Coffee: Not Just For Drinking Anymore

Other Uses for Coffee

Periodically, we like to remind you about ways to reuse your coffee grounds. Here are a few uses you may not know:

  • Erase food smells from your hands. Sure, that cilantro tastes yummy on your enchiladas, but not so much on your hands after dinner. Rub a handful of used grounds on your hands, then rinse with warm water.
  • Clean your fireplace without the dusty mess. With cold weather soon to be upon us, fireplaces will be back in use, but we all know that cleaning them creates a bigger mess with all the dust. Try sprinkling damp coffee grounds over the cooled ashes, allow it all to sit for 15 minutes, and then scoop out the mess into an ash can. The grounds cling to the ashes, so dust is kept to a minimum.
  • Put grounds in a bowl and place it in a room or your refrigerator that has a lingering odor. You can even put some in the trash bin to keep that smell down. Put some grounds in a tulle or cheesecloth bag and place in your  car.
  • Clean that dry-erase board of permanent markers. Pack the grounds in a small piece of cloth, gather the ends with a rubber band and you have a little scrubber.  You will be surprised when that marker comes right off your dry-erase board.
  • Dispose of out-of-date prescription pills. Instead of throwing the old pills into the trash, where a child or animal could find them, crush them in a bag with used coffee grounds and toss the bag into the trash. The pills can’t be retrieved or reused by man or animal.

Tea Protects the Heart

Tea News

[Originally posted 10/13/10]

A new study from the University of Western Australia has found that drinking 3 cups of tea daily can protect against heart attacks and strokes.  The study shows regular drinking of either black or green tea can reduce the risk of heart problems by 11 percent, cut plaque build-up in arteries and deliver a good helping of antioxidants.  Researchers believe the benefits are largely due to the flavonoid content, which are the antioxidant ingredients that counteract cardiovascular disease.  One cup of tea provides 150-200 mg of flavonoids.

Coffee and Health – Still More Good News

Even more studies are finding that coffee is good for you. While many studies in recent years have reported that drinking coffee may be good for your heart and might even prevent strokes, several in the last few years found a strong link between coffee and cardiovascular health.

Research from the 1970’s through the 1980’s never found a definitive answer. Some studies found it helped; others that it hurt; still others found no connection at all. Recent years have shown a resurgence in these studies, and the results are promising.

For instance, in March, Swedish researchers announced results of a large study showing that coffee seemed to reduce the risk of stroke in women by up to 25%.

In the last 2-3 years, researchers have found a link to a decreased risk of stroke. A 2008 study in Finland of male smokers found that those who drank 8 or more cups per day lowered their risk of stoke by 23% compared to the men who drank little or no coffee.

UCLA and USC researchers announced a study of coffee consumption and stroke prevalence among more than 9,000 participants. The likelihood of stroke was highest among people who didn’t drink coffee and lowest among those who drank the most coffee.

A study published in 2009 found that the 83,000 women enrolled who drank two to four cups of coffee a day had a lower risk of stroke than women who drank less than one cup per month.

Just this year, a study out of Japan foudn that of the 81,000 mean and women in Japan that drank just one or two cups of coffee a day reduced their risk of death from cardiovascular disease by up to 23%.

Whether this is surprising to you personally or not, it is still good news for those of us who love coffee!

Coffee May Ease Pain

[Originally Posted 9/9/2012]

A new study out of Norway found that people who drank coffee before sitting down to work at a computer (and who doesn’t?) reported less pain in their necks and shoulders than those who did not drink coffee. Some participants previously suffered from chronic neck/shoulder pain while others in the study had not. Both groups reported less pain nonetheless. Participants worked for 90 minutes at a computer task using only a mouse. Yet another reason to enjoy coffee!

Coffee Bar – Clothing Store Combo

Omaha, Nebraska has its first coffee bar/clothing store named Shop-a-Latte. (Go on, say it aloud. It will make sense then.) The owner first bought the clothing store almost 2 years ago. Since then, she discovered a love for Illy coffee and decided to bring coffee to the shop. The coffee bar is at the front of the store, serving its signature drink, the Audrey Hepburn (espresso, vanilla, steamed milk, whipped cream and caramel drizzle), lattes and smoothies while the remainder of the space is filled with clothing. Text your order in advance to have a barista deliver it to your car or to your changing room!
