Cool Beans Help To Relax

A spa based in a Chicago hotel is now offering this refreshing start to the day.

coffee-scrub-300pxThe three-part package delivers an espresso body scrub, a full-body massage, and a shot of espresso. It’s gonna be a good day!

The scrub is a mixture of espresso beans, honey and essential oils, so you can enjoy the great aroma of coffee while exfoliating the skin. The aesthetician will then use a warm towel to remove the mixture, leaving your pores open and ready for the massage. The Swedish-style massage is relaxing and calming, but even better, as it comes to an end, and you must prepare to enter the real world, you get to enjoy a shot of espresso. Now, you’re ready to start the day. This little treat for yourself will run you $210 and up, before tip.

We offer many brands of espresso, drip coffee, pods and capsules of delicious, European coffee, and you can make your own scrub, and your own espresso shot, for a lot less than going to Chicago. In fact, we want you to love our coffee as much as we do, so we are giving you 10% off your order of $30 or more at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

European Coffee Specialties

Austria: In a lovely Viennese café, the drink to order is a Wiener Melange. It’s espresso with steamed milk and light foam, and is delicious with any torte you might try.

France: In Paris, try the Café Crème, an espresso drink with a lot of steamed milk, so it is most like a cappuccino, something the French don’t usually order.

Ireland: Of course it has to be Irish coffee! Hot coffee, Irish whiskey, brown sugar and whipped cream make this a cold-weather treat. If you like this drink, you can get a rum version, but you’ll have to visit northern Germany.

European-coffee-examples-nl-edit

Italy: Espresso is the standard coffee drink, but you should only drink it with milk in the morning there. (Italians believe that milk affects the digestive system when drunk after morning.) Italians like a sweet pastry with their espresso, stuffed with custard, marmalade, or Nutella.

Sweden and Finland: Fika (mid-morning and late-afternoon coffee breaks), always better with friends, means a coffee with a bun or roll. Try a cardamom-style kardemummabullar or a heavily-iced cinnamon roll known as a kanelbulle.

Enjoy Better Coffee has coffee brands from all these countries. We think you should go European style, and the discount above makes it even easier to enjoy a “European holiday.”

Coffee In The News

Cold Brew In Top 5 Popular Foods for 2017

Cold brew coffee and its popularity have increased rapidly since 2016, per Google Trends’ Beverage report. Want to try a fancy barista-style cold brew? Simply start with high-quality beans (we have plenty from which to choose). Grind the beans semi-coarse. Stir ¾ cup grounds with 4 cups of water, and put in the fridge for 6-24 hours. Strain in a sieve lined with a coffee filter. To make a cup, use one-part concentrate with 2 parts water, or to taste. Enjoy! Btw, the other top items in the food category for 2017: Zoodles (zucchini noodles); ketogenic foods (based on a newer popular diet); riced veggies (think cauliflower, sweet potato and broccoli); and poke bowls (a deconstructed sushi roll in a bowl, with rice or noodles, vegetables, and sauce).

Forget Butter; There’s Egg In My Capp

K-Cappuccino-w-Egg-Yolk-200pxThis trend, from South Korea, involves straining out the egg white, then dropping the yolk in a cup of espresso and whisked. Top with heavy cream, cocoa powder and serve! Someone described it as drinking espresso “Rocky” style. Apparently the heat from the coffee kills the bacteria from the raw egg.

Scandinavian Christmas Traditions

santa-w-porridgeChristmas is known as Jul or Joulua in Scandinavia. Santa Claus was originally described as a gnome, a simple bearded farmer, who did good deeds and caused a little trouble too. He expected a bowl of porridge with a pat of butter to be left out for him on Christmas Eve. In the last 100 years, he has become more like Santa Claus in size and shape, but instead of a chimney, the jolly elf enters through the front door.

traditional-swedish-christmas-buffet-or-julbord-300Traditional foods include meatballs, ribs, specially-marinated cod, herring, cabbage, and ham washed down with a big mug of glogg, a mulled wine. Finding the almond in your Christmas pudding means you will have a prosperous year, and you may even get a little gift for the honor.

And of course, coffee is always served. Scandinavian coffee is delicious, from the select beans which are then carefully and gently roasted, resulting in a distinctive style and flavor of coffee. Scandinavians are one of the top consumers of coffee on a per-capita, or per-person, basis.

These are just a few of the fun, interesting and unique traditions that Scandinavians enjoy this time of year. Please read farther down to find out more about holiday traditions in these countries.

Here’s our roast review to help you decide among these enjoyable brews.

Paulig-Advert-wKavhi-2017-NLPaulig, from Finland, roasts and packages their coffee out of their facilities in Helsinki. We offer two roasts. Juhla Mokka Ground Coffee is light-roasted, rich, balanced and intense blend of beans from South America and Africa. Presidentti Ground Coffee is a light roast (1 of 5) blend of beans grown in Africa, and delivers a strong and rich coffee. These coffees are perfect examples of Finnish coffee.

Lofbergs-Advert-NLLofbergs Lila, one of the largest coffee roasters in the Nordic countries, is based in Sweden. We offer three exemplary roasts made with 100% Arabica beans: the Medium roast is perfect anytime with a rich taste and aroma (2 of 5); the Jubilee roast is rich with sweet notes (3 of 5), and Kharisma is dark, intense, nutty with subtle fruit notes (4 of 5). About 1/3 of the beans in each blend is certified by the Rainforest Alliance (an international sustainability organization we have written about here before). All are available already ground.

Arvid-Advert-3Blends-NLArvid Nordquist opened a small shop in Stockholm, Sweden in 1884. Today Arvid Nordquist is a leader in premium coffee, food and wine products. We offer three roasts: Medium roast, Extra Dark roast, and Gran Dia, all prime examples of Swedish coffee roasting. In addition, all three are UTZ Certified and CO2 Compensated (read more about these organizations on the product page). The Medium roast is balanced, with chocolatey and spicey notes. Extra Dark (intense) is full-bodied, and intense, with just the right amount of bitterness. Gran Dia is a medium to dark roast, full-bodied, with nut and floral notes, with a nice finish.

Holiday Delivery Suggested Deadlines

Order by Friday, December 8th to be assured of delivery by December 25th. After that, you’ll have to choose expedited shipping to receive your order in time.

More Scandinavian Traditions Explored

In Sweden, Advent (the 4 Sundays before 12/25) kicks off the season. St. Lucia Day, December 13, brings children dressed in white, singing angelic hymns, carrying candles led by a young girl wearing a crown of candles. Christmas porridge is sweetened rice pudding sprinkled with cinnamon, a staple of the big meal on Christmas Eve. It’s where the single almond will be found by one lucky diner. In Finland, it’s not Christmas until you’ve had your Christmas Sauna. You can always pick up your ham that’s been cooking there too! That’s right, the holiday ham used to be cooked (smoked) in a sauna, a practice recently gaining popularity again. And, that marinated cod fish? Well, it is known as lutefisk, whitefish soaked in lye, and can have an overpowering aroma. It appears to be an acquired taste, and believe it or not, is more popular with Norwegian expats living in the U.S. than with the people back in the old country.

Finally, and this is big, Finland is where Santa lives the other 364 days a year. Visitors can see him in his natural home environment, a town on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland.

Let’s Fika! (It’s a Coffee and Pastry Break)

Who drinks the most coffee in the world? For 2016, it was the Finns, according to the International Coffee Organization. In Finland, adults drink more than 26 pounds (approximately 78 gallons) of coffee a year. Other northern European countries such as Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden are usually in the top 10 coffee-consuming countries list too.

Perhaps these countries produce delicious coffee because the people like good coffee. Or maybe it is the long, cold winters that spurred the coffee drinking. We can’t say why, but we do know the coffees we have from Sweden and Finland are the epitome of Nordic coffees.

Up for some more unusual and surprising facts about Scandinavia? Read on!

Danish pastry is not from Denmark. It is from Austria. · Sweden’s “Moose Crossing” road signs are apparently the most popular souvenir in Sweden, as many are reported stolen every year.

Finns love a sauna – in fact, they claim to have invented the sauna (as do the Swedes). With over 2 million saunas in the country, that’s one for every 2.5 people.

The Swedish are very inventive. The zipper, the pacemaker and the computer mouse are Swedish. So are Ikea and H&M stores.

Finland is known as the “land of a thousand lakes.” In fact, it has more than 180,000, more lakes in relation to a country’s size than any other country. Finland has one lake for every 26 people.

Norwegians created the World Barista Championships, first held in 2000 in Monaco.

An old Icelandic superstition says drinking piping hot coffee made you ugly and colder coffee made you prettier. Additionally, if you put the cream in your coffee before sugar, you wouldn’t get married for seven years.

Nordic People Are Happiest; You’ll Be Too With An Extra Day For Our Weekly Sale

Who are the happiest people on the planet? People living in the Scandinavian part of the world have a lot of cheer, according to the World Happiness Report, for 2017, released last week. Interestingly, these countries have often been in the top 10 section of the list since the annual report’s inception in 2012. This year, all the Nordic countries scored high, from Norway in first place, then Denmark (2), Iceland (3), Finland (5) and Sweden (10). (Scandinavia = Norway, Sweden, Denmark; Nordic includes other countries such as the 2 above.)  The report is generated from massive amounts of data including both subjective and objective measurements in areas of caring, freedom, generosity, honesty, health, income and good governance. Happiness is a factor considered to be a measure of social progress.

We think those countries have a lot to be happy about, and that includes delicious coffee from Sweden and Finland. Below we highlight our best roasts from three iconic Nordic brands:
