Jacobs Coffee in the Spotlight

JC-Woman-Magic-Aroma-Banner
Jacobs Coffee is the most popular coffee in Germany according to German consumers. In 1895, Johann Jacobs pioneered the art of commercial coffee roasting. Johann had an exceptional sense of taste and smell, and during his career, he was known and respected as a master roaster. Not surprisingly, Jacobs coffees have wonderful aromas and flavors.

Jacobs flagship coffee is Kronung, German for “coronation,” is a top-seller for its aromatic qualities, mellow flavor and reasonable price. We have several choices in the range, including whole beans, ground and instant. We also have Kronung Mild, from select beans, in ground.

Jacobs Instant coffees are some of their most popular. We have 6 instant coffees, including Americano (finely ground Arabica), Crema (instant with finely ground Arabica beans), Velvet (rich and full), Cronat Kraftig (strong) and Cronat Gold (mild), plus Jacobs Instant Cappuccino, which makes a fine, velvety cappuccino.

Jacobs whole beans are available in the medium and balanced Kronung, Crema (medium), Crema Intenso (medium intense) and Espresso (spicy).

We are celebrating the range of Jacobs coffee this week by giving you 15% off all Jacobs products with no minimum order.*

Germany In The News

German City Honors Elvis

Elvis-Traffic-LightsThe central German town of Friedberg, where Elvis Presley was stationed with the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, has installed 3 traffic lights with the silhouetted images of the singer. The lights communicate to pedestrians to walk or to wait, or in this case, to sing or dance like Elvis! The red light shows Elvis at the mic and the green light shows him swiveling his hips, his trademark. Since the area is already a tourist destination for Elvis fans, this is just another bit of fun to get them all shook up.

Squirrel Terrorizes Man So He Calls Police

squirrelA German man phoned the police to report that he was being chased by a squirrel, as he frantically ran down the street. The police report states that when they arrived, the rodent was still going after his prey, then suddenly stopped and lay down, allowing the officers to take the squirrel into “custody” and later transferred the little guy to an animal rescue center.

For Sausage Lovers Only

Sausage-themed-bandb
Sausages everywhere: The menu, of course; images on the walls; plastic replicas hanging from mobiles; the soap in the shower and more. You can even lay your head to rest on a pillow made to look like a sausage. The sausage-themed Bed & Breakfast opened in Germany last fall, with seven rooms, and conference spaces catering to foodies. The owner is a 4th generation butcher; his family has produced and sold meats in the small town of Rittersbach, Germany for decades. The Bratwurst Hotel also offers workshops in making wurst, and offers souvenir cans of minced sausage flavored with unusual add-ins such as beer, coffee, and chocolate.

Coffee vs Espresso: They’re Both Winners! 🏆

Coffee vs Espresso: Caffeine, Preparation and More

coffee-vs-espresso
Here at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we often talk amongst ourselves about which we prefer: Coffee or Espresso. Of course, we love coffee, so we enjoy both coffee and espresso. But we’ve found that there are many myths about espresso, so we are here to clear them up! Some people think that espresso is just another way of making coffee, and that is true. But it isn’t the entire story.

coffee-prep-methods

First, a big difference between coffee and espresso is the preparation method. Coffee can be made in several ways: Drip, pour-over, French Press (one of our favorites), moka pot, Senseo maker, K-cup, cold brew, and a few others. We even know someone who pours hot water into coffee grounds in his cup, and mixes, then drinks, leaving the grounds in the cup. (In some cultures, the grounds are read to divine future information.)

espresso-closeup-cropEspresso, which refers to the way the coffee is made, requires hot water under pressure and some amount of time for extraction. Different espresso machines are made to use a specific temperature of hot water coupled with an extraction time of 20-25 seconds.

Would you be surprised to learn that one of the biggest misconceptions about the difference is the caffeine content? One ounce of espresso has less than 75mg of caffeine, while an 8oz cup of coffee has up to 185 mg (depending on brew method and type of bean used). So a single espresso shot, or a double shot (two ounces) will still likely have less caffeine than a cup of coffee.

man-espresso-cupPart of that perceived difference can also be attributed to the drink size. Two ounces of espresso, known as a double shot, and drunk in a relatively short time as per usual, can make the drinker feel the effects of the caffeine more quickly than a leisurely cup of coffee drunk over several minutes or more. But we assure you, the caffeine is not equivalent.

At EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we have coffee, espresso, instant, coffee alternatives (Ricore, Leroux, Cafix) and more! You can search our coffee by the brand’s country, by pods or capsules, and even sustainable and organic coffees. You’ll find these groups under Coffee By Type from our home page.

One Last Note About Espresso

espresso-machine-w-beans
Espresso became popular at the start of the 20th century in Italy with the development of machines built to make coffee. Espresso bars became a place to meet and socialize. Tiny cups were all the rage. The word espresso is used to describe both a roast of coffee (Espresso Roast) and a method of brewing. Espresso Roast refers to coffee roasted so that it is somewhat darker than traditional American roasts. The espresso roast highlights the bitter-sweetness of the bean while keeping the acidity (the tartness) down, and of course, is great for making espresso.

Smoked Espresso Sea Salt Perks Up Dinner

espresso-saltA specialty spice and herb seasoning company, out of California, has created a smoked espresso sea salt that can add a burst of flavor to your meal. The blend uses gourmet Italian roasted espresso powder, along with salt from the Pacific Ocean. It is then smoked low and slow. They recommend using this as a sprinkle on protein shakes or chocolate ice cream, dusting cookies, replacing salt in baked goods, and of course, our favorite, as a marinade or rub for meat. Coffee: Not just for drinking anymore.

Must Have Coffee

Coffee-Add-Ins-Banner-E

Not just our first words in the morning, coffee is also a great idea for a party. Whether you have just a few guests or dozens, be sure you offer coffee to your guests. Some people (like us) love good coffee any time of the day; for others, it will be appreciated later in the evening. Offer both decaf and regular, and hot water available for instant drinks and hot cocoa.

Surround the carafes holding the liquids with different sized-cups, spoons and all the stir-ins you can find. Try simple flavors such as:

  • Small chocolate candies (kisses in many flavors; Andes)
  • Flavored syrups
  • Hot cocoa mix (add a spoonful to coffee – yum!)
  • Good instant coffee
  • Raw sugar
  • Real cream
  • Candy canes
  • Whipped cream
  • Candied orange peel
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Assorted teas
  • Flavored creamers
  • Spices: Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Lavender, Cloves (to name a few)
  • For Adults only: Kahlua, Frangelico, Chambord, Whiskey, Cognac

You can be as elaborate or as uncomplicated as you want. You may already have a lot of potential add-ins in your pantry.

Speaking of keeping things simple…

Coffee-Related Appetizers

Coffee makes a delicious BBQ sauce or rub. Serve grilled or broiled pieces of steak, chicken or pork, cut into chunks or strips, on skewers, or prepare (or buy) chicken wings, with a selection of BBQ sauces alongside for dipping. Add a coffee BBQ sauce to baked beans, shredded meat sliders, or for meatballs or sliced sausages in the crockpot.

Here’s an easy coffee BBQ sauce recipe:

Ingredients

  • Coffee-bbq-sauce1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 2 Tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1½ tsp black pepper
  • 1½ Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1½ tsp low-sodium soy sauce

Directions

  1. Combine ketchup, coffee, brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder and chili powder in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally.
  2. Remove from heat. Stir in black pepper, balsamic vinegar, and soy sauce.
  3. Store in the refrigerator. Can be made in advance.
