try.

We get it directly from the region, for the Nordic market, so you are getting the real deal, just as a native would buy.

Coffee In The News

Queen of Specialty Coffee Passes at 96

Erna-KnutsenIt shouldn’t be surprising that a central figure in coffee history, a legend in the coffee industry, and the person credited with originating the term “specialty coffee,” was from Norway. Erna Knutsen died in June, just short of her 97th birthday. Knutsen emigrated to the United Sates in 1927, a couple years after her father arrived alone to work in the shipyards while saving to send for his family. Erna, her mom and two sisters would move to New York, where her parents eventually had four more children.

Erna went on to work as a secretary for a Wall Street firm. Eventually, she joined a coffee, tea and spice trading house in San Francisco. There, she was one of the first women ever to sell green coffee. Legend has it that during the 1970’s, she was able to convince an Indonesian man who was driving to New York city with very special coffee beans to open, roast and cup (taste) the coffee. Ten years on, she bought her own trading house and renamed it Knutsen Coffees, Ltd. (She would later recount that being disallowed from the cupping room because she was a woman actually made buying the company all the sweeter, especially when she fired the men who excluded her.)

Italian Iced Coffee Two Ways

Affogato-2018
You’ll find Caffe Freddo in most coffee bars in Italy. Straight espresso is stored in a freezer and served as a coffee slush. Or try espresso over a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream and you have an Affogato, perfect for dessert. We have a wide range of Italian espresso, including Bristot, Caffe Vergnano, Illy and Lavazza; you bring the ice cream.

Germans Know Eiskaffee

Eiskaffee means “ice-cream coffee” and this recipe delivers a creamy iced coffee in no time at all. Use one of our great German brands. Tchibo Instant coffee and Jacobs Instant coffee are two of the most popular brands on our site and in Germany. Tchibo and Jacobs also make full-flavored ground and whole bean coffee if you prefer.

Eiskaffee-2018Ingredients:

  • 1 quart strong instant or fresh-brewed coffee
  • 2 scoops of ice cream (per drink)
  • Whipped cream
  • Grated sweet chocolate to garnish

Directions:

  1. Make the coffee. Allow to cool to room temperature, then chill in fridge.
  2. Into a tall glass, place 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream.
  3. Pour the cooled coffee into the tall glass, leaving a little room below the rim.
  4. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate. Enjoy.

In Greece, It’s Frappé

When the Summer Olympics was last held in Athens, Frappé was a huge hit among the tourists. Nescafe instant coffee is the recommended instant in Greece because it gets foamy. You’ll need a blender or cocktail shaker.

FrappeIngredients:

  • 1 ½ – 3 teaspoons instant coffee
  • 2/3 cup cold water
  • Sugar, Milk and ice cubes (optional)

Directions:

  1. Add coffee, sugar and a splash of water to a cocktail shaker or blender. Shake or blend until the mixture forms a thick and frothy foam.
  2. Pour the foam into a tall glass, then stir in the remaining water, sugar, milk and ice if using. Enjoy with a straw.

NOTE: Variations on this drink include versions without sugar, medium sweetened, very sweet and without milk.

Iced Coffee Add-Ins Can Spice It Up:

ESPRESSO-DRINK-W-TONIC-200px* Try a strip of lemon peel, twisted over the glass, then rubbed on the rim of the iced coffee. Very refreshing!

* Pour a shot of espresso over a glass of tonic water and ice. Bitter and sweet.

* Mix 1 cup of milky tea and 1 cup of strong coffee, then serve over ice. Creamy and smooth.

As the Viking comedian said: I just rowed in from Norway and boy, are my arms Thor!

Scandi-viking-ship-banner

If you haven’t already guessed, we are highlighting Scandinavian coffee this week. We have found that some people don’t always understand the differences between Nordic and Scandinavian, so let’s start there.

Scandinavia usually means 3 main countries: Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Finland is sometimes included in that list but is not technically Scandinavian. Refer to the countries as Nordic, and you can add Finland and Iceland to the group.

EBC-Scandinavian-Cliches-Crop
A common stereotype is that Scandinavians are blue-eye blonds. While it is true that the percentage of blondes is a bit higher, it’s a long way from being a majority. Another false idea about this region is that everyone’s house is full of IKEA furniture, as it is a Swedish-based company. There are more than 20 IKEA stores in Sweden, nine in Norway and five in Denmark. It is possible that because homes are small there, and IKEA furniture is functional, with clever storage options, you may find some in Scandinavian homes.

But there is one thing that really sets the region apart from any other area of the world: Coffee drinking. These countries drink more coffee than anywhere else in the world, even Italy and France. The Nordic people like strong, delicious filter coffee. And, they drink it all day long. We know they love coffee, they know how to roast coffee and they know how to drink coffee.

We have 3 Nordic coffee brands that will light up your taste buds: Paulig, Lofbergs Lila, and Arvid Nordquist. We will give you 15% off these iconic brands with no minimum order at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

Please use coupon code: NORDIC15

*Discount valid from 6/3/2018 through 11:59PM ET on 6/5/2018 at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with 15% off no minimum order required on Arvid Nordquist, Lofbergs Lila and Paulig coffees. Can’t Decide? Read On…

Use our roast reviews to help you decide among these always-enjoyable brews.

Paulig-Advert-wDKRoast-NL-EPaulig, from Finland, roasts and packages coffee out of their facilities in Helsinki. We offer three roasts. Juhla Mokka Ground Coffee is light-roasted, rich, balanced from an intense blend of beans from South America and Africa. Presidentti Ground Coffee is a light roast (1 out of 5) from a blend of beans grown in Africa, and delivers a strong and rich coffee. Juhla Mokka Dark is a medium/dark roast with chocolate and toasted notes. These coffees are perfect examples of Finnish coffee.

Lofbergs-Advert-NLLofbergs Lila, one of the largest coffee roasters in the region, is based in Sweden. We offer three exemplary roasts: Lofbergs Lila Medium Roast is a light roast (2 out of 5) from Arabica beans, with a rich taste and aroma. Jubilee is light roasted (3 of 5) 100% Arabica beans, including beans certified by the Rainforest Alliance (an international sustainability organization we have written about before). Kharisma is dark, intense, and nutty with subtle fruit notes (4 of 5).

Arvid-Advert-NLArvid Nordquist opened a small shop in Stockholm, Sweden in 1884. Today Arvid Nordquist is a leader in premium coffee, food and wine products. We offer two roasts: Medium roast and Extra Dark roast, both prime examples of Swedish coffee roasting. In addition, they are UTZ Certified and CO2 Compensated (you can read more about these organizations on the product page). The Medium roast is balanced, with chocolate and spice notes. Extra Dark is full-bodied, and intense, with just the right amount of bitterness.

Try one, two or even more to experience the best in Nordic regional coffee. We get it directly from the area, so you are getting the real deal, just as a native would drink. As they say in Nordic country: “Je er glad i kaffe” which means “I love coffee!” The discount above will help you save.

Coffee In The News

Coffee Makes You Social

Coffee-work-tasksA new study found that people who drank a moderate amount of caffeine before a group activity were not only more alert, but better at tasks in the group. Those who had coffee before participating in an activity saw themselves and the others as more productive and more active. The study attributed the positivity of oneself and others to heightened alertness and improved performance (not a perception of improvements, but actual improvements). So, if you find yourself not liking someone you have to work with, try downing some coffee before the interaction.
