Ever feel the urge to splash out on a collection of delicious drinks? Give into the temptation! At EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we have an extensive collection of Douwe Egberts coffees. Even better, this week we have a great deal at 15% off all our Douwe Egberts stock, so you can splash out economically! More on that below, but first, let’s talk about a unique display happening in the Netherlands.

The Dutch are connoisseurs of good drinks of all kinds. In fact, recently, a group of Dutch investors bought the world’s largest collection of rare whiskies, with some of the collection from as far back as 1843. The twelve collectors invested the equivalent of $11.5 million a few years ago, then had special reinforced glass cabinets built to display the 3100 bottles. One key condition of the sale was that the collection be displayed in a museum. Currently the whiskies can be seen, but not touched, in Sassenheim, in the western Netherlands.

Douwe Egberts is made in the Netherlands, and is the most popular coffee in the country, and in other parts of Europe too. EnjoyBetterCoffee.com offers a range of Douwe Egberts. Our Douwe Egberts coffees, like all our coffees, are made in Europe for the European market. We’ll give you 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts’ products on our site, with no minimum purchase required.*

Did You Know…?

de-instant-coffees-advert-nlEuromonitor, an international market research company, found that nearly half of all coffee consumed worldwide is instant. We found that a new wave of instant coffee options has been making their way onto the consumer market. The companies involved describe their coffee as premium instant coffee, one selling four single-serve packets for $13. Well, we say those companies are behind the curve! Douwe Egberts has been making instant coffees that taste and smell like brewed coffee, but ready in an instant, and at a much better price than $3+ per cup. We offer the following instant roasts:

Douwe Egberts Aroma Rood instant is the flagship roast. We have Aroma Rood instant in 7oz/200mg jars, resealable and reusable, with a seal that preserves the smooth and rich flavors and aroma notes.

Douwe Egberts Pure Gold instant, also in the resealable jar, is a medium, balanced roast, and is the standard for all instant coffees. We also have Pure Gold instant in 10- and 20-stick sample packs, making it easy to give it a try, and please use the discount above.

Douwe Egberts Pure Indulgence instant is dark and rich, with a velvety body. And, yes, it comes in a resealable jar.

Last, but certainly not least, is Douwe Egberts Moccona Classic Decaf instant. A blend of Robusta and Arabica beans, the coffee is full, well-rounded and smooth tasting. The rich aroma will make you forget there is no caffeine! This roast is available in a smaller, resealable jar.

Ban on Phones While Biking Proposed

phone-ban-nlBikes account for more than 25 percent of personal transport in the Netherlands. At the end of last month, a minister in the government drafted legislation to ban the use of phones and other mobile electronic devices on bicycles. It is already illegal to use a phone while driving a motor vehicle, but bikes were deliberately excluded from that law, despite the widespread use of bikes, because bikes are slower, and authorities thought it would be difficult to enforce such a ban. One study in The Hague found that 20 percent of bicyclists were using a phone, while more recently, the transport ministry found that devices played a role in 20 percent of biking accidents with riders under 25 years of age.

Order from any, some or all of these premium brands, and we’ll give you 15% off your order: Bristot, Caffè Trombetta, Caffè Vergnano, Hausbrandt, Miscela D’Oro, Pellini and Sant Eustachio.

Please use coupon code: WELOVEIT

*Discount valid from 10/7/18 through 11:59PM ET on 10/9/18 at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with no minimum order required for the following brands only: Bristot, Caffè Trombetta, Caffè Vergnano, Hausbrandt, Miscela D’Oro, Pellini and Sant Eustachio. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products. Questions? Call us at 800.582.6617 Mon-Fri 9AM-5PM ET.

Here’s a bit about each company and some of their best roasts.

Caffe-Trombetta-icon-nl-Crop-rectangleWhen Vittorio Trombetta began roasting and selling coffee in 1890, he chose to open his shop very near the main terminal of the train station in Rome. He wanted his shop to be a place for travelers, giving them a chance to experience coffee in the true Italian tradition. Word quickly spread that this shop served premium quality coffee and the shop soon filled with travelers and locals. Over the next 60 years, the company grew and gained its reputation as a producer of quality coffee, particularly espresso. Vittorio promoted his coffee using vacuum packaging, one of the first coffee companies to do so. We have ground roasts from Classico, to Gusto Forte and Gusto Pieno. We also have Caffè Trombetta Gold Bar whole beans, which makes a soft, gentle espresso with a strong aroma. We also have 3 roasts in Nespresso-compatible capsules, including a decaffeinated version.

bristot-nl-iconAt the turn of the 20th century, Domenico Bristot was living in Vienna and hanging out with a local coffee roaster, leading to a fascination with the art of blending, roasting and drinking coffee. When he returned to Italy after the Great War, he opened his own small coffee roasting business, using the new and unusual techniques he learned in Austria. He created a coffee that had an intense aroma with sweet and fruity notes, very unlike the coffee of the day. Bristot continued to search for the beans and roasting styles that would result in the perfect espresso. One hundred years later, Bristot still produces espresso and other premium blends using their high standards, cutting-edge technology, and innovation. We have a range of Bristot coffees, including whole bean and Nespresso-compatible capsules. Try Bristot Speciale Whole Beans for real Italian espresso, including intense flavor, with notes of citrus and chocolate finish. Bristot Classico is just that: a classic espresso blend of beans, rich and complex.

CAFFE-VERGNANO-nl-iconDomenico Vergnano opened a grocery store in the foothills surrounding Turin more than 130 years ago. Today, Caffè Vergnano is one of the top Italian coffee companies, exporting coffee to more than 80 countries. In addition to their meticulous approach to coffee selection, Caffè Vergnano also slow roasts the bean for no more than 22 minutes, then inspects for quality. Try Caffè Vergnano drip coffee with 100% Arabica beans. We have regular and decaffeinated in whole beans. We have Caffè Vergnano espresso fine grind, espresso medium grind, decaf fine grind, plus 5 roasts in whole bean, six roasts in capsules, including Decaf, for the Nespresso machine, now in compostable capsules.

Hausbrandt-nl-iconAlthough the founder of Hausbrandt was Austrian, he opened his coffee-roasting business in Trieste, Italy. Hermann Hausbrandt is known for innovation with transport and coffee storage. Hausbrandt also introduced the invention and use of the electric roaster and was one of the first to sell coffee in sealed metal containers. We have a wide selection of Hausbrandt whole bean, ground coffee, including two types of decaffeinated coffee. Try Hausbrandt Gourmet ground coffee, with spicy and citrus flavors from the delicately roasted 100% Arabica beans. Venezia Espresso in whole beans delivers a full, sweet and toasty flavor and aroma. We have Hausbrandt gift tins with beautiful artwork and special coffee blends at a super value.

misceladoro-nl-iconMiscela D’Oro is committed to sourcing the best raw coffee beans, creating blends that are then carefully and specially roasted. The technique, blending the green beans before roasting, though non-traditional, creates a full-bodied espresso with a rich, thick crema. We have a range of Miscela D’Oro espresso in ground, whole beans, and Nespresso-compatible capsules. Try whole bean or ground Espresso, in tins, at a size and price worth trying. We also have two of their organic coffees in whole bean and in capsules.

Pellini-nl-iconPellini, a family business that originally produced medicinal herbs, moved to roasting coffee in 1947 in Verona. Today, Pellini is known for high-quality, gourmet, Italian espresso. Quality is the utmost priority for Pellini, from their quality control to a tasters’ panel to achieving Kosher certification, Pellini offers some of the best Italian coffee you will ever taste. Pellini Top is their crown jewel, a special coffee made with 100% Arabica beans specially roasted to deliver a smooth, full-bodied espresso, which we have in ground and Decaffeinated ground as well. We also have 4 types of Nespresso-compatible capsules, including BIO Organic, 100% Arabica beans. BIO is also available in ground, packaged in a resealable tin.

sant-eustachio-nl-iconSant Eustachio is known for its wood roasting of coffee beans. Based in the heart of Rome, just a few steps from the Pantheon, Sant Eustachio slowly roasts beans over slightly smoky wood in the back of the shop, then air-cools the beans. This roasting technique creates a mild coffee with a fragrant aroma. In addition to espresso, Sant Eustachio offers Moka, and Filtro coffee blends for a flavorful cup. We have options in ground and whole bean, plus Nespresso-compatible capsules in 2 package sizes.

Tiramisu Guild Rejects “Creative” Tiramisu

Creative-TiramisuThe Tiramisu World Cup, being held for only the second time in history, will award two winners this year. One award will go to the best “classic” recipe and the other to the best “creative” recipe. That creativity means adding a twist, like chilies, wasabi, beer, though organizers don’t want the recipe distorted. The Tiramisu Guild, a separate local entity that represents 50 area businesses, does not want to be involved with anything trying to change the traditional recipe. Last year, more than 700 participants vied for the one award, fifty percent from Italy, with the majority of entrants being women. This year, applications are open for 180 judges who will choose the world’s best tiramisu over four days of heavy eating, uh, competition.

It All Starts With Coffee, Bread And Butter

What do we mean? Breakfast in the Netherlands of course!

The home of Douwe Egberts is also home to a plateful of very specific breakfast items. They include chocolate sprinkles and flakes, peanut butter, and spice-filled cake.

Let’s start with the sprinkles, where it’s socially-acceptable for an adult to eat said sprinkles for breakfast. Take a plain (or toasted) slice of bread, spread with butter, then spread a thin layer of the sprinkles on the butter. Chocolate is the most popular flavor of ‘hagelslag’ (literally hailstorm), but there are many flavor options, including white chocolate, fruit flavors, anise (another popular flavor), and they’re available in different colors. The sprinkles are only lightly sweetened, so not too overly-sugary, as you might imagine. The Dutch might also eat these at lunch, where sandwiches rule.

Add a layer of ‘pindakaas’ (peanut cheese) on top of the butter, and no one will complain about getting chocolate in their peanut butter. In fact, sliced, buttered bread can be topped with cheese, cold meats, jam, honey, strawberries, among others. The ‘ontbijtkoek’ (breakfast cake) is similar to gingerbread, made with rye flour, and spices including cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. And, yes, you would eat it sliced with butter, and use a knife and fork.

Add a cup of fresh Douwe Egberts coffee to this breakfast and you have an authentic, traditional Dutch breakfast. Coffee, bread and butter. What more could you want? Oh! How about a discount on all Douwe Egbert products? Done: Take 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts and Senseo products with no minimum required.*

Decaf Lovers, Rejoice!

DE-Moccana-Decaf-AR-Decafe-NL-150pxAs for that late-night snack, and yes, bread with sprinkles is a good snack or treat too, we have just what you need. Both Moccona Decaf, in instant, and Aroma Rood Decaf, in
ground, are back in stock.

Moccona Classic Decaf is a combination of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans, which make for a balanced aroma and smooth taste and comes in a reusable jar. Aroma Rood Decafe ground coffee also combines Arabica and Robusta beans, so the blend is flavorful and aromatic. Drink Douwe Egberts as late as you like.

Europe In The News

Breakfast Is Best, And Here’s Why

breakfast-face-2A new campaign championed by all EU Member States is working to spread the news about the importance of breakfast in a healthy life. Studies have shown that children and adolescents across Europe don’t eat breakfast at all. For instance, in the Netherlands, around 90 percent of 11 year old children eat breakfast, but in Greece and Slovenia, only about 51 percent do. By the age of 15, that percentage drops to 65 percent in the Netherlands, to 40 percent in Greece and Slovenia.

The campaign is encouraging breakfast for all. Missing breakfast has been connected to behaviors that compromise healthy living, including increased use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, and to more sedentary lifestyles. As the president of the European Medical Association stated, a daily breakfast “is an important step in taking control of your diet and your life.”

Experience A Cup Above

Imagine George Clooney. (It’s ok to linger on that thought…)

Now imagine him walking over to the Nespresso machine, and then serving you a perfectly prepared cup of espresso just the way you like it.

If you lived in Europe, this would be a familiar scenario, as Mr. Clooney has been the face of Nespresso for more than a decade. He is considered the brand’s ambassador, and he highlights the specialty of Nespresso coffee making, rather than himself. It turns out that Europeans have long enjoyed and purchased Nespresso coffee pods, which account for almost half of the ground coffee sales in the European market. In fact, the market for the capsules is growing much faster than the coffee market in general, as much as five times as fast per year for several years now.

americano-w-strokeBecause of the disposable capsules, Nespresso machines are often compared to Keurig machines. As it happens, the only real similarity is the single cup serving of coffee. Nespresso machines extract coffee with highly pressurized water, where the Keurig is more akin to drip coffee. Nespresso capsules are smaller than K-cups, and a large majority are recyclable. Nespresso machines make espresso, where Keurig does not. (Not sure about espresso? Make an Americano by adding another portion of water to the brewed espresso.)

Even better for consumers, many coffee brands are now making Nespresso-compatible capsules since the patents on them began expiring in 2012. So many high-end and premium brands make capsules for use in Nespresso machines. Here at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we have several brands of European coffee in capsules:

Lavazza, Miscela D’Oro, Pellini, Davidoff, Caffe Vergnano, Kimbo, Caffe Trombetta, Movenpick, Bristot, and Dallmayr.

This week, get 15% off all our Nespresso-compatible capsules with no minimum order.*

Be Sure To Check Out These Capsules

You’ll find all our capsules under Coffee By Type, Capsules, and from there, select Nespresso Capsules.

From Italy, we have Lavazza capsules in four roasts, including decaf; Kimbo in three roasts, and Pellini in four roasts, including one made from organically cultivated coffee beans. We also have organic roasts from Miscela D’Oro, Organic Purezza, and from Bristot with their BIO Organic capsules.

We have several roasts from Miscela D’Oro in capsules, and many of them are promotionally priced. Miscela D’Oro is a company that is growing, so expect to see more from them. Best of all, the discount is valid on those already-low prices too.

A new range of capsules from Caffe Trombetta, another Italian coffee brand, is now available, with great prices and also available for the discount above.

Several capsules are made with recycled and/or biodegradable material. Italian-based Caffe Vergnano makes capsules that are eco-friendly, and can be entirely composted and/or recycled.

Clooney appeared in the first ad for Nespresso back in 2006, where he overheard 2 women talking in glowing terms about Nespresso, though Clooney thinks they are talking about him. When he realizes his mistake, the long-used tag line was delivered: “Nespresso – what else?” If you ask us, we say nothing else compares to Nespresso machine coffee.

Fika, Hygge and the Secret To Happiness at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com

EBC-Scandi-Banner-Coastal-View-082618Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga); Norwegian for “to give comfort, joy;” similar to a hug.

Fika (pronounced fee-ka); old Swedish term, for which there is no English equivalent, but roughly refers to making time for friends and colleagues with coffee and goodies.

It is also the name of a new coffee roast from Lofbergs, but more about that in a moment.

EBC-Scandi-FIKA-082618-E2This week, we are highlighting the range of Scandinavian coffee we offer at EnjoyBettterCoffee.com. No mention of coffee from countries such as Norway, Denmark, and Sweden would be worth its weight in beans without the mention of hygge and fika, key parts of life in the Nordic countries. We aren’t talking about a coffee break, but an extended break, twice a day, with special baked items to make it all cozy and comfortable. And, it’s the law in Sweden that companies give employees two Fikas per day. It is considered socially unacceptable for employees to skip these gatherings.

Happiness-Factor-Scandinavia-2-300px-E2These Scandinavian cultural norms, which put a premium on cozy and warm feelings as key parts of interactions with friends and co-workers, could be a big part of why the Nordic countries consistently place in the top 10 Happiest Countries, per the annual World Happiness Report. For 2018, the report deemed Finland to be the overall happiest country in the world. Following in order are Norway, Denmark, Iceland, with Sweden jumping to 9th place, up from 10 last year. You may already know that the report is based on values assigned to six variables that contribute to well-being: income; healthy life expectancy; social support; freedom; trust, and generosity. Data is pooled from Gallup World Poll surveys to calculate the happy ratings. (The U.S.A. comes in at 18th.)

Are there other reasons for this regional contentment? Frigid weather and long winters may bring communities together in support of each other. (Think of the effort behind a barn-raising where everyone helps the farmer in need.) These countries also offer social programs, affordable higher education and healthcare, and have a high GDP. A Finnish researcher speculates that Finns are quietly satisfied with life conditions, and unwilling to compare what they have against others, comparison being the “thief of joy” (according to Teddy Roosevelt).

Lofbergs-Swedish-Fika-Advert-NLLofbergs, one of the largest coffee roasters in the Nordic countries, is based in Sweden. We offer two exemplary roasts, both new to us: Lofbergs Swedish Fika Medium Roast Ground Coffee and Lofbergs Swedish Fika Dark Roast Ground Coffee. Fika Medium Roast is a light roast (3 of 5) of Arabica beans with a balanced taste and aroma. Fika Dark Roast is rated 4 of 5, made of 100% Arabica beans, including about 1/3 of beans certified by the Rainforest Alliance (an international sustainability organization we have written about here before). These two special roasts alone make this deal special!

Arvid-Advert-NLArvid Nordquist opened a small shop in Stockholm, Sweden in 1884. Today the Arvid Nordquist brand is a leader in premium coffee, food and wine products. We offer three roasts: Medium roast, Extra Dark roast, and Classic Gran Dia, all prime examples of Swedish coffee roasting. In addition, all three are UTZ Certified and CO2 Compensated (read more about these organizations on the product page). The Medium roast is balanced, with chocolate and spice notes. Extra Dark is full-bodied, and intense, with just the right amount of bitterness. Classic Gran Dia is a medium to dark roast, full-bodied, with nut and floral notes, and a nice finish.

Paulig-Advert-wDKRoast-NL-EOur last Nordic brand is Paulig, from Finland, who roasts and packages their coffee out of their facilities in Helsinki. We offer three roasts. Juhla Mokka ground coffee is light-roasted, rich, balanced and intense blend of beans from South America and Africa. Presidentti ground coffee is a light roast (1 of 5) from a blend of beans grown in Africa, and delivers a strong and rich coffee. Juhla Mokka Dark Roast ground coffee is a medium roast coffee with chocolate and baked pastry notes. This coffee works with most preparation methods, including drip, French press and moka pot. All three of these coffees are perfect examples of Finnish coffee and well worth a try.

We get it directly from the region, for the Nordic market, so you are getting the real deal, just as a native would buy.

Coffee In The News

Queen of Specialty Coffee Passes at 96

Erna-KnutsenIt shouldn’t be surprising that a central figure in coffee history, a legend in the coffee industry, and the person credited with originating the term “specialty coffee,” was from Norway. Erna Knutsen died in June, just short of her 97th birthday. Knutsen emigrated to the United Sates in 1927, a couple years after her father arrived alone to work in the shipyards while saving to send for his family. Erna, her mom and two sisters would move to New York, where her parents eventually had four more children.

Erna went on to work as a secretary for a Wall Street firm. Eventually, she joined a coffee, tea and spice trading house in San Francisco. There, she was one of the first women ever to sell green coffee. Legend has it that during the 1970’s, she was able to convince an Indonesian man who was driving to New York city with very special coffee beans to open, roast and cup (taste) the coffee. Ten years on, she bought her own trading house and renamed it Knutsen Coffees, Ltd. (She would later recount that being disallowed from the cupping room because she was a woman actually made buying the company all the sweeter, especially when she fired the men who excluded her.)

Douwe Egberts: Best Coffee In The Netherlands

We enjoy writing about the Netherlands not only because it’s home to Douwe Egberts, but also because it’s a beautiful country with fun traditions. If you are traveling there, try these suggestions for activities to see and do while you’re there.

First, ride a bike. Anytime you are trying to go anywhere. There will be plenty of other bikers on the road, even between towns. Streets in the Netherlands are narrow and filled with parked cars, sometimes trams, walkers and a lot of bicycles. Because of the network of well-maintained bike paths, it is safe, convenient, and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of local transport to get around.

gezellig-2-nbNext, stretch out in the grass at the park, or enjoy a very long lunch with friends, and feel gezellig. This Dutch word (pronounced ‘khuh ZEL ick’) is a term that’s difficult to translate into English, but the word has a general meaning of coziness and friendliness. This feeling of enjoyment is highly valued in the Dutch culture.

The Dutch have some of the lightest and tastiest pastries in Europe: appeltaart, soesjes (tiny cream puffs), and stroopwafels (a syrup cookie made only better by being warmed over your freshly poured cup of coffee).

And, finally, the coffee! Dutch coffee (just like Dutch cheese) is considered the best in the world. Douwe Egberts is the best-selling coffee in the country, and remains popular around the world.

We enjoy Douwe Egberts coffee, and we think you will too. If you haven’t tried it before, this is your chance to scoop up a deal. Of course, if you have tried it, then you already know what a deal it is! This week, get 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts and Senseo coffee and accessories, with no minimum purchase required.

The Netherlands In The News

Don’t Read This Over Your Eggs Benedict

Dutch-people-healthyAccording to European Commission figures, the Dutch exercise more than any other group in Europe, by almost double. Eighty percent cycle, walk, swim, dance and/or garden on a regular basis. The European average is a mere 44%. With the strong and supportive cycling infrastructure, it’s easy for people to cycle to work, or to ride to the tram. The data also showed that the Dutch expressed a preference to perform regularly in sporting activities for pleasure, rather than health. An online and weekend-printed newspaper in the Netherlands crunched the numbers. And, if you’re wondering, yes, they ride bikes in the snow.
