Jacobs Douwe Egberts Supports Climate Smart Agriculture

Douwe Egberts Instant Coffee In The News

In the Vietnamese Central Highlands (also known as the “Kingdom of Coffee”), the climate is perfect for coffee plants. Because of the ideal combination of rain and sun on the rich soil of these mountains, most of the country’s coffee crop is grown there, and it’s the reason Vietnam is the world’s second largest coffee exporter.

DE-Kingdom-of-Coffee-NL
DE-Sustainability-Project-crA new project to train coffee farmers in sustainable practices was just announced this month. Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) has partnered with a leading business firm based in the Netherlands that has enterprises in the agriculture, food processing, shipping, and finance industries. The three-year plan is to train Vietnamese coffee farmers in climate change resilience techniques, fertilizing, and work safety. Another agricultural solutions leader is on board too, helping the farmers meet growing product demand, especially in sourcing traceability and safety. The $1 million (USD) project will help 3000 farmers in the Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Gia Lai provinces of Vietnam. Because JDE “recognizes the various environmental and social issues that go with coffee cultivation,” it’s a great match for the farmers.

Starting with 30 demonstration plots about 1-2 hectares each, various approaches to soil and fertilizer management, crop protection products, and irrigation will be tested. The most successful techniques will be then used across 300 hectares of coffee farms. This project is similar to another initiative we shared with you in 2016, where another 3000 farmers in the Central Highlands region were similarly trained.

Housing Complex Is World’s First

netherlands-3d-printed-homes-crNext year, the city of Eindhoven, Netherlands, will unveil the first ever 3-D-printed home. The first is expected to have three bedrooms, printed in concrete by a robotic arm. An advantage to printing the pod-like homes is the customizable components, even for natural objects found on the home’s plot. In addition, the process of building is shortened from months to weeks, and the robots will replace the need for craftsmen such as masons and carpenters. Monthly rental is set to be between $1000 and $1400 USD. As the technology improves and becomes more popular, experts predict the prices will come down to make the housing more affordable in the future.

Clever Jar Hack Puts Douwe Egberts In News

Douwe Egberts Instant Coffee In The News

A woman in Australia posted a quick coffee-drinking “hack” (think: shortcut) on a Facebook group for new moms. She showed a Douwe Egberts jar of Pure Gold Instant coffee with sugar filled in the removable lid. That way she had her coffee and her sugar conveniently in one place – spoon one of each into a mug, then add hot water. She demonstrated in pictures how to remove the top, then take the plastic cover off of the lid. Fill the glass lid with sugar, pop the plastic cover back on, and put the lid on the jar. As the Dutch say: Alstublieft! (There you have it!)

DE-Instant-Jar-Sugar-Hack-B

After posting the hack, the group was inspired! Other members posted their own ideas for the jars. They included:

–Hummus in the lid, with cut-up vegetables in the jar

–Yogurt in the lid, with chopped up fruit in the jar

–Use the lid alone for raisins or other small bites

The post also noted that the lid seals tight, so there’s no spillage with any ingredients.

We found some other great ideas for repurposing the jars too, and would love to hear your ideas too. (Tell us about your best one on our Facebook page!)

Get Ready For Koningsdag With Douwe Egberts

From Princess, to Queen, to King

What started as a day to honor a princess in the 1800’s turned into a day to honor the Queen of the Netherlands at the end of the century. In the 1900’s, the date changed, but the party remained the same: Honoring the previous Queen (Wilhelmina) and the then-current Queen (Beatrix). Today, with a minor date change (now April 27), the party is for the King’s birthday. King Willem-Alexander turns 51 years young this month, and the entire Netherlands will be celebrating! In Amsterdam, imagine a city-wide open-air festival, with almost 1 million people arriving to party hard!

DE-KingsDay-2018-Banner-NLIn Dutch, it’s known as Koningsdag. The night before, revelers fill the streets while others prepare their spot for their belongings for the national “freemarket” in the morning. People spread a blanket, offering trinkets and goods (think yard sale) along every street, corner and canal. Everyone is wearing orange, the national color, in honor of the House of Orange, the Dutch monarchy’s lineage. Musical performances are found in every park and plein (square) across the country. The canals are filled with smaller boats of raucous partiers, drinking beer from plastic cups, if the weather cooperates, that is. The 1500 bridges that cross the various canals are also lined with spectators wanting to see the boats. Traffic is restricted, most businesses are closed, so the streets are filled with people.

Koningsdag-King-Willem-Alexander-CrThe royal family always visits a town or two on King’s Day, and participates in the good-natured fun, drinking and eating. This year, the family plans to be in Groningen, a city in the northern part of the Netherlands.

By 8pm, the parties move indoors to the pubs and clubs, at least for those still able to continue on.

The party isn’t just in the Netherlands, either. We have some information about Dutch King’s Day celebrations in the U.S. further down below.

You too can celebrate King’s Day, well, like a king, by drinking Douwe Egberts (before the beer), and saving 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts.*

King’s Day: Not Just In The Netherlands Anymore

murphy-windmillThis year, the largest Orange Party in southern California happens in Los Angeles, at the Shoreline Aquatic Park in Long Beach. Similar to the Amsterdam party, there will be Dutch food vendors, live music, a flea-market, photo stations, and of course, Heineken beer. Since it is LA, everyone is in fashionable and spectacular orange ensembles. Be there on Sunday, April 29.

If you find yourself in northern California over King’s Day weekend, be sure to stop by Golden Gate Park on Saturday. The Murphy Windmill is scheduled to be turned on, and that in itself is a rare occasion. The party will include music, Dutch food trucks (snacks, pancakes, pea soup, sausage and herring), a group bike ride, children’s toy exchange, Heineken beer and activities for everyone. Look for lots of orange hair, orange shirts and orange streamers.

The Future Is Now

DE-Netherlands-Innovations-Banner-NL-CR

We here at Enjoy Better Coffee have long admired the Netherlands – and not just because they’ve been the home of Douwe Egberts for more than two centuries. The Netherlands has often been at the forefront of social, artistic, and humanitarian change, so it should be no surprise that the country is also an early adopter of new technologies. We have written about several of these:

  • Self-driving cars
  • Converting cow droppings into biogas to generate energy
  • Leading the world in recycling amounts
  • Installing solar panels on a stadium rooftop which generate enough energy to power almost 300 homes
  • Serving coffee in a café via a drone

But this next big thing is straight out of science fiction: Flying Cars!

Dutch-PAL-V-Flying-Car-250px-crThat is, a Dutch company has delivered the first half-car, half-plane vehicle, known as a Personal Air and Land Vehicle, at the Geneva motor show. With three wheels, two seats, and a propeller, the vehicle is expected to cost over $600,000 in the first production run. Owners will have to be certified as gyroplane pilots in order to avail themselves of the flight capabilities. The vehicle can drive up to 150 mph, fly up to 110 mph, and travel over 300 miles on a single tank of unleaded gas. The rotor and propeller fold away for driving, and the process to go from one to the other takes about 10 minutes. Oh, there’s no escaping a bad traffic jam. This vehicle needs a short runway to take off and land. We wondered: Are there cup holders?

There are other flying cars in development in other parts of the world, including one from a U.S.-based company, and another from a German startup company, but the Dutch are ready to deliver.

It’s that same entrepreneurial spirt that Egbert Douwes showed when he opened The White Ox, a grocery shop, in 1753. The popularity of his roasted coffee grew and within 50 years, the next generation of the family was selling coffee and tea products nationally and beyond.

Speaking of Cutting Edge Trends…

Ground coffee offers the convenience of being ready to make a pot of coffee anytime. But whole beans are trending in popularity! That is because you can grind it yourself to the coarseness, or fineness, that works for the way you plan to make the coffee. For instance, if you are using a French Press, try grinding the beans in a coarse way, to experience the full flavors, taste and notes of the coffee. If you are using an espresso machine, then grind the beans fine, while still being able to feel the coffee grains. Turkish coffee is completely powdery with no grains at all. In between, you have a medium grind, similar to rough sand, which works perfectly for automatic drip brewers with flat or cone filters. For K-cups, the grind should be medium, leaning toward the fine side of the spectrum, like with table salt.

Try the different methods to get the coffee you want to enjoy! Grinding coffee beans yourself gives you the control over your coffee. Since you are grinding beans right before brewing, you can grind them as coarse or as fine as you want at that moment. Sure, you will have to take the time to grind them each time before brewing, but it really only takes a minute to grind up enough beans for a pot, so get in the habit of doing it!

We have three of Douwe Egberts best roasts in whole bean: Excellent Aroma, Mocca Aroma and Aroma Rood.

DE-WB-Advert-NL-Order-250Excellent Aroma is a medium/dark roasted coffee. It has an intense taste, yet is very smooth.

Mocca Aroma is a rich blend with an enticing aroma, and a strong body.

Aroma Rood smells delicious, has a full body, with spicy notes.

Aroma Rood whole beans are one of our most popular products, and they are on sale and still eligible for the discount above. Don’t miss out on this great deal for great coffee!

Church Converted to Café

Abshoven-cafe-300pxIn a small town in the Dutch province of Limburg, a new coffee shop has opened in an 18th-century abbey. The chapel was originally purchased with the intention to be restored, along with the English garden surrounding the church. Originally a monastery and later, a convent, the compound was decimated by fire in 1995, leaving only the chapel and living quarters, and the medieval cellar beneath. Now all fully restored, brick walls, high ceilings, and large windows give the rooms a warm light, and plenty of wall space for local artists to display their works.

Did you know that the Netherlands was one of the first countries to recognize the U.S. as an independent country? Stay in Amsterdam, But Visit These Places

There is so much more to the Netherlands, home of Douwe Egberts. Today, we will highlight a few other cities in Holland that are travel-worthy, and of course, always serving Douwe Egberts at the best spots!

de-amstrdm-header-wp

Amsterdam is the 13th most-visited city in Europe by overnight tourists, but trust us when we say it is not the only place to visit if you are in the Netherlands for a day.

For instance, Rotterdam is the second-largest city, and has a very modern look and feel since being rebuilt after WW II. The unusual and innovative architecture includes floating houses, offices and a farm; an artistic cabled bridge nicknamed “The Swan”; the Art Nouveau Witte Huis (White House); the Markthal, a ginormous market hall with a ceiling that in itself is a work of art (see below); and, for something really on the nose, the Cool District, lined with eclectic shops and restaurants.

Rotterdam-Delft-Sights

If you love quaint, then you must stop in Delft. Home to the classic blue-and-white ceramics crafted in the area since the 1600’s, the original intent of the work was to emulate Chinese porcelain. Shops line the canals with a range of Delftware and other souvenirs. The town once served as the base of the ruling House of Orange, and you can visit the ancestral family church, Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), which overlooks the town’s market square. The gothic tower of the church stands over the tombs of the princes and princesses of the House of Orange.

Visit The Hague to see the seat of the Netherlands’ government and home to the royal family. The Hague is a center of global business too, so many expats live there. You’ll find a vast culinary scene influenced by the many home countries of the residents and several museums, all outstanding in their own right. See the Royal Picture Gallery, the world’s largest Mondrian collection, a spectacular private car collection, and of course, the history of the city and its people.

Self-Driving Car Gets Insured

We recently wrote about the first group of shared self-driving cars being planned for use in the Netherlands. Now the first car insurance company in the Netherlands has stepped up to insure the self-drivers. The company is already the largest car insurer in the country, and predicts this new plan will turn the car insurance market on its head. That is, insurance premiums will no longer be based on accident history. Plans include remediation for the electronics and software used in the car when accidents occur.
