Sustainable Coffee at Enjoy Better Coffee

Earth Day By The Numbers

Earth Day began as an idea for a national day to focus on the environment. A U.S. Senator from Wisconsin founded the day, after seeing the devastation of a massive oil spill in California the previous year. Promoting the day as a “teach in” and after reviewing college schedules to determine the best time (between Spring break and final exams), April 22 was selected. Here’s a quick tally of some key numbers relating to Earth Day.

Sustainable Coffees: Now Grouped On Our Site

EBC-Sustainable-Coffee
You asked to be able to see our sustainable products together, and now you can by selecting Coffee By Type, Sustainable Products to see what delicious coffees you can choose. We also have them grouped along the side by the type of sustainable certification. Here’s some we enjoy:

Lavazza Gran Selezione is Rainforest Alliance Certified, with 100% Arabica coffee beans, intense and full-bodied, with chocolate notes. The medium grind of this ground coffee makes it right for most coffee makers.

All of our illy products are certified by an organization that promotes a Responsible Supply Chain Process, a testament to the quality of illy’s supplier relationships. We have decaf, fine grind (for espresso), Moka grind for Moka pots, and whole beans. The espresso is perfect Italian style, which makes drinking illy a real treat.

UTZ Certification, at a high-level, is a program that is focused on good agricultural practices, farm management and the environmental impacts. The Certification is the largest program for sustainable farming of coffee in the world. Coffee farmers and coffee producers each have their own specifications to meet for certification. We carry a range of UTZ Certified products from Douwe Egberts, Dallmayr, Arvid Nordquist and Maison Du Cafe.

Caffe Vergnano’s Nespresso-Compatible capsules are now compostable, that’s right, the capsules are 100% biodegradable. All five roasts are delicious, convenient and earth-friendly.

Coffee In The News

Coffee Bean Tea In A Bottle

cascara-tea-200pxCascara, the dried skin of a coffee bean, has long been discarded as waste in the processing of the bean. We have mentioned the use of the cascara to enhance drinks, but now, a company is bottling a tea made from the husks.

Considered a superfood, the cascara skin is all antioxidants, polyphenols (for immunity), and caffeine. The tea is in four flavors, including sweetened original. The company behind the tea makes cold brew coffees, and sees their products as minimizing waste, supporting sustainable coffee farmers, and offering additional opportunities for local farmers.

Technology Delivers Clear Coffee

Touted as the “first colorless coffee drink in the world,” the makers of the product use technology and high-quality ingredients to produce a clear caffeinated liquid that has no preservatives, artificial flavors, sugar or other sweeteners. Taste testers describe it as “drinkable” with a “cheap wine” aftertaste. The drink is only available in the United Kingdom right now, but the makers are planning to expand to the U.S.

Get Ready For Koningsdag With Douwe Egberts

From Princess, to Queen, to King

What started as a day to honor a princess in the 1800’s turned into a day to honor the Queen of the Netherlands at the end of the century. In the 1900’s, the date changed, but the party remained the same: Honoring the previous Queen (Wilhelmina) and the then-current Queen (Beatrix). Today, with a minor date change (now April 27), the party is for the King’s birthday. King Willem-Alexander turns 51 years young this month, and the entire Netherlands will be celebrating! In Amsterdam, imagine a city-wide open-air festival, with almost 1 million people arriving to party hard!

DE-KingsDay-2018-Banner-NLIn Dutch, it’s known as Koningsdag. The night before, revelers fill the streets while others prepare their spot for their belongings for the national “freemarket” in the morning. People spread a blanket, offering trinkets and goods (think yard sale) along every street, corner and canal. Everyone is wearing orange, the national color, in honor of the House of Orange, the Dutch monarchy’s lineage. Musical performances are found in every park and plein (square) across the country. The canals are filled with smaller boats of raucous partiers, drinking beer from plastic cups, if the weather cooperates, that is. The 1500 bridges that cross the various canals are also lined with spectators wanting to see the boats. Traffic is restricted, most businesses are closed, so the streets are filled with people.

Koningsdag-King-Willem-Alexander-CrThe royal family always visits a town or two on King’s Day, and participates in the good-natured fun, drinking and eating. This year, the family plans to be in Groningen, a city in the northern part of the Netherlands.

By 8pm, the parties move indoors to the pubs and clubs, at least for those still able to continue on.

The party isn’t just in the Netherlands, either. We have some information about Dutch King’s Day celebrations in the U.S. further down below.

You too can celebrate King’s Day, well, like a king, by drinking Douwe Egberts (before the beer), and saving 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts.*

King’s Day: Not Just In The Netherlands Anymore

murphy-windmillThis year, the largest Orange Party in southern California happens in Los Angeles, at the Shoreline Aquatic Park in Long Beach. Similar to the Amsterdam party, there will be Dutch food vendors, live music, a flea-market, photo stations, and of course, Heineken beer. Since it is LA, everyone is in fashionable and spectacular orange ensembles. Be there on Sunday, April 29.

If you find yourself in northern California over King’s Day weekend, be sure to stop by Golden Gate Park on Saturday. The Murphy Windmill is scheduled to be turned on, and that in itself is a rare occasion. The party will include music, Dutch food trucks (snacks, pancakes, pea soup, sausage and herring), a group bike ride, children’s toy exchange, Heineken beer and activities for everyone. Look for lots of orange hair, orange shirts and orange streamers.

Dallmayr Kaffee In The Spotlight: Drink Up!

ebc-coffee-and-beer-e

A guy walks into a German bar. While this may sound like the start of a joke (and maybe it is!), but in this case, we want you to think about what you might drink after walking into a German bar.

This week, we’re talking about a great German coffee, Dallmayr. But we can’t talk about great German coffee without talking about German beer. That’s because Germany is a top consumer of both coffee and beer. Per person, in Germany, consumption of beer does not even approach consumption of coffee: 28 gallons of beer vs 43 gallons of coffee vs 40 gallons of water per year.

Coffee and beer have been around for centuries. Both have been treated as special drinks through the years, yet were banned at times, revered at other times, reserved only for the wealthy at times, and today, are considered specialty, artisanal beverages.

Hildegard-of-BingenIt’s useful to remember that beer was drunk because for much of that time, water was often contaminated. Even Hildegard of Bingen, a Benedictine abbess from the 11th century, encouraged the drinking of beer for health and safety reasons. Today in Germany, more than 1300 breweries produce more than 5000 brands, more than any other country in the world!

Meanwhile, coffee proliferation contributed to the spread of a new business, coffee houses, where politicians, artists, writers, and women found company and similar-thinking neighbors and friends. Meeting there even generated a bit of gossip!

dm-restaurantDallmayr is also a key player in the bar scene of Munich, where they offer several options for bar drinks. In addition to their Café Bistro, and a Bar & Grill, they also have a Michelin-starred restaurant. And, yes, they offer beer, wine and of course their delicious coffees.

This week, in honor of National Beer Day here in the U.S. (April 7), we are offering a deal on Dallmayr that you will want to toast: Get 15% off your order of this great coffee brand with no minimum order at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com!*

Please use coupon code: DALLMAYR

*Discount valid from 4/08/2018 through 11:59PM ET on 4/10/2018 at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with 15% off no minimum order required on Dallmayr Kaffee products. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products. Questions? Call us at 800.582.6617 Mon-Fri 9AM-5PM ET.

Dallmayr: The Best Coffees In the World

The first word that comes to mind when we drink Dallmayr is smooth, from the body to the finish. The beans are carefully selected from the best coffee-growing regions, then roasted at the Dallmayr production facilities in the southeast city of Geising, about a 45-minute drive from Dresden.

These are our best sellers:

DM-New-Products-Advert-NL

Dallmayr French Press Selection is a blend created with help from a popular French Press maker. The grind is extra coarse, which is perfect for the French Press maker. The blend is 100% Arabica beans, with a floral and spicy aroma.

We also have 3 very special blends back in stock: Neiva, Kilimanjaro and Granverde. All are 100% Arabica beans, ground, in 8.8oz packs.

Dallmayr Neiva is grown in the coffee belt of Columbia. A single-origin coffee, this medium roast is spicy, with a fresh taste and citrus notes.

Try Dallmayr Grandverde, an organic ground coffee blend from Latin America. The coffee has a delicate nutty taste with a soft finish.

Dallmayr Kilimanjaro is a single-origin coffee from Tanzania. These unique beans are grown at the foot of the mountain, giving the coffee a balanced flavor with light floral notes.

For the Nespresso maker, we have 11 Capsa roasts of capsules, including newer roasts in the Capsa line: Crema d’Oro (light, mild and balanced); Prodomo (the flagship blend, strong aroma, full-bodied and smooth); Chocolat (notes of caramel and dark chocolate in a smooth, creamy espresso), and Vanilla (sweet and delicate, with a delicious aroma). The flavored coffees are perfect for coffee drinks (see below), but any Dallmayr coffee is great on its own (milk’s optional)!

Coffee In The News

These Coffee Drinks Are Easy and Tasty

brown-sugar-caramel-latteTry Capsa Chocolat or Vanilla as the base for this aromatic and sweet treat. Add an ounce of Kahlua, ½ ounce of brandy and a dash of cinnamon. Top with sweetened whipped cream and sit back to enjoy.

These flavored coffees also make a great Brown Sugar and Caramel Latte. Add a tablespoon of brown sugar to the prepared coffee, plus ¼ cup half-and-half, with a drizzle of caramel ice cream topping. (Frothing the cream makes it even dreamier!)
