Must Have Coffee

Coffee-Add-Ins-Banner-E

Not just our first words in the morning, coffee is also a great idea for a party. Whether you have just a few guests or dozens, be sure you offer coffee to your guests. Some people (like us) love good coffee any time of the day; for others, it will be appreciated later in the evening. Offer both decaf and regular, and hot water available for instant drinks and hot cocoa.

Surround the carafes holding the liquids with different sized-cups, spoons and all the stir-ins you can find. Try simple flavors such as:

  • Small chocolate candies (kisses in many flavors; Andes)
  • Flavored syrups
  • Hot cocoa mix (add a spoonful to coffee – yum!)
  • Good instant coffee
  • Raw sugar
  • Real cream
  • Candy canes
  • Whipped cream
  • Candied orange peel
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Assorted teas
  • Flavored creamers
  • Spices: Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Lavender, Cloves (to name a few)
  • For Adults only: Kahlua, Frangelico, Chambord, Whiskey, Cognac

You can be as elaborate or as uncomplicated as you want. You may already have a lot of potential add-ins in your pantry.

Speaking of keeping things simple…

Coffee-Related Appetizers

Coffee makes a delicious BBQ sauce or rub. Serve grilled or broiled pieces of steak, chicken or pork, cut into chunks or strips, on skewers, or prepare (or buy) chicken wings, with a selection of BBQ sauces alongside for dipping. Add a coffee BBQ sauce to baked beans, shredded meat sliders, or for meatballs or sliced sausages in the crockpot.

Here’s an easy coffee BBQ sauce recipe:

Ingredients

  • Coffee-bbq-sauce1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 2 Tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1½ tsp black pepper
  • 1½ Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1½ tsp low-sodium soy sauce

Directions

  1. Combine ketchup, coffee, brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder and chili powder in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally.
  2. Remove from heat. Stir in black pepper, balsamic vinegar, and soy sauce.
  3. Store in the refrigerator. Can be made in advance.

Serving Adult Beverages?

A coffee martini is a real treat!

Espresso Martini

IngredientsCoffee-Martini-With-Shaker

  • 1.5 oz Kahlua
  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz espresso

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously and strain into a martini glass.

Here’s to a wonderful New Year’s Eve celebration!

Holiday Traditions Across the Globe

EBC-CHRISTMAS-2018-NL-E2
Over the next two days, billions of people across the globe will pause their usual work and take part in a special event wherever they are. Perhaps that event is a religious church service. Or maybe it’s a particular meal with family or friends. Or maybe it’s just taking some time on your own to read or reflect.

Just as the holidays here are filled with traditional activities, so too are the cities and towns across Europe, and beyond, as people prepare for and carry out their seasonal rituals. Because EnjoyBetterCoffee.com has the best of European coffee made for the European market, we thought you would enjoy knowing a bit about some of the traditions of the countries that produce our most popular coffees.

But first, here’s our special deal for the holiday:

We’ll take 15% off your order of $30 or more of our products on our site when you order by Wednesday, December 26!*

Please Use Coupon Code: HOLIDAY15

*Discount valid through 11:59PM ET on 12/26/18 at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com with $30 minimum order required before shipping cost. Not valid with other coupons or discounts, special sale or case sale products. Offer not redeemable for cash.

Questions? Please note that our offices will be closed from December 22nd through December 25th. We will be available at 800.582.6617 on Wednesday December 26th through Friday December 28th 9AM-5PM ET this week.

Hyvää Joulua

sauna-210pxChristmas Eve starts early in Finland (it will be dark by 3pm that day), so breakfast is a traditional rice porridge and plum fruit juice. Between morning and the early evening, traditional activities include decorating the tree, taking a sauna, and visiting the graves of family members to leave a candle-lit lantern at the site.

God Jul

Christmas Eve is also very important in Sweden. The main meal that day will be a buffet served at lunchtime. There will be lots of fish: cured, smoked and pickled, and served in many different ways. Ham is special, along with turkey, roast beef, pate, salads, breads, sausages, cabbage rolls, pigs’ feet, and many potato- and cabbage-based side dishes. Pastries and cookies are served as dessert.
Swedish-Christmas

Frohe Weihnachten

Silent-Night-crAustrians speak a dialect of German, so “Merry Christmas” is the same in Austria, Germany and, as it happens, in Switzerland. The big holiday tradition starts on Christmas Eve, when the tree is lit for the first time, and everyone sings carols around the bright tree. “Silent Night” is the most traditional carol, perhaps because it was written in Austria in the early 1800’s.

Buon Natale

7fishes-ITIn Italy, Christmas Eve finds family and friends enjoying “The Feast of the Seven Fishes” which of course includes 7 courses of fish (think eel, smelts, clams, mussels, and shrimp, to name a few).

Frohe Weihnachten

Stollen-cropThe Christmas tree itself is a big part of the holiday celebrations in Germany. You may already know that tree decorating as a Christmas tradition began in Germany, and was brought to England by Prince Albert, who married Queen Victoria of England in the 1800’s. A traditional treat for this time of year is stollen, bread with dried fruits, nuts, spices and icing.

Joyeux Noel

Yule-Log-CropIn Provence, France, the Christmas Eve meal is followed by Thirteen Desserts. It’s most important to have 13 offerings rather than have any specific treat. Across France, though, nothing beats the popularity of the Yule Log cake. Decorated with frosting, marzipan and cream meant to look just like a log, right down to the bark and mushrooms growing alongside, the cake is adorned with red and green holly to emphasize the season.

Most importantly, the one thing that all these countries have in common is simple: Coffee is served with the meal and/or dessert.

Try any of our coffees from these countries or beyond – Look under Coffee By Type, where we have grouped coffees by country.

Go ahead, treat yourself to some fresh European coffee and use the discount above. Order now!

Have a wonderful holiday week – and next week, look for some coffee-related party tips in our newsletter!

The Brands of Tchibo In The Spotlight

Germany is a pivotal player in the history of coffee, importing, selling and serving coffee as far back as the 1700’s. Coffee was popular among the upper classes and royalty in the early days, but flourished throughout all the classes by the 1800’s. Women spent time in the coffee shops, chatting with their lady friends, much to the dismay of their menfolk. In fact, the term “coffee klatch” is from a German word that translates to gossip and coffee.

Coffee-Klatsch-Banner

Black-Forest-Cake-275Today, Germans are one of the top consumers of coffee, with more than 80 percent of Germans over the age of 14 drinking coffee. Some of the tastiest German cakes are served with coffee as part of the coveted afternoon break, held especially on Sundays and holidays. Some “kuchen” (cake) favorites: Black Forest cake, cheesecake, and a specialty Honey-Almond cake.

Speaking of favorites, we have a sweet deal on 3 very special German coffees this week at EnjoyBettercoffee.com. We have Tchibo, Eduscho, and Davidoff coffees, all 15% off with no minimum order.*

Please use coupon code TCHIBO15

The Brands Of Tchibo

Tchibo, Eduscho and Davidoff are all premium roasted coffee. Check out some of our favorites from these brands:

Davidoff-Cafe-Logo-NL-BlockDavidoff Café is a luxury brand that creates smooth and flavorful coffee. One of our newest items from Davidoff Café is Crema Intense instant coffee, a special coffee. Another special instant is the Limited Edition Elements, and we have four other Davidoff instants too. Davidoff makes delicious ground coffee in both Espresso 57 and Rich Aroma. We also have 2 types of whole beans, Espresso 57 and Crème. Finally, for the Nespresso drinkers, we have three different roasts, plus a capsule variety package. All Davidoff products are available for the discount above, including items on sale.

2015_Tchibo LogoTchibo is a top seller, with several premium products. Try Tchibo Exclusive Ground coffee, great for stovetop Moka makers and espresso, also available in Instant. We have several ground coffees from the Tchibo range: Feine Milde (fine and mild), Beste Bohne (100% Arabica), Gold Selection (aromatic, unique, medium blend), Family (full and strong), and the exclusive Black and White instant (full intensity blend). Tchibo also makes two Espresso roasts in whole beans, Sicilia Style and Milano Style.

2015_Eduscho logoEduscho opened its first store in Bremen in the 1950’s, soon followed by stores in major German cities. Introduced in 1959, Gala coffee was sold in bakeries which further popularized the brand in German culture. In 1980, Gala coffee was renamed to Gala Number 1 (Nr. 1) to reflect its status in the market and its flavor and quality.

Meanwhile, in Germany…

Just last month, in Berlin, a symposium hosted by The Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC) presented the latest research on coffee consumption and type 2 diabetes. Results were presented regarding research on the association between coffee consumption and type 2 diabetes risk. One professor presented his own additional analysis after reviewing 30 separate studies, with more than 1.1 million total participants. The results suggest that drinking 3-4 cups of coffee per day is associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, in both men and women. The results showed the same reduced risk with drinkers of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee. Other potential benefits include liver support, with lower risks of depression and the onset of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Coffee-Shoes-LGCoffee is great to drink regardless of its potential health benefits, but we were interested to learn that a German engineering firm has designed and produced sneakers that are made of fifty percent recycled coffee grounds. It is the upper portion of the shoe that utilizes the coffee, while the remainder of the shoe is maybe with recycled bottles, rubber and cork. They are produced in Italy, and available in high- and low-top unisex styles. This is the second type of vegan-friendly shoe the company has made, the previous version was made of mushroom-based leather.

Choco-RoadFinally, this isn’t about coffee, but about chocolate, and worth the read. A few days ago, one ton of liquid German chocolate flowed down a road after leaking out of a storage tank in a chocolate factory. That’s right, chocolate flowed freely for nearly four miles of neighborhood street before hardening in the cold temperatures. More than 20 firefighters used hot water and blow torches to clean it up. (We’ll leave the Wonka jokes up to you!)

Happy Holidays! Or, as they say in Dutch…

de-newsletter-header-holiday-Vrolijk-Kerstfeest!-fc

Dordrecht-Christmas-Stall
In the Netherlands, the Christmas markets are open – one of the best is found in Dordrecht, a small town with a picturesque medieval section surrounding a 13th century Gothic church. The market is even more exclusive than you might think; the extravagant pop-up market lasts for only one special weekend. Just last week, Saint Nicholas sailed in from Spain, visited the homes of children, left presents in their shoes carefully set by the door, and sailed back to his home in Spain.

DE-Christmas-Decorations-300Family homes, shops and the big department stores are decorated with hanging lights, wreaths, wrapped boxes and decorated trees, and still more lights. Very popular decorations include displaying an Advent calendar and the Advent wreath, and a nativity scene. Special Dutch Christmas songs can be heard on the radio and in shops, including a perennial favorite about a boy looking for his lost rabbit, Flappie, who sadly turns out to be Christmas dinner. (The song was written by a Dutch comedian. Compare it to “Grandma got run over by a reindeer.”)

At Christmas, though, the food is a big star of the day – well, the 2 days (First Christmas and Second Christmas, the 25th and 26th, respectively). Some delicacies are only for the season: ginger nuts, egg-yolk liquor, mulled wine (Santa’s favorite drink), and chocolate or pastry letter shapes of your initials.

Dutch-foods-holiday

But the real secret to an authentic and traditional Dutch Christmas is family. The Dutch have deemed spending time with family as the most important part of Christmas, well before eating delicious food and attending church.

Here at EnjoyBetterCoffee.com, we hope all our customers enjoy the holidays, whether it’s with family, friends, neighbors, or just your four-legged family members. Celebrate the season with our special deal this week and get 15% off your order of Douwe Egberts and Senseo products.*

Dutch Cocoa: The Taste of Real Chocolate

Dutch-Cocoa-Droste-EDutch cocoa is made with a process developed by a Dutch chemist almost 200 years ago, which makes drinking hot chocolate very pleasant and tasty. It also tends to make the cocoa powder dark. Another type of Dutch-processed cocoa is black cocoa (think Oreo cookies). We have 2 brands of Dutch cocoa:

Van Houten cocoa in an 8.8oz tin

Droste cocoa in an 8.8oz box

Both are entirely cocoa powder with no additives, and both make rich hot chocolate and can be used in baking.

As a special deal this week, the discount is available on our Dutch cocoa.

The Netherlands In The News

Iconic Cookie Made Into Liquor

Stroopwafel-liquerOh no they didn’t! The stroopwafel, a caramel syrup cookie, is a Dutch snack that has been around since the 1850’s. Now a Dutch company has recreated the sweet taste with a splash of alcohol that reviews say really taste like the cookie. With an alcohol content of 14.7 percent, this drink is not for the children, but it will literally warm your heart!
