Brand Highlight: Bewley’s Irish Coffee

Bewleys-cafe

The Bewley family began selling coffee in 1840 in Ireland after a few years of selling tea from China. Within 50 years, the family opened two cafes, but it wasn’t until 1927 that the flagship store opened on Grafton Street in Dublin. By the end of the 20th century, the company had more than 20 cafes in Ireland and six more around the world. Bewley’s runs the Rebecca’s Café chain in Boston, and moved to the west coast when they purchased the Java City brand. Bewley’s also runs a chain of hotels in the UK and in Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day in Europe

st-patricks-day-parade

Regardless of where you spend the day, some things are universal: Wearing green; dancing; eating and drinking.

In the UK, Birmingham was one of the first cities in the UK to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The parade held in the city is one of the largest worldwide, just behind Dublin, Ireland and New York City.

Germany hosts a huge St. Patrick’s Day party in Munich, of course, where there is a large Irish community. Drinking is a big part of the day.

Dublin, Ireland is the where the party of all parties takes place! By sunrise, revelers are filling the streets, regardless of the weather. The parade starts at noon, but you’ll be too far back in the crowd to see anything if you don’t stake your spot two or more hours before. Before, during and after, they’ll be dancing in the streets.

Irish Coffee Recipes

Irish coffee at its most basic is made with hot coffee, whiskey, sugar and whipped cream. The drink is simple to make, so you can whip one up in just a few minutes. We included a list of fun ways you can jazz up your Irish coffee too.

Basic Recipeirish-coffee-shamrock

  • 1 cup fresh hot coffee
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar (brown, white, or substitute maple syrup)
  • 3 Tablespoons (1.5oz) Irish whiskey
  • Cream, slightly whipped

Directions:

  1. Using a footed mug, pour the hot coffee to about ¾ full.
  2. Add the sweetener, and stir to dissolve. Blend in the whiskey.
  3. Gently pour the cream over the top of a spoon held above the mug so it falls on top gently. Enjoy!

Variations:

* Add a garnish such as a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg or shaved chocolate on top.

* Serve it on ice. Use a splash of cream instead of the whipped.

* Substitute Irish Cream liqueur for the whiskey.

* Substitute half-and-half for the cream.

* Add 2 teaspoons Crème de Menthe with the sugar and whiskey.

* Drizzle Crème de Menthe on the cream for a touch of green.

Coffee In The News, Expanded Edition, From EnjoyBetterCoffee.com

Have you heard the latest news about coffee?
We’ve got the scoop, so read on!

First in line today are beans that are out of this world, literally. These beans will be launched in a rocket, and roasted in space. Two men from Dubai are proposing a spacecraft that would hold a capsule with 300kg of raw coffee beans and use the heat of re-entry to roast the beans. The 20-minute re-entry would create the heat in the pressurized capsule where the beans can float freely inside. The guys behind the idea think the lack of gravity will allow the beans to be roasted on all sides evenly. Once safely back on Earth, the beans would be used to make coffee that will initially be sold in Dubai.

Beans-In-Space
The plans do not share how much a cup of this space blend would cost the consumer. Look for more sometimes next year, when the proposed launch could happen.

antimicrobial-crIn other news, microbiology researchers in the UK have found that antimicrobial reusable coffee cups are safer to use than ordinary plastic reusable cups. As you may know, in some European countries, cafes offer reusable cups to patrons, with discounts and other incentives to encourage the use of returnable cups. Using a variety of cleaning methods researchers measured and compared bacterial growth from the surfaces of both regular and treated cups. Not only were the treated cups shown to be more than 99% effective at keeping growth down, the study also found that the best way to inhibit bacterial growth on the cup’s surface was to properly wash the cups in hot water and detergent. And, yes, it took a just-released study to tell us that last bit.

How about a Charcoal Latte? This coffee drink contains activated charcoal, which some claim helps cleanse the body of toxins. (It’s sometimes used in the ER for Charcoal-lattepeople who have swallowed poisons.) Apparently, the appeal is the wide range of flavors and aromas that are added in, such as lavender, honey, flowers, and the dark color of the brew. Food and medical experts note that the frequent use of activated charcoal is not recommended. The charcoal can bind to both toxins and vital nutrients, ridding your body of both.

Coffee In The News

Coffee + Alcohol + Surprise = Longer Life

coffee-and-alcoholA study from the University of California, Irvine, found that participants who drank two cups of coffee per day and those who drank two glasses of wine or beer per day had a decrease in their chances of mortality. More surprising for researchers was the finding that overweight people in their 70’s lived longer than normal- or under-weight people of the same age did. The study began in 2013 monitoring 1600 people in their 90’s through biannual checkups used to identify factors and life choices made by people living past 90 years.

Drink Coffee, Be Generous

A study out this month has found that people are more likely to give something to someone else if they are holding something warm. Holding a cold beverage had the opposite effect. In one part of the study, subjects were asked to rate personality traits of individuals about whom they were given only a packet of information. Participants answered questions that were broken down into two categories: Warm vs cold, i.e., generous/ungenerous; happy/unhappy; sociable/anti-social, etc. Those drinking hot drinks were more generous in their responses. The second study found participants, when presented with the opportunity to give a gift certificate to themselves or to friends, were more likely to share when they had a hot drink in their hands rather than a cold one.

Coffee vs Espresso: They’re Both Winners! 🏆

Coffee vs Espresso: Caffeine, Preparation and More

coffee-vs-espresso
Here at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we often talk amongst ourselves about which we prefer: Coffee or Espresso. Of course, we love coffee, so we enjoy both coffee and espresso. But we’ve found that there are many myths about espresso, so we are here to clear them up! Some people think that espresso is just another way of making coffee, and that is true. But it isn’t the entire story.

coffee-prep-methods

First, a big difference between coffee and espresso is the preparation method. Coffee can be made in several ways: Drip, pour-over, French Press (one of our favorites), moka pot, Senseo maker, K-cup, cold brew, and a few others. We even know someone who pours hot water into coffee grounds in his cup, and mixes, then drinks, leaving the grounds in the cup. (In some cultures, the grounds are read to divine future information.)

espresso-closeup-cropEspresso, which refers to the way the coffee is made, requires hot water under pressure and some amount of time for extraction. Different espresso machines are made to use a specific temperature of hot water coupled with an extraction time of 20-25 seconds.

Would you be surprised to learn that one of the biggest misconceptions about the difference is the caffeine content? One ounce of espresso has less than 75mg of caffeine, while an 8oz cup of coffee has up to 185 mg (depending on brew method and type of bean used). So a single espresso shot, or a double shot (two ounces) will still likely have less caffeine than a cup of coffee.

man-espresso-cupPart of that perceived difference can also be attributed to the drink size. Two ounces of espresso, known as a double shot, and drunk in a relatively short time as per usual, can make the drinker feel the effects of the caffeine more quickly than a leisurely cup of coffee drunk over several minutes or more. But we assure you, the caffeine is not equivalent.

At EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we have coffee, espresso, instant, coffee alternatives (Ricore, Leroux, Cafix) and more! You can search our coffee by the brand’s country, by pods or capsules, and even sustainable and organic coffees. You’ll find these groups under Coffee By Type from our home page.

One Last Note About Espresso

espresso-machine-w-beans
Espresso became popular at the start of the 20th century in Italy with the development of machines built to make coffee. Espresso bars became a place to meet and socialize. Tiny cups were all the rage. The word espresso is used to describe both a roast of coffee (Espresso Roast) and a method of brewing. Espresso Roast refers to coffee roasted so that it is somewhat darker than traditional American roasts. The espresso roast highlights the bitter-sweetness of the bean while keeping the acidity (the tartness) down, and of course, is great for making espresso.

Smoked Espresso Sea Salt Perks Up Dinner

espresso-saltA specialty spice and herb seasoning company, out of California, has created a smoked espresso sea salt that can add a burst of flavor to your meal. The blend uses gourmet Italian roasted espresso powder, along with salt from the Pacific Ocean. It is then smoked low and slow. They recommend using this as a sprinkle on protein shakes or chocolate ice cream, dusting cookies, replacing salt in baked goods, and of course, our favorite, as a marinade or rub for meat. Coffee: Not just for drinking anymore.
