Think Outside the Trash. Recycle.
In Germany, recycling is taken very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that according to a 2017 year-end report, Germany is top in recycling compared to other countries in the world. German households alone recycle 57 percent of their waste. Perhaps that’s because the government provides funding, accessibility and incentives that encourage recycling. Some would say this is thinking outside the box.
The top five recycling countries on the list are all within 3 percentage points in the rankings. The report finds Austria in second place, followed by South Korea in third, by only a mere .1 percent difference. Wales, in the United Kingdom, comes in fourth. That country has an ambitious plan to achieve zero waste by 2050. Switzerland rounds out the top 5.
Just last week, in Europe, the European Union (EU) began debating a strategy for managing plastic waste, with a focus on recycling, renewables & responsible sourcing. One way the EU intends to facilitate this is by making recycling profitable for business. Regardless, single-use coffee cups, such as those at a café, will be banned in the EU by 2030.

Coffee In The News
One Bar of Coffee, Please
In a few cities in the Baltic states of Europe, you can consume your coffee not in a glass, but as a bar (think candy-bar). A start-up company, with the goal of making specialty coffee more accessible, has begun selling edible coffee that tastes like coffee and has caffeine. The makers state that the bars give 4 hours of energy because it is absorbed more slowly in the body; it can go anywhere, and uses the entire coffee cherry. One of the 2 types of bars available is made with beans and the cascara, the fruity part that encases the bean. The flavor is described as dried fruit. The other type, for what it’s worth, is the Milk version. Made the same way as the first bar, but with milk powder added in, the company likens it to a mild cappuccino. We couldn’t help but wonder: Does it melt in your hand?
