Sustainable Coffee at Enjoy Better Coffee

Earth Day By The Numbers

Earth Day began as an idea for a national day to focus on the environment. A U.S. Senator from Wisconsin founded the day, after seeing the devastation of a massive oil spill in California the previous year. Promoting the day as a “teach in” and after reviewing college schedules to determine the best time (between Spring break and final exams), April 22 was selected. Here’s a quick tally of some key numbers relating to Earth Day.

Sustainable Coffees: Now Grouped On Our Site

EBC-Sustainable-Coffee
You asked to be able to see our sustainable products together, and now you can by selecting Coffee By Type, Sustainable Products to see what delicious coffees you can choose. We also have them grouped along the side by the type of sustainable certification. Here’s some we enjoy:

Lavazza Gran Selezione is Rainforest Alliance Certified, with 100% Arabica coffee beans, intense and full-bodied, with chocolate notes. The medium grind of this ground coffee makes it right for most coffee makers.

All of our illy products are certified by an organization that promotes a Responsible Supply Chain Process, a testament to the quality of illy’s supplier relationships. We have decaf, fine grind (for espresso), Moka grind for Moka pots, and whole beans. The espresso is perfect Italian style, which makes drinking illy a real treat.

UTZ Certification, at a high-level, is a program that is focused on good agricultural practices, farm management and the environmental impacts. The Certification is the largest program for sustainable farming of coffee in the world. Coffee farmers and coffee producers each have their own specifications to meet for certification. We carry a range of UTZ Certified products from Douwe Egberts, Dallmayr, Arvid Nordquist and Maison Du Cafe.

Caffe Vergnano’s Nespresso-Compatible capsules are now compostable, that’s right, the capsules are 100% biodegradable. All five roasts are delicious, convenient and earth-friendly.

Coffee Bean Tea In A Bottle

cascara-tea-200pxCascara, the dried skin of a coffee bean, has long been discarded as waste in the processing of the bean. We have mentioned the use of the cascara to enhance drinks, but now, a company is bottling a tea made from the husks.

Considered a superfood, the cascara skin is all antioxidants, polyphenols (for immunity), and caffeine. The tea is in four flavors, including sweetened original. The company behind the tea makes cold brew coffees, and sees their products as minimizing waste, supporting sustainable coffee farmers, and offering additional opportunities for local farmers.

Technology Delivers Clear Coffee

Touted as the “first colorless coffee drink in the world,” the makers of the product use technology and high-quality ingredients to produce a clear caffeinated liquid that has no preservatives, artificial flavors, sugar or other sweeteners. Taste testers describe it as “drinkable” with a “cheap wine” aftertaste. The drink is only available in the United Kingdom right now, but the makers are planning to expand to the U.S.

Four Coffee Trends For 2018 (And A Sale!)

Just a couple of weeks ago, we wrote about current food trends in general, and one of the top five is cold brew coffee. This week, we focus on the coffee-specific trends this year.

First, let’s talk coffee shakes. While some of us like the acid and bitter flavors of black coffee, not everyone does. Some, especially younger drinkers, prefer sweet, creamy coffee drinks. Blend coffee with milk, vanilla, sugar, ice, and flavored syrup to enjoy this decadent treat.

Next up: Ready to drink coffee, such as bottles and cans of frappuccinos, or cold brews that are easy and convenient to carry and drink. Many are already sweetened, so it’s another type of sugary treat.

Our third trend is about appearance over function. Café au Lait bowls, that is coffee with milk served in and drunk from small bowls, often decorated with unique and artistic designs.

Our last trend this week is a favorite of ours, gourmet coffee. This term refers to higher-quality coffee, perhaps single origin beans or carefully selected blends from all over the coffee-growing world. Think artisan, special roasts, organic, and beans grown in special regions (for example, high in the mountains, or on the slopes of a volcano).

At Enjoy Better Coffee, we have the best of the best of European coffees. We have coffee from Germany, France, Holland, Italy, Austria, and the Nordic countries. Here is a small sample of the special coffees we have:

Coffee roasted over wood from Italian producer Sant Eustachio

Beans grown at the foot of Kilimanjaro are used for German Dallmayr Kilimanjaro, a balanced coffee with floral notes

Beans selected especially because of their unique qualities as in Eilles Kaffee Gourmet coffee

Beans selected and roasted to create a mild coffee as with Italy’s Segafredo Espresso Mild, German Tchibo Feine Milde, Swiss-based Davidoff Café Fine Aroma, and Austria’s Mozart Kaffee Mild, to name a few

Don’t wait…Get in on the gourmet coffee at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com and for the next few days, we’ll give you 10% off your order of $30 or more.*

Coffee In The News

Secrets Of A Long Life (Hint: It Includes Coffee!)

According to a new study, drinking coffee and beer every day leads to a decreased likelihood of premature death. Researchers from the University of California, Irvine, were looking for common elements in the lives of those over the age of 90. The team spent the past 15 years surveying more than 14,000 people in their 90’s about diet, activities, medical history, and medications, then followed up every six months to perform neurological tests. They found that two daily cups of coffee and beer, along with exercise and hobbies, led to a longer life. If your hobbies are drinking coffee and beer, it has to be even better, right?

Wake Up and Smell The Makeup

Coffee-MakeupA cosmetic company has created lipsticks, eyeshadows and bronzers, all with a delicious coffee scent. We are told the aroma of the makeup is subtle, much like you might experience walking past a hot cup of coffee. Apparently, the team behind the cosmetics is comprised of coffee lovers, so they were compelled to release this new line. The palette is only neutral tones, while the bronzers come in two shades: Latte and Mocha.

It’s Time For A Coffee Klatch!

Coffee klatch comes from a German phrase that literally translates to coffee and gossip, and in Germany, it marked the time that women were allowed to visit and chat for a while at coffee houses (we are talking about the 1800’s). The Coffee Klatch is alive and well today.

This week, we are highlighting 3 of our most popular German brands: Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff. Tchibo has owned and run Eduscho and Davidoff for many years.

girlfriends-having-coffee-650px-tchibologos

Let’s start with a little news from Germany’s coffee culture.

Our first bit of news comes from Tchibo, one of our highlighted brands. Tchibo has long been roasting coffee, and in the 20th century, added retail products to the company portfolio. Launched last month, a new service named Tchibo Share allows customers to choose to rent clothing for children and pregnant moms for a month or longer. Returned clothing is professionally cleaned and then is available for rental again. Costs start at two euros ($2.45 USD) monthly. The company states that one goal of the business is to support sustainability.

freiburg-cup-300pxNext up, we head to the city of Freiburg in Germany. The city is responsible for introducing the idea of a reusable cup that can be returned to one of many shops to cut down on disposable waste. Those shops disinfect the plastic cup; the cup itself can be reused up to 400 times. It comes with a disposable lid (just like from a coffee shop), which helps cut down the amount of waste with the cup overall. The cups are available all over town at places where coffee is sold. In fact, the city has an entire web site devoted to the Freiburg Cup and how to get one.

Our last item of news refers to a very recent decision that will allow some German workers to work only 28 hours per week. Though starting in only one region of the country, where almost one million workers are affected, it should eventually impact almost 4 million people. The 28-hr week is intended to be used where there is a need to care for children and/or elderly and sick relatives, and can be chosen for up to two years. Interestingly, the deal includes having willing workers increasing their weekly hours by five and receiving a 4 percent pay raise. This flexible working time system could impact businesses across the country, including BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche.

High-end cars bring us to high-end coffee brands, but thankfully, the prices are much better. Here is our deal this week: Get 15% off your order of Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff, with no minimum required at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

Please use coupon code: 15TCHIBO

*Discount valid from 2/11/18 through 11:59PM ET 2/13/18 at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with no minimum order of Tchibo, Davidoff and Eduscho. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products.

Robo-Baristas Can’t Make Latte Art

robot-arm-barista

A cafe in San Francisco, and another unrelated café in Tokyo, both have robots making and delivering coffee to customers. The robot in both places is a one-armed device with a grasping device at the end. (In Tokyo, the machine has cartoon eyes displayed above the arm, but in San Francisco, no misleading occurs.) The customer orders and pays for a drink using a tablet, gets a printed ticket that the robot is able to scan, then make and deliver the drink. In California, the goal is to have more human interaction by the employees with clients while the robot makes the drink. In Tokyo, the goal is efficiency and to serve as many folks as possible.

Are Smart Mugs Necessary?

Smart mugs, that is mugs that can remind you to drink water, measure your liquid intake, and keep your beverage at the right temp for long periods, are a new digital trend. In fact, the second generation of these smart mugs is on the market now, ranging in price from $100 to more than $200. Most are able to travel too, but will need to be plugged in for charging at times. An app on your phone helps you monitor and control the mug. You can already program your coffee maker from your phone app, so it seems only logical that you would want to control your mug too, we guess. We have always been partial to white ceramic cups, or our durable double-walled cups with our logo!

Cool Beans Help To Relax

A spa based in a Chicago hotel is now offering this refreshing start to the day.

coffee-scrub-300pxThe three-part package delivers an espresso body scrub, a full-body massage, and a shot of espresso. It’s gonna be a good day!

The scrub is a mixture of espresso beans, honey and essential oils, so you can enjoy the great aroma of coffee while exfoliating the skin. The aesthetician will then use a warm towel to remove the mixture, leaving your pores open and ready for the massage. The Swedish-style massage is relaxing and calming, but even better, as it comes to an end, and you must prepare to enter the real world, you get to enjoy a shot of espresso. Now, you’re ready to start the day. This little treat for yourself will run you $210 and up, before tip.

We offer many brands of espresso, drip coffee, pods and capsules of delicious, European coffee, and you can make your own scrub, and your own espresso shot, for a lot less than going to Chicago. In fact, we want you to love our coffee as much as we do, so we are giving you 10% off your order of $30 or more at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

Please Use Coupon Code: COFFEE10

*Discount valid from 2/04/18 through 11:59PM ET on 2/06/18 at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with 10% off $30 minimum order. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products.

European Coffee Specialties

Austria: In a lovely Viennese café, the drink to order is a Wiener Melange. It’s espresso with steamed milk and light foam, and is delicious with any torte you might try.

France: In Paris, try the Café Crème, an espresso drink with a lot of steamed milk, so it is most like a cappuccino, something the French don’t usually order.

Ireland: Of course it has to be Irish coffee! Hot coffee, Irish whiskey, brown sugar and whipped cream make this a cold-weather treat. If you like this drink, you can get a rum version, but you’ll have to visit northern Germany.

European-coffee-examples-nl-edit

Italy: Espresso is the standard coffee drink, but you should only drink it with milk in the morning there. (Italians believe that milk affects the digestive system when drunk after morning.) Italians like a sweet pastry with their espresso, stuffed with custard, marmalade, or Nutella.

Sweden and Finland: Fika (mid-morning and late-afternoon coffee breaks), always better with friends, means a coffee with a bun or roll. Try a cardamom-style kardemummabullar or a heavily-iced cinnamon roll known as a kanelbulle.

Enjoy Better Coffee has coffee brands from all these countries. We think you should go European style, and the discount above makes it even easier to enjoy a “European holiday.”

Cold Brew In Top 5 Popular Foods for 2017

Cold brew coffee and its popularity have increased rapidly since 2016, per Google Trends’ Beverage report. Want to try a fancy barista-style cold brew? Simply start with high-quality beans (we have plenty from which to choose). Grind the beans semi-coarse. Stir ¾ cup grounds with 4 cups of water, and put in the fridge for 6-24 hours. Strain in a sieve lined with a coffee filter. To make a cup, use one-part concentrate with 2 parts water, or to taste. Enjoy! Btw, the other top items in the food category for 2017: Zoodles (zucchini noodles); ketogenic foods (based on a newer popular diet); riced veggies (think cauliflower, sweet potato and broccoli); and poke bowls (a deconstructed sushi roll in a bowl, with rice or noodles, vegetables, and sauce).

Forget Butter; There’s Egg In My Capp

K-Cappuccino-w-Egg-Yolk-200pxThis trend, from South Korea, involves straining out the egg white, then dropping the yolk in a cup of espresso and whisked. Top with heavy cream, cocoa powder and serve! Someone described it as drinking espresso “Rocky” style. Apparently the heat from the coffee kills the bacteria from the raw egg.
