As they say in the Netherlands, ‘Vrolijk Kerstfeest’

Cheerful Christmas!

dutch-ornaments-christmas-tree-600px

dutch-horns-at-christmas-300pxIt’s that time of year, just as in other parts of Europe and beyond, when adults and children alike focus on and celebrate the Christmas holiday. There might be a Christmas hamper (box or package) from your employer, time to decorate the tree (only after St. Nicolas Day), a 4’ horn to sound at dawn, and most importantly, time spent with the people you love.

In fact, researchers found that in the Netherlands, spending time with family was identified as the most important part of the Christmas season.

Advocaat-Dutch-Eggnog-250px-eThe big day itself is actually two days in the Netherlands. The Dutch celebrate First (25th) and Second (26th) Christmas Days as time spent with family, and indulging in the holiday feast. Traditional holiday favorites include oliebollen (heavy donut), Christmas fruit bread, roasted venison or goose with plenty of vegetables, and the Dutch version of eggnog, Advocaat, actually a creamy brandy custard, often eaten with a spoon.

The Dutch find this time of year special, just as we do. Indulge in the wonder of it all with authentic Dutch coffee from Douwe Egberts. As our gift to you, we’ll take 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts products on www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

Other Dutch Traditions

Christmas Markets are popular in many European cities. Amsterdam has large markets, usually with stalls in wooden cabins, selling food, clothing and gifts. You will also find a Gebakkraam, a food truck with specialties such as appelflappen and oliebollen. One of the most popular markets is the Market at Museumplein, also known as Christmas Village on Ice, where the market stands next to a large public ice rink. Add in some live music and entertainment, and you will have a true Dutch Christmas Market experience.

One More Very Dutch Part of the Holiday

<img class=Gezelligheid is the most important part of the Christmas Season. This Dutch word is difficult to translate, but in general, it refers to the feeling of being with your loved ones, and/or reuniting with someone after a long separation, and/or a general sense of togetherness (think warm and fuzzy feelings).

Lastly, New Year’s Eve (Oud en Nieuw) in the Netherlands, people congregate in the central squares of the cities. Around 11PM, rounds of fireworks begin to welcome the coming year. At the stroke of midnight, more fireworks, more celebrations and more fun!

Scandinavian Christmas Traditions

santa-w-porridgeChristmas is known as Jul or Joulua in Scandinavia. Santa Claus was originally described as a gnome, a simple bearded farmer, who did good deeds and caused a little trouble too. He expected a bowl of porridge with a pat of butter to be left out for him on Christmas Eve. In the last 100 years, he has become more like Santa Claus in size and shape, but instead of a chimney, the jolly elf enters through the front door.

traditional-swedish-christmas-buffet-or-julbord-300Traditional foods include meatballs, ribs, specially-marinated cod, herring, cabbage, and ham washed down with a big mug of glogg, a mulled wine. Finding the almond in your Christmas pudding means you will have a prosperous year, and you may even get a little gift for the honor.

And of course, coffee is always served. Scandinavian coffee is delicious, from the select beans which are then carefully and gently roasted, resulting in a distinctive style and flavor of coffee. Scandinavians are one of the top consumers of coffee on a per-capita, or per-person, basis.

These are just a few of the fun, interesting and unique traditions that Scandinavians enjoy this time of year. Please read farther down to find out more about holiday traditions in these countries.

Here’s our roast review to help you decide among these enjoyable brews.

Paulig-Advert-wKavhi-2017-NLPaulig, from Finland, roasts and packages their coffee out of their facilities in Helsinki. We offer two roasts. Juhla Mokka Ground Coffee is light-roasted, rich, balanced and intense blend of beans from South America and Africa. Presidentti Ground Coffee is a light roast (1 of 5) blend of beans grown in Africa, and delivers a strong and rich coffee. These coffees are perfect examples of Finnish coffee.

Lofbergs-Advert-NLLofbergs Lila, one of the largest coffee roasters in the Nordic countries, is based in Sweden. We offer three exemplary roasts made with 100% Arabica beans: the Medium roast is perfect anytime with a rich taste and aroma (2 of 5); the Jubilee roast is rich with sweet notes (3 of 5), and Kharisma is dark, intense, nutty with subtle fruit notes (4 of 5). About 1/3 of the beans in each blend is certified by the Rainforest Alliance (an international sustainability organization we have written about here before). All are available already ground.

Arvid-Advert-3Blends-NLArvid Nordquist opened a small shop in Stockholm, Sweden in 1884. Today Arvid Nordquist is a leader in premium coffee, food and wine products. We offer three roasts: Medium roast, Extra Dark roast, and Gran Dia, all prime examples of Swedish coffee roasting. In addition, all three are UTZ Certified and CO2 Compensated (read more about these organizations on the product page). The Medium roast is balanced, with chocolatey and spicey notes. Extra Dark (intense) is full-bodied, and intense, with just the right amount of bitterness. Gran Dia is a medium to dark roast, full-bodied, with nut and floral notes, with a nice finish.

Holiday Delivery Suggested Deadlines

More Scandinavian Traditions Explored

In Sweden, Advent (the 4 Sundays before 12/25) kicks off the season. St. Lucia Day, December 13, brings children dressed in white, singing angelic hymns, carrying candles led by a young girl wearing a crown of candles. Christmas porridge is sweetened rice pudding sprinkled with cinnamon, a staple of the big meal on Christmas Eve. It’s where the single almond will be found by one lucky diner. In Finland, it’s not Christmas until you’ve had your Christmas Sauna. You can always pick up your ham that’s been cooking there too! That’s right, the holiday ham used to be cooked (smoked) in a sauna, a practice recently gaining popularity again. And, that marinated cod fish? Well, it is known as lutefisk, whitefish soaked in lye, and can have an overpowering aroma. It appears to be an acquired taste, and believe it or not, is more popular with Norwegian expats living in the U.S. than with the people back in the old country.

Finally, and this is big, Finland is where Santa lives the other 364 days a year. Visitors can see him in his natural home environment, a town on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland.

Enjoy The French Holiday Season With Enjoy Better Coffee

The end of November is a special time around the world. In France, the end of the month brings the opening of the “marchés de Noel” (Christmas markets).

Strasbourg-France-Market-ChristmasThe holiday spectacle includes all sorts of local products and wares (think lavender from Provence and soap from Marseille); Christmas trees, decorations and lights, lots of lights; short plays and musical performances; wine-tasting in the regions that produce wine (think Bordeaux and Champagne); and, the arrival of Saint Nicolas to visit with the children. This officially opens the Christmas season. In many parts of France, Saint Nicolas Day is celebrated in early December. As you may already know, that night children place their shoes (or maybe a special St. Nick boot) near the door or by the chimney before retiring to bed. In the morning, the shoes should be filled with gifts, candies, toys and other special items that Saint Nicolas has delivered while everyone slept. The French also celebrate with “le Père Noël” (Father Christmas) on December 25th. French consumers also enjoy a Buche de Noel (yule log), available in many delicious flavors (coffee, praline, chocolate, lemon, and white chocolate).

You won’t believe what these people have in common!

Dutch-American-Heritage-Clogs-Blue-300But first, let’s talk about Dutch-American Heritage Day, which is November 16, 2017. It was in 1991 when the U.S. Congress officially voted to make November 16th as Dutch-American Heritage Day. President George H.W. Bush decreed the day be a way to celebrate the 200 years of friendship between the U.S. and the Netherlands. Did you know that the Netherlands was one of the first countries to recognize the U.S. as an independent country? Events are held in cities across America: Holland, Michigan; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Seattle, Washington, among many others.

famke-janssen-cr-250This year, a gala is being held in Los Angeles on the 16th to honor Famke Janssen, a Dutch actress, director, and former fashion model. Born in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, Janssen moved to New York city to attend Columbia University. She has worked for organizations that raise animal rights awareness, set international drugs and crime policies, and most recently to raise awareness about animal poaching. Proceeds from the gala will help fund education and research for cancer and for Dutch studies at two California universities.

Coffee In The News

Coffee With Bling

Glitter-Gold-Latte-200Golden glitter lattes are the next bling thing. A café in the West Midlands, UK, debuted golden glitter lattes. The non-toxic glitter is able to be used in food and drink, and apparently leaves you with a shiny lip gloss too. A café in Mumbai, India, is doing the same thing, with their “Diamond and Gold Cappuccino.”

6 Current Coffee Trends + 1 Great Deal from Enjoy Better Coffee = Score!

For fun, this week we have gathered the scoop on 6 current coffee trends, including how you can recreate a few of them at home, should you feel so moved. Then, order coffee from us and we’ll give you $5 off your order of $30 or more.*

Here are the top 6 coffee trends for 2017, in no particular order:

1. Gourmet Coffee varieties have made a big splash for coffee drinkers. Consumer consumption increased from 18 to 24 percent in just one year. More than half of all consumers, almost 60 percent, report they drank a cup of gourmet coffee in the last 24 hours.**

~At Enjoy Better Coffee, we have only premium and specialty coffees made in Europe for the European market.

2. Sparkling Coffee Soda is cold-brew coffee with lemon and tonic water, seltzer or flavored soda. Use the typical ratio of 1:1 coffee to water, replacing the water with something bubbly. Put a scoop of ice cream on top and you have a very special float.

3. Gin and Coffee Tonic, served in a glass, is made with 10ml (2 teaspoons) of cold-brew coffee added to a shot of gin. Add tonic, garnish with lemon.

4. Vietnamese Egg Coffee consists of one espresso and 3 tablespoons of condensed (not evaporated) milk that has been whisked with an egg yolk and a drop of vanilla into a meringue-like, creamy topping. Enjoy.

5. Coffee In A Cone probably won’t be available at your local café. But imagine this: A specially-made chocolate lined waffle cone that is leak-proof for 10 minutes, and is filled with a coffee latte.

6. More people than ever are drinking coffee daily, with all age groups showing an increase from last year. Up a mere 2 percent are the 18-24 year olds, while those aged 40-59 are up 11 percent from last year.**

Try one or more of our premium ground, whole bean and instant coffees. Find a great espresso roast. Bring home an assortment of pods or capsules. Whatever your choice, you’ll get $5 off your order of $30 or more at www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com.*

Please use coupon code: FIVEOFF

*Discount valid through 11:59 PM PDT on 8/22/17 with $30 minimum order before shipping costs at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products.
**Per the National Coffee Association’s 2017 National Coffee Drinking Trends report

Interested in trying one or more of these trends? You’ll need this easy recipe for making cold-brew coffee. And maybe you will just create your own coffee trend!

How to Cold Brew:

1. Use a medium to coarse grind of coffee. Place the grounds in the bottom of a non-reactive container. Add cold water, using a 1:4 parts coffee-to-water ratio. Stir gently to combine.

2. Cover, then allow mixture to steep for 18-24 hours, either in or out of the refrigerator.

3. Strain the brewed coffee into a container to remove the grounds; it may take a few passes using paper towels, muslin or even a coffee machine filter. (If it remains cloudy, try using a larger grind next time.)

4. To make a coffee drink, try 1:1 parts coffee to water. You may have to adjust the ratio, up to 1:8 parts coffee to water, to get the flavor you like.

5. The concentrate should be stored in the refrigerator in a covered container.
