We talk a lot about coffee – here at the office, in our newsletters, on our Facebook page, at home…

This week, we want to focus on 4 delicious brands that we know you will want to try (or stock up!). But first, a quick reminder about how to talk coffee. There are four key elements when we discuss a coffee:

Aroma: Not only is this the smell, but taste is also a big part of this element.

Flavor: When we talk about the flavor profile, we are talking about the flavor compounds. Think of it similar to wine-tasting, though wine has only 200 flavor compounds, while coffee has 800! (So much to explore; so little time!)

Body: This is known as “mouth feel” – how does the consistency feel in your mouth? (Think of the consistency difference between fat-free milk and whole milk.)

Finish: How does it taste after you drink it? Does it have a flavor? Is it different from the taste when you were drinking it?

Even better, you are going to get a whopping 20% off your order of these coffees with no minimum order at www.enjoybettercoffee.com.*

With these in mind, let’s get pouring over some of JJ Darboven’s premium coffees.

Our first tasting is IDEE Kaffee. Imported from Germany, this coffee is very gentle for sensitive stomachs. The green coffee beans are steamed prior to roasting to achieve a clean flavor – just the beans and the magic that occurs from roasting. IDEE Kaffee ground coffee, in 17.6oz packs, tastes smooth, with a mellow flavor profile, with a light body and a smooth finish. The aroma is fresh and will immediately transport you to a European sidewalk café. We also have IDEE Kaffee Gold Express instant coffee has all the same flavors, just as delicious and even more convenient, as ground.

Next up: Eilles Kaffee, also imported from Germany, was once a supplier of coffee to the Royal Bavarian court. Try Eilles Kaffee Arabica ground coffee for its mild aroma with flavors of citrus. It is full-bodied and a nice, slightly sharp finish. We also have Eilles Kaffee Gourmet coffee in ground and whole beans, with a full-bodied taste and flavor, with a strong and aromatic scent. The finish has hints of toast. We also have Eilles Gourmet in instant, with the same flavor profiles, aroma and finish.

Try Movenpick, from Switzerland. The high-quality beans are roasted to achieve a perfectly balanced coffee, medium bodied, with a mild finish. We have Der Himmlische made with 100% Arabica beans in ground, whole beans and instant. We also have Movenpick Espresso whole beans, which is a rich and strong coffee, perfect alone as espresso and in cappuccinos and lattes.

Our last offering from JJ Darboven is Mozart Kaffee, named after the great composer, because Mozart Kaffee is a well-balanced composition. Mozart Mild ground coffee is light and delicate in flavor, body and finish. Mozart Intensive is a strong, intense coffee, full-bodied with a smooth feel and a surprising finish. Mozart Intensive is available in ground and instant coffee.

When we talk about German coffee, brands that immediately come to mind are Dallmayr, Jacobs, Tchibo, Eduscho, Davidoff and our newest brands from German coffee producer J.J. Darboven, Eilles Kaffee and IDEE Kaffee.

More than half of these brands are based in Hamburg, the second-largest city in Germany. Hamburg is a major global trading port, located on the Elbe River, in the northern part of Germany. The city is also a popular tourist destination, with major European education and research industries, cultural and artistic venues. And, let’s not forget the Beatles were greatly influenced by, and even performed the early years in, Hamburg’s music scene.

Hamburg has been a coffee capital ever since the first coffee house opened in 1677. By the turn of the 20th century, Hamburg was the largest coffee market in the world. Today, literally tonnes of coffee move through the historic warehouse district. The red brick buildings are situated on the water’s edge, making loading and unloading simple and swift.

This week we give you another chapter in our occasional series on Great European Coffee Cities. Enjoy!

When we talk about German coffee, brands that immediately come to mind are Dallmayr, Jacobs, Tchibo, Eduscho, Davidoff and our newest brands from German coffee producer J.J. Darboven, Eilles Kaffee and IDEE Kaffee.

More than half of these brands are based in Hamburg, Germany, a global trading port on the Elbe River, located about 70 miles from the North Sea. Hamburg has been a coffee capital ever since the first coffee house opened in 1677. By the turn of the 20th century, Hamburg was the largest coffee market in the world. Take a canal boat ride through the warehouse district to view the bridges between the buildings, learn about the history of the massive buildings and the multitudes of goods stored within, right on the water. At the city’s port district, the streets are lined with coffee shops where snacks and hot coffee are served with beautiful views over the water as you watch the cargo ships come and go. Also near the town center is a lake with boats afloat and cafes surrounding the water’s edge.

Drive an hour southwest on Autobahn 1 and stop in Bremen, another great coffee city in Germany, and where two of these German brands are based. Bremen is a major port on the Weser River. (The North Sea is less than 40 miles north of the city.) Many companies are based in this thriving metropolis, from automobiles, the largest industry, to food and beverage, second largest, to aerospace and shipping engineering, wind power and communications. The Market Square, with the Town Hall’s impressive Renaissance architecture on one side and famous historical and fictional characters connected to Bremen depicted in statues, draws tourists year-round.

You deserve to enjoy the taste of German coffee, so we are giving you 10% off your order of these brands with no minimum purchase required at www.enjoybettercoffee.com.*

What do Germany, Switzerland and Austria have in common? Well, probably a few things, but nothing more important than our new coffee lines! Introducing four new brands that each have something special to offer you. But first, let’s talk about the international company that brings them to us.

Johann J. Darboven founded a company in 1866 in Hamburg, Germany. An innovator, he pioneered delivering roasted coffee in bags to his customers. Within a few years, he was awarded a medal for his 100+ varieties of coffee at an international horticultural exhibition. A generation later, his sons successfully marketed a coffee under the brand name IDEE (Idea). IDEE was (and still is) produced with a special refining process developed by the Hygienic Institute in Hamburg. The beans are treated to reduce irritants and bitter flavors while preserving the taste, and the caffeine of the coffee. The coffee was (and still is) extremely popular in Germany, and is J.J.Darboven’s flagship product. The 1930’s found the company expanding into catering, later into other countries and during the 60’s, television, with one of the earliest coffee commercials shown. During the last few decades, J.J.Darboven has grown to include the brands described below. The company is still run by a fourth generation Darboven.

We know you will like these coffees, so we are offering 10% off your order of these brands, no minimum required at www.enjoybettercoffee.com.*

2017_eilles-kaffee-logoOur first new range is Eilles Kaffee, from Germany. Their slogan is “Enjoy the good things in life.” A distinctive and special blend of beans, Eilles Kaffee uses highland beans, which assures a high-quality coffee. For more than 130 years, Eilles Kaffee has been the preferred brand in Germany. In fact, Bavarian King Ludwig II served only Eilles coffee at court during his reign in the later 1800s. We have Eilles Kaffee Gourmet in ground, whole beans and instant, and Eilles Kaffee Arabica in ground. The beautiful blue and gold packaging evokes the royal court; the aroma and flavor are unforgettable.

Also from Germany is IDEE Kaffee, a wonderfully mild classic coffee. The roasting process IDEE uses eliminates any undesirable elements with the beans prior to roasting, reducing bitter flavors that may result from regular roasting. This leaves a mild tasting coffee, with higher caffeine content, which is easier on the stomach. We have IDEE Kaffee in ground and Gold Express Instant coffee. Both are balanced and aromatic coffees.

2017_movenpick-logo
Introducing Movenpick from Switzerland, this coffee is roasted gently and carefully following an original Swiss recipe. Der Himmlische coffee comes in ground and whole bean, taking high-altitude beans from around the world, giving the coffee a wonderful aroma and distinctive taste. We also have Movenpick Espresso in whole beans, which has a rich and strong taste and aroma.2017_mozart-kaffee-logo

Finally, we have a coffee from Austria named after its most famous son, Mozart. Mozart Kaffee is a symphony of flavors, notes and aroma. Well-balanced, delicious and irresistible, this coffee brand produces. We have a Mild ground coffee that is light and Intensive ground and instant, with a powerful aroma and taste.
