Italian Espresso: North vs South

This week, we have two of our best Italian coffees in the spotlight: Hausbrandt and Kimbo

Kimbo-Hausbrandt-Banner-Light-300pxTogether, these two brands, from opposite sides of the country, showcase true Italian coffee. Hausbrandt is from northern Italy, in Trieste, while Kimbo is based in the southern part of the country, out of Naples. In every part of Italy, people drink coffee all day, often standing up at a coffee bar, alongside a glass of water, meant to cleanse the palate pre-drink.

When we think about the origins of coffee, many great European cities were thriving centers for coffee production. In the ancient southern city of Naples, coffee has always held a special place in Italian hearts. Neapolitans have long roasted their own coffee, either at home or from a vendor cart.
naples_coffee_with_lemons-200pxOrdering an espresso in a bar (a coffee bar, that is) will usually include a twist of lemon peel alongside, a popular citrus fruit in that part of Italy. In fact, in the south, food is simple, fresh and a little spicy. Perhaps it is the warm sea breezes, sunny weather, and a later start to the day, but southern roasts are darker, full-bodied with a heavier mouth-feel.

Up north, Trieste is an historical center of the coffee industry in Europe, one of the most important for the last few centuries. It was here that coffee was delivered for processing, and encouraging small shops and cafes to open along the waterfront and neighborhoods. Here, espresso is traditionally a bit lighter, with a more delicate taste, with little acid. Sweetness and smoothness are key factors in coffee from the north.

We enjoy both these coffee brands, and we know you will too. This week, get 15% off your order of Kimbo and Hausbrandt products at http://www.EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with no minimum order required.*

Coffee Drinks In Italy

Itailian-Coffees-Chart2-NL

Here are the go-to coffee drinks in Italy. We’ve included our suggestions for roasts from our two featured Italian brands to make the perfect cup.

Un Caffe is an espresso. Hausbrandt Espresso ground is 100% Arabica beans, with a sweet flavor, medium body and floral aroma notes. Kimbo Napoletano ground is made with Arabica and Robusta coffee beans, roasted to extract an intense flavor and rich aroma.

Cappuccino is espresso topped with hot, foamy milk. Try Hausbrandt Espresso Rossa ground coffee for a sweet and aromatic cappuccino. Kimbo Antica Tradizione ground is a classic espresso; with milk, the creamy drink is smooth.

Caffe Latte in Italy is usually served with a tall glass of heated milk. Made of 1/3 espresso and 2/3 heated milk, this creamy coffee, just as with cappuccino, is only ordered by Italians before lunch. Hausbrandt Superbar whole bean coffee has a superb aroma with toast notes, while hints of cocoa and liquorice linger. Kimbo Aroma Gold ground is 100% Arabica coffee, so it has a rich aroma and flavor with a smooth finish.

Caffe Americano is espresso with additional hot water added. Hausbrandt Nero Espresso ground is sweet, with floral aroma notes. Kimbo Superior Blend in whole bean is sweet and smooth.

Macchiato, meaning “stained,” is an espresso with a teaspoon or so of foamed milk on top, and is the one coffee drink with milk that Italians will drink any time of day. Hausbrandt Oro Espresso ground coffee has a nutty flavor and an excellent deep brown crema. Kimbo Extra Cream in whole beans is considered one of the best of the southern Italian espressos.

These coffees and these drinks will immediately transport you to a sunlit Italian piazza. Try one, two or more with the discount above, which is only available through Tuesday.

Coffee In The News

Teen vs Council in Australia; Bureaucracy Wins

Fifteen year-old Dante Valentinis, a high school student living in Newcastle, South Wales, is considered by many to be a self-starter. He’s run a vegetable and fruit business from his backyard, walked dogs and bred chickens to make money. With his father’s help, he found a discarded kitchen cabinet, refurbished it into a cart, added a fridge, a water heater, sinks, a hot plate and a generator. He and 3 staff (friends and family) got matching uniforms and set up the coffee cart at a local beach on the weekends. Unfortunately, the business, known as D’oro the Exploro, was forced to close by the Newcastle City Council. While claiming to support the lad’s initiative and entrepreneurship, they stated Dante must be required to follow the same steps and processes for approval that anyone with a mobile food van has to complete. Plans for his business were developed last year with his teachers in high school. No surprise that Dante has already started the process and plans to jump through the council’s hoops.

A Traditional Italian Christmas

Christmas in Italy is one big celebration from early December into January! The holidays are filled with celebrations, parades, music, food and a deep reverence for the religious aspects of the season.

In Italy, people wish each other “Buon Natale!” Christmas decorations are put up the day following the celebration of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, December 8th. Everyone displays a version of the Nativity scene, called the “Presepe.” In fact, Naples is the home to an extremely elaborate and detailed Nativity scene with more than six hundred decorations and figures. Another symbol of the season is the Poinsettia plant, displayed and sold everywhere.

Milan-Cathedral-Christmas-Banner

la-befana-300pxA unique aspect of gift-giving in Italy is the arrival of La Befana, a kindly old witch. She rides a broomstick, dressed in patched clothing, but smiling as she delivers bags of gifts for the children by way of the chimney. Good children get candy; bad children get lumps of coal.

La Befana sweeps up after herself when she leaves too. She does this the night before Epiphany, the 12th day of Christmas, in early January. A large family meal is shared on Epiphany, which officially ends the Italian holiday season.

One Last Italian Holiday Tradition

cuccia-wheat-kernals-300pxSaint Lucy’s day on December 13th celebrates light in the darkness, with the winter solstice coming. The festival is marked with fireworks or bonfires. In Naples, fires are lit at dawn along the beachfront leading to the church. In Sicily, people eat a traditional pudding made from boiled wheat kernels.

Lavazza, Earth Day and The Earth Defenders at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com

Lavazza has long been a company that cares about sustainability in the coffee-growing areas of the world. This year, Lavazza celebrates Earth Day (April 22nd) with the release of 2 different documentaries to be shown on Italian television. Both documentaries are connected to the Lavazza annual calendars, which are photographed by famous and well-known artists.

“The Earth Defenders” was the theme of the 2015 Lavazza calendar, highlighting people who work the land in Africa. A documentary with the same name will highlight the photographer and look behind the development of the calendar. “We Are What We Live” is the 2017 Lavazza calendar theme, and the name of the second documentary to be shown, again focusing on the photographer behind the calendar and the work involved creating this annual work of art.
This has been a big year for Lavazza. In addition to these documentaries, the company has opened a new headquarters in Turin, known as the “Cloud” because of its innovative design and being LEED-certified, which means the building meets environmental performance standards. And, just this February, Lavazza announced its new gourmet, coffee-focused restaurant concept, Condividere (“sharing”). The restaurant is slated to open in late 2017 in Turin also.
